It is easy enough to point the finger our staff when anything goes wrong here, but the truth is, we don't just sit around and torment players for kicks. Having been on this moo for a while, and having gotten to know several of the wizzen rather well, I think that you should take a little bit more time trying to figure out the answers to your "losses" on your own, before trying to accuse the various wizzen of it. For the most part, they seem to be fair, happy, nice people who get a kick out of coding for some odd reason, and should be thanked for their efforts rather than accused every time that something goes wrong for an individual player. However, special items and items that are magical do tend to disappear if they aren't used. We can only create a certain amount of these items, and to ensure the maximum enjoyment for your coding dollar, they need to be spread around the MOO. If somebody hordes a bunch of a particular item that there may only be 5 of in the entire MOO, it severely cuts into other peoples ability to use the special things we've created. This doesn't usually apply to items that are purchased, however it's hard (if not impossible) for wiz's to tell what has been purchased and what has been found. It's something that happens, in any case. If there were more movement of items among players, wiz's wouldn't have to do it. I don't do it, but be aware that it is something that is a viable wiz activity, for the sake of the MOO. (Of course it isn't aimed at hurting players, and if you feel you're being un-fairly targeted, tell Quinn.) If you want more special items on the MOO, so we don't have to make sure circulation occurs, send ideas for things to *ideas, help out newbies so the wiz's don't have to, and generally try to be nice, since if players don't cause problems, we can spend our time making new things and new areas. I will, naturally, be blind-folded and spun about several times before firing. In the case of several people ending up within the flowerly blast radius, Moonheart and Cordelia will act as judges, deciding which person received the brunt, er majority of the flowers and who will then, obviously, be the next person to marry upon leaving the hospital of er choice. Before that, a little disclaimer. If you are not interested in Role Playing as opposed to Hack and slash then you need read no farther. If you are still reading either you are curious or you are interested in Rp. When you enter a room on Ghost that rooms description gives you an idea of how big it is and what is in it. One can be safe to assume that when you enter a room (especially outdoors!) that you are not standing within arms reach of the occupants! So stepping into a room and swinging your sword/axe/crowbar of doom at someone whatever, is not really very realistic. How to solve this sticky widget? It is standard practice on RP intensive sites that the rooms occupants announce their position to anyone entering the room. Unless it is obvious where they are located in the rooms description. By stating their location in the room the occupants give the new arrival(s) an idea of where everyone is and what they may be doing. This allows for more Rp possibilities then just entering and hacking and slashing. The same distance rule could apply to ranged weapons. Using a shotgun or other ranged weapon against a broadsword is not an easy task. One could use it as a bludgeon. The most realistic thing to do would be to switch or use it like a club! Of course, none of this is coded. It would be a major drain on the DB to even try and keep track of all the different variables. The ideas above should be used on a consent basis. If you are following the above guidelines and no one else is, you may want to go with the majority. If enough people use this idea it may become standard practice. And it killed them in one shot. And yes, I also know about the incidents of those not as powerful who have died in a single shot. Perhaps this will clear up some of the outrage and or confusion. There is a chance that any attack could bring about instant death. The weaker the creature and the weapon the lower the chance of couse, but THERE IS THAT CHANCE. A word of advice for those who may think the Chim is unfair or too powerful. Most of the rooms on Ghostwheel allow one to look into the next room. (ex. Look s) This is a very good idea as it is quite handy to know what you are walking into. Secondly, smart combat. Know when to heal and know when to flee. It was pretty standard practice for me, when I was a player here to type two commands before entering a new area. First, I queued the command to go to the exit, then I queued the command to leave the very same exit! So I was in and out before anything could respond, but I still got the layout of the room. There is an element of risk to anything you do. The Chim is just one more element added into the mix. -Kyn (Critter Wrangler) -------------------------- Message 260 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Sat Jul 20 20:50:37 1996 CDT From: Mulder (#709) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: RP Meeting Log The log of the RP Meeting saturday night at 7 is available on the web at: http://sparczilla.itouch.net/rplog.txt The next meeting will be next saturday, same MOO-time, same MOO-station! -Mulder -------------------------- Message 261 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Wed Jul 24 15:18:42 1996 CDT From: Quinn (#2) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: fist message set Created #13464 as a message set for the defauly natural weapon of fists (#346). That's been fixed. All will now be queued. The PC-KILLER-REACTOR has been modified. It will now queue TEN attacks upon a person entering the room. Furthermore, whenever someone talks, emotes, heals, or attacks in the room, it will queue from 1-5 attacks against that person *if and only if* :will_attack returns true on them. No more will beasties sit around listening to you insult them. The chief impetus for this change was watching a waste titan stare blankly then wander off as I wiped my brow in relief at not being shish-ka-bobbed by his claws from his ONE attack. Bleah. The Ranks are as follows (This is all known or rumored in the IC world) Dreadlords- There are only three of them so far, Apocalypse, Krystul, and Zillah. Chosen- Long loyal and trusted members of EIC. They are just below the Dreadlords in power and evil. Children of the Dark (or simply, Children)- They are the basic forces of EIC. They have little power in the ranks, but are at least trusted. Grunts- Not official members of EIC. They are initiates trying to prove they are willing to serve EIC. There is a final rank that is only rumored and the details are sketchy...no one knows for sure, except perhaps the Dreadlords. Please don't take the decision to join EIC lightly. There is now a stat penalty involved for those that try to leave. When you join, you go through an initiation ceremony that taints you. If you join and decide to leave, you will lose Willpower. (Or slowing of stat boosting, or whatever it is.) Well, my argument is going to take a bit of a turn here...in my opinion, slowing stats boosting is not solving the problem. That's like saying treating the symptoms is curing the disease. It doesn't work. What needs to happen is a major overhaul in player attitudes towards stats. We need to all come to an understanding that combat shouldn't be the main focus of a tinyplot. Now, in some instances, stats do make the character. Someone playing a recomb assassin or a crystal hunter bodyguard would have combat stats of a fairly good degree, but others, such as a noble born woman or a younger child wouldn't have those stats. But, because everyone here is so combat oriented, a character without high stats doesn't stand a chance. The moment anyone gets aggressive, so and so with their mighty blade smites the wicked one without two words being spoken. What I'd love to see is a bit of combat without actually typing 'kill '. Not everyone here does that, I'm not generalizing it to the entire MOO, but it is a problem. As one who tries to create and initiate plots on the MOO using various characters, I have run into Red Fang's problems time and time again. No one has the patience to see a plot run it's course. They want to save the day and they want to do it NOW. I hope Red Fang will be able to take a well deserved break and return to us again when he's had time to relax. As for everyone else. Stop before wielding that sword, shotgun, bow, whatever. Think about maybe just not resorting to combat and resolving the plot using your characters brains instead of your character's 689 in bladed to save the day. Might find it much more satisfying. But, that tense moment to see hwo my oppenent rolls, well, I love it, very exciting stuff waiting to see if you get hit or not. I think we have little randomenss to our combat here. A few examples. I would bet, slayer could dodge ten players each with 200 bladed....all at the same time. Now, sure, slayer is good, but 10 swords swinging at him? Also, for that matter, could the 10 all hit him? I dont spar or hunt often, I'm not complaining about my skills, I know they are shabby and accept it. I just think perhaps there should be a bit more chance involved, Even the best swordsman makes a mistake now and then. And who knows, at the right time that mistake could be fatal. I dont know what to say about coding things for this, who knows, I just am saying that this mushes combat system is a bit set in its ways. Just like the dodging, I've been known to fight 13 cainids, and none of them hit, I'd sure love to see that, Yalon dancing around leaping from cainid to cainid. Well, just more thoughts from the madman, take care all :) -------------------------- Message 303 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Tue Aug 13 07:04:05 1996 CDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: Red Fang and the Federation Ok, did alot of thinking So many seem paniced by the Federation so I thought I'd help you out. Its completely RP, and will run many tps through it.. Was intended to get lowlanders a base of operation and a central starting point for tps.. You all complained that all the Tps were on Morlith.. Well.. Perhaps that is where they belong since 90% of the lowlanders excluding the Subbies are just wandering aimlessly. Red Fang is a player, just like most of you.. he's not a wiz, his stats haven't been set and he's taken long long hours to boost back to be close to what he was before. He can be controled Ideas for Federation plots.. First get involved.. Help Valentine and get a system that is workable icly. Get a alt on as a guard of if your good enough be a Marshall or help me think of other positions. IF you so strongly oppose the Federation and Red Fang, plot something out.. I don't do PKing and I don't like it.. But if you work with me I'll even let you assassinate me. Use your imagination. I have tried really hard to RP Red, only using knockout on people.. Mostly Cheetah since he sets himself up to be such a pleasent target. Cheetah might be a pain, but least he trys I know the EIC has people in the Federation, Subbies, Dragon Riders.. They do most the playing.. There has never been just a place for Crystal Hunters.. That is what the Federation is for.. So its ran by a tyrannt. Figure out how to work around him.. he's not one 24 hours a day and when he is on He can't monitor everyone. But killing TP's before they even get started, and claiming that you won't work with the Federation is bull.. Unless you want to split the moo into your half my half and we never acknowledge the excistance of each other.. Your going to have to enteract.. Posting a sign on a door isn't a final act, it is only the start.. There are lots of ways you can handle it.. If you chose the hack and slash way, I'll hack and slash you. Soon, I will be reducing all stats, probably relative to the character's age. I know many of you will be pissed by this, but stats have gotten out of hand. Huge stats make the MOO a stat contest, and force us as GMs to build opponents for those outrageous stats. My working algorhythm for stat reduction is bringing all skills down by a percentage equal to your age relative to my own (which is roughly the age of the MOO). Boosting still works, it's just slowed to a default of one boost per hour per skill. Once the mega-skills are lowered, everyone will be on a more even ground. One could use macros, but they'd have to run them for an entire day non-stop to get 20 points. I'm open to suggestions that all characters be completely re-rolled, so everyone really *is* even again. Wanna blame someone? Blame the people running macros in the Ghostwheel. No, it wasn't "illegal" to do it, but it blew everything out of proportion. The idea to bring stats down again is a good one and a sound one, in my opinion. Working it on percentages based on age is also fair to those who have been on longer and have worked harder longer to obtain their skills. (Well, those without Macros anyway.) But, I also had a thought...maybe this belongs in *ideas, but I'm already posting here, so I guess I'll just leave it here. I don't know if this could be done, it'd probably be considered a pain in the ass to worry about, but why not base stats on what the character's concept is. That would be the ideal way to do things. Again, I realize this is probably not going to be easy to do and probably won't be done, but it'd still be ideal and I had to at least mention it. And for anyone wondering what I mean, I'm talking about setting a character's stats to fit the concept s/he has chosen. Someone playing a blacksmith might have a 50 to 100 in blunt, but no bladed while someone playing a swordmaster might have 100 in bladed but no blunt. (These are examples, don't take them as law, folks.) So, that's all I have to say really. What I'd really like to see is people getting away from worrying about stats in the first place, but you know, that's probably never going to happen. Ok, no one seems to like the age thing, and I can agree, I have an alt that is 700 days old and more. But, I purposely left his stats low, even @reroll! a few times. I think a total mush @reroll! will even things out. Here is why. For those of you who actually have the online time to boost, you can. If you spend hours and hours here, then you will get a proportinate amount of boosts. For those of us with very old chars, but hardly play them, we will suffer just the same as anyone else. But, this will bring the combat back to a level of training. Now, as for the major drawback. Lets say my character is online 4 hours a day. Does that mean he sleeps 20 hours? What does he do during these 20 hours? And why cant he be sparring, why should I spend all my time sparring to catch up, instead of having fun RPing. There is your major drawback. RP, vs, Sparring As for basing stats on backgrounds, perhaps we should. Let us suppose that you want your character to be a ultimate swordsman, never learning anything else. So, why not use those nifty character advantage pts to boost skills then. Say spend so many points for an automatic skill boost, and the rest you learn via Sparring. This does help those who want to RP a bit, because they can have stats and hardly ever spar. IT also gives a benifit to us older players, CAuse we can spend away points to boost. STILL, a newer, but determined player, could catch up to us. Just some thoughts on the stuff already spoke, and as for posting to ideas, hmmm, maybe I should have. I'm simply frustrated by inflation that was brought on by my own flawed algorhythms. One might notice that the stat display in the PEC was recently changed to accommodate four digits. It was at three digits because a rank above one thousand was considered practically impossible when I was building the system. Things have been thrown way off balance. The solution is two-fold. The first priority is slowing improvement. This has been done. I'm leaning towards "one boost per stat per hour" as the primary macro deterrent. Old hoops remain in place, making improvement compoundly more difficult than it should be. That'll be adjusted. (Alternate solutions to the "macro" problem: (a) death by insanity, (b) discarding insanity penalties for stat improvement purposes, (c) random interactive prompts which would require those sparring to be watching the screen and paying attention. One-per-hour seems best.) The second half of the solution involves bringing down existing stats that are grossly out of range. @newstats will show the results of my latest proposal. An explanation follows. The average stat is found, and adjustments are made to everyone's stats relative to that average. Only those stats shown in @newstats will be modified. Everything else remains the same. Ranks less than or equal to the average are not modified. Higher ranks are adjusted to midway between that higher rank and the average, with a maximum of twice the average. It seems more than reasonable, from my perspective. Attributes are actually a bit high. More tweaking can be done. Averages are obtained by masking certain high and low values, accounting for learn difficulty. -------------------------- Message 325 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Wed Aug 14 10:22:39 1996 CDT From: Khyber (#12460) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: stats Here's and idea lets leave all the stats like they are! I spend ALOT of time RPing things, and although I DO hunt, and spar occasionally (But I find myself doing such less and less).. And I am having points taken away, to meet the lower standards my fellow newbies set. I admit, none of the changes are major, but still... About the new combat system/boost rules This does need a little changing, macros _can_ cause problems here, as well as over-sparring.. So I suggest the following: First off, some way to stop those who spar constantly, but not a system that would make starting off impossible for newbies, nor one that would have no more protection than the current. Perhaps raising the limit of 5 points/hour to 3, or 5.. A minor change, but when your new and a mini-raptor is ripping you to shreds, 5 points of dodge or 10 more bladed can make a difference. And, perhaps, some incentive (sp?) for those who ARE involved in TPs.. I'm not quite shure how this would be done, perhaps those that included use of spefific stat/skills would warrant a boost therein.. Wizards might look over those TPs that were well thought out, and ended up running rather well, and reward the main persons involved... This, as I said, is only an idea.. I can see as many problems with it as most of you probably do, and know it would create loads of work for the wizards.... That's why there's a (probably misnamed) "latency_median" defined on each $skill object. Before the hourly rate is checked, the character's skill is compared against the latency median ("LM") plus a random 1-LM. The default LM is 25, therefore most skills will allow anywhere from 25-50 "un-paced" boosts. In short: Newbies can spar. (2) Regarding the "Unarmed" skill: I'm glad it was brought up. Because unarmed has no child skills, its bonus is the effective bonus for anyone using bodily weapons. I may raise the unarmed average to the average of the armed and bladed averages. (To 155, max 310.) Or maybe not. I should probably just add child skills ("brawl", "butt", and "flay") and let you develop them individually. (3) Currently, only one point is distributed when you improve. I plan to raise this to 2-3, so parent skills (like "Melee") can improve. (4) Deaths will be reset when stats are leveled. Player-kills will not. If you want to reset PK, you'll have to do a complete `@reroll!`. -------------------------- Message 351 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Wed Aug 14 16:29:30 1996 CDT From: Yseult (#4778) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: Dragonriders. I will lose at least one point (more often 3-5) in each of my *stats* as well as a good 400-something in one or two skills. I'm not upset about the stat loss...know why? 1. Upper eschelon folks like Moonheart, Balth, Red Fang and others *did* at one time spend way too much time sparring. But then it passed. They had good stats, and found there wasn't much left of a challenge on the MOO. It *forced* them to RP. They shared their sparring rounds with all who asked, they rp'd in various plots as the superhero-types they are, thus earning a reputation on this moo. 2. Since those reps are established, then lowering stats (which I hope is done) will do a couple of things: a. It just could possibly restore the unity and awe that the moo has lacked for a while. There were times when Commander Guru would take anyone who wished to go down into the uncharted Slisssh nest... None of us were invincible, but we were all seeking to become legends in our own right. b. It will also force more RP. Perhaps Moonheart won't be invincible anymore, it will force more situational RP, where even legends begin to ICly doubt their abilities. c. Overall, it will bring things back around to where our characters can *grow* again. To everyone who is still here after maxing out the system, kudos go to you, because without growth (which is what some have done for a while now), stagnation sets in. Some have turned to spiritual growth ICly, because they feel they've reached their potential physically. If stats are capped, turned down; whatnot, then each of our characters *as a whole* will be able to grow again. And that, my friends, is what RP is made of. Make it unbelievably longer to get anywhere chanting "its more realistic" and "we can rp in the helicopter".. Uhhhhh.. We can rp anywhere and realism isnt always a good thing.. Many, including myself, come here largely to escape reality, now we're gonna make it so real here that it takes forever to get simple things done. Still, so much effort went into it and so many people claimed to support the idea (though they just finished paging me how much they didnt like the change), that I have had to accept this. (Please dont misunderstand, I greatly appreciate Mulder and all the other wonderful wizards we have here that have contributed so much to GW. You all do a terrific job and I appreciate it. Please just dont "realism" a lot of good people off of this moo). Then the big thing about boosting.. Well, lets see.. I had already spent COUNTLESS ENTIRE nights sparring my character with no boost whatsoever.. Gee, lets make it even more harder.. what a great idea! Let's make sure that boosting is so freaking hard, that no one will try to do it.. Maybe they'll lose interest and leave the moo. We only want rp here, all the while claiming how the moo is for everyone (which I used to sincerely believe). Well, that's a silly thing to leave over, there are too many wonderful people here, guess I'll just have to accept that one too. Yet another brilliant idea.. A (VERY) few people cheat (and yes, I do call it cheating) and use macros to boost their characters quickly. Solution, screw up everyone's stats (destroy a nation because there's 2 or 3 criminals in it). Ignoring the fact that so many of us are already being put at a disadvantage by sparring fairly whilst a few run a program and sleep, we are now going to be further punished by losing the stats we worked so diligently for. NO ONE has worked harder for their stats than I, possibly as hard in some cases I do not know of, but not harder. So am I being punished for spending too much of my time sparring? for playing fairly while others use unfair means? Many of you know me. I have NEVER abused any stat I EARNED, I strive regularly to roleplay with anyone, to build interesting tinyplots that involve many, to help those who need assistance and to add to the wonderful atmosphere that Ghostwheel has had.. The same atmosphere that has been so often referred to as being "for everyone", but obviously is now only for those that exculsively roleplay. How many times do I have to hear "if you want to fight, go to a MUD" without ever hearing "if you want only to rp, go to such and such place"? If this really is a moo for everyone, then quit forcing out everyone that doesnt do exactly what you do. I've tried to 'settle down' before posting.. and I think I did rather well, but my sincere apologies to anyone whom i may have unnecessarily jumped on. I love it on Ghostwheel.. Since creating my character here, I have not even bothered playing on other moos, I have proudly called this place home and you all my friends and hope to continue to. I got 1 boost I think, there is no message telling you your focus goes up. I was just wondering if this 1 boost per hour thing is on the focus so I can know not to try anymore.. that would be hard.. Focus can't be boosted with macros only lots and lots of crystals and practice. In the past I've only ever boosted my focus maybe 2 or three times in under a hour, it usually cost anywhere from 1000 to 5000 crystals for a 2 or 3 point boost. So was just wondering if the focus should be excempt from the hour thing just cause of its cost. Because in a just a few minutes I will spend all the crystals I could collect in a day, so it wouldn't be a boost a hour, it would be close to a boost every couple of days seeing I don't hunt that much with Frap. They will (hopefully) increase the Rp potential along with add some fun to the combat mayhem. People who do not follow these rules will be @ejected from the plot area. I will give you a couple mistakes and I am trying to make things so that accidents won't damage anything. The guidelines are as follows: Rule 1: Virtual distance is in affect! That means that the rooms desc will be a good idea of how big the area is. Do not assume you are standing within arms/swords/claws/axe/chainsaws reach of the other occupants. Rule 2: If you're wielding a ranged weapon (shotgun/bow/whatever) and you're engaged in hand to hand combat YOU CAN NO LONGER SHOOT YOUR OPPONENT OR ANYONE ELSE! Use your weapon as a club. (Yes, I know you could shoot someone close with a shotgun. But since we cannot factor the melee combat on aiming we will do away with that possibility.) Also, thrown weapons if you miss aren't able to be picked up right away most likely. Pose going for it. Do not just pick them up right away and throw again. Rule 3: Nothing happens (no IC activities) until I set up each scene. Combat will be initated with a pose first (be it a charge or whatever). Rule 4: Any items/crystals will be spread out fairly between all parties at the end of the adventure. (Those who die will get some compensation as well) Rule 5: You may die. OOC comments should be kept to a minimum. Disruptive players will be @ejected. Hopefully those conditions will help to balance the tricky task of RP with combat. Thanks. Uncoded Skills aren't minor superpowers. That means we don't have the kind of emotion-sensing psychic Empathy here. Nor are they social interaction abilities. We don't have (World of Darkness/Vampire the Masquerade) Empathy that lets you figure someone's emotional state out from somatic cues such as facial expression either. The first kind doesn't exist because it's ESP, and the only SF concept that GhostMOO definitely doesn't have is "psionics". You can make a case that the second kind exists in the real world. That's fine but it's beyond the scope of this game, for precisely the same reasons that skills like `Seduction' and `Oratory' aren't included. Alright, if you *have* something like this on your character, I'll go so far as to grant that you *had* it, but it has to go. You've got seven days from Aug. 18, 1996 to remove it from your character. You can RP the effects of it fading if you wish. But as of the 25th, it should be removed from your character sheet. Please! It isn't appropriate to use Uncoded Skills as a means to shoehorn superpowers into your character. We now have a list of official uncoded skills. I've had a high level of Empathy practically since the first day I edited Taddy's .plan and .sheet. Empathy is and has been considered a psychic ability in many rp games, but it does not always have to be so. If you don't want psychic abilities, that is fine. However, Empathy also allows you to pick up an idea of what someone's emotional state is based on body language, voice volume, etc. I do that all the time irl. In fact, I'm pretty damn good at it and you can't tell me it wouldn't exist in this world too. I have never used her ability as a superpower and I am insulted by the insinuation that I have. No one has ever complained about it and in fact it has been a great RP aid. I fail to see why this is suddenly a bad thing. Why fix something that is not broken? And also, why fix it now. My feeling about this are biased, I'll start with that, I had hoped for Devon to get empathy, it has many possible talents, and thankfully not everyone is running around with it. First up Empathy is the only way to detect certain evils plaguing us in the RPG, Embryon for example. As well many times it helps to help a character what the feelings of those around them. Now the super power form of empathy is directed emotions into another person, I have never seen anyone use it this way, perhaps only a person with a level 3 empathy might be able to do this, and a Wiz would realize this and limit who has it, like imagine Darkhawk with empathy, he'd cause everyone to run in fear Empathy shouldn't have to be removed, it's a great plot tool, and I do believe a players consent must be given before its use? if you don't like it, then don't partipate. First the uncoded skills, as I was told many times, are those things which our characters have knowledge of or are IC 'skills' our characters are capable of performing, or are natural abilities that the character has worked on IC to improve. Yjezra has had empathy on her .sheet since she had the points past the initial 50 to become a DR. She has played this skill infrequently, always paging the participant before hand and asking if they wish to Rp it. The other PC has the choice to allow her to 'feel' or 'know' something about them. This does not mean everything, just something that might pertain to the situation. The other player makes this choice. If they wish to 'hide' or 'mask' something, they have told her and it was worked out via page before hand. No player has ever refused to Rp this. Second, you cannot automatically sense 'Evil' in another PC. What if someone has a bad day, is angry, frustrated, upset..wants to kill their boss. Does this necessarily make them Evil? Yj has asked if there is 'Harmful' intent and even then it might not be picked up. Is all up to the Rping players. If they wish to mask or hide something, then it is their choice, just as I and others were told in the past. Rule of Consent. If it does not take advantage, harm or alter anothers conception of their character, then why remove it. -------------------------- Message 406 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Mon Aug 19 17:54:58 1996 CDT From: Razorhawk (#80) To: *RPG (#1193) I've had complaints from players who misinterpreted the word `Empathy' to mean specifically a psionic talent. As there's no way I can change a strong connotation, I must tell players not to use the word `Empathy'. Quinn suggeted `world-wise'; Mantle suggested `read body language'. The biggest difficulty with it is how to interpret high levels of such an ability. Having it on your character sheet -does- impose on other players: it makes them feel obligated to negotiate with you in page. -Some- amount of this is good, yes. But I'm seeing the ability as being inordinately popular, mostly because of the misunderstanding that it's not a "power". We don't have Seduction Lvl. 3 because it implies a kind of RP negotiation we don't want players to feel obligated to deal with. The same goes for a nebulous "sensitivity/social perceptiveness" skill. This isn't coming out of the blue; the Game rules do clearly describe Uncoded Skills as being limited to certain -types- of skills, and, CURRENTLY, "social interaction" type skills aren't in the scope of the game. So... no, players can't just put any old thing they want, we do have rules. For the sake of mutual play, I'd advise players not to play "Civil Disobedience" games; it's only confusing other players and insulting the intelligence of all. -------------------------- Message 407 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Mon Aug 19 19:35:19 1996 CDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: Federation MEETING! So, let's just say if you are *right* with some reliable degree of frequency in your speculations, that would already be KNOWN about your character. You'd be considered empathetic. And no mater how high a level you set on Empathy as an uncoded skill -- if you were WRONG more often than right, it'd be like a joke:) I think beautiful/handsome is another useless 'skill/trait', too. I might look at you and find you repulsive.. who's to say? :) Imposing such things on other people's RP reallly isn't fair -- because they have a right to subjectively decide for themselves how empathetic or beautiful/handsome your character is. And they *will* decide for themselves, no matter what you've written on your .sheet. --Darby -------------------------- Message 409 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Tue Aug 20 05:15:14 1996 CDT From: Morrigan (#10469) To: *RPG (#1193) Well...everyone's adding their coinage to this debate...guess I'll toss in my two crow feathers for it also. Empathy, to me, can be defined as reading body language, to determine a emotional state, or alternatively, and more likely the one used here, as being receptive to the other person's emotions in a way that is similiar to feeling the wind or rain or sun or dirt. It's not like telepathy, where you hear a voice in your head, it's having the receptivity to feel that love is like a warm, familiar blanket, terror is like icewater, anger like a searing hot poker, jealousy like stomach-induced nausea, and so forth. Thing is, those for one empath, might not be the same for the other. Subjectivity for each empath, determines what they associate with each emotion. Further, to me as well, 'teaching' Empathy, is a valid prospect, for this reason: A Master Empath has learned how to be receptive enough, and to master their feelings, so that they can intellectually project their feelings more than adequate skill, since they _are_ a Master Empath. A lower Empath would receive the emotion from the Master Empath, and use his/her abilities to interpret what they were feeling, building up a subjective reference for it, for recall and use later on...the icewater, hot poker bit again. This would continue until the learning Empath reached a point where a certain level of emotional states were readily discernible. From there, the Master Empath after a point would continue, by mixing emotions, such as anger and jealousy, to have the Empath interpolate the new mix, sorting it out themselves. And so we come to the final prospect...using it in RP. It seems to be the great misconception here, that people 'force' this on other players without validation or recognition of the Consent Rule in the game notes. This is, quite honestly the furtherest possible thing from the truth that exists. In all cases, before Empathy is employed, it is discussed in pages by the players involved, with the player who doesn't have the Empathic skill, _consenting_ to be a part of the RP that involves Empathy. As a example, ask Naxos, the Submariner Warden, about a scene involving him and The Morrigan on Mount Morlith. Before I ever emoted or used the Empathic talent, I paged him (OOCly of course) and asked for consent to use it in that spat of RP. He did consent, and The Morrigan followed it through ICly. Ergo, the result is that rather than being 'forced' into RP, it's asked OOCly before hand, if using it will be 'permissible', during the RP, then employed as planned by the two players OOCly, beforehand in pages. Sort of like planning a TP within a TP, if you will. As a result, given these things, which I must reiterate, are my OWN opinions, based off what I have seen here in RP and etc before, then I can't see Empathy as a problem, since in greatest truth, it's a carefully planned and carefully used skill. ->The Morrigan, Magister. -------------------------- Message 410 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Tue Aug 20 05:26:40 1996 CDT From: Tadewi (#3791) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: Forced RP? No one's saying that players have 'used' this uncoded skill improperly. >From a practical point of view most of our characters possess some degree of empathy. Just 'cause it's not spelled out in your skills doesn't mean you cannot RP an intuitive, empathetic individual. And, once again, if that is part of the role you've created people will KNOW you as being empathetic -- it is just that putting it as a non-coded skill on your .sheet pretty much coerces the player *reading* your .sheet to 'pretend' you have this skill. The *proof* of having the skill is in your ability to RP it well and to actually deduce/guess another's feelings. If you are good at this, you're already empathetic:) Can people be taught this skill? I dunno.. is kinda farfetched to me. If you live with an empathetic care giver from childhood, perhaps you pick it up. Adults could surely try to cultivate it.. but that's part of emotional/spiritual growoth -- not like taking a conversational Spanish course with Berlitz. -------------------------- Message 415 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Tue Aug 20 16:35:53 1996 CDT From: Quinn (#2) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: empathy As I envision MUD RPG, the only attributes which should be coded are those which interact with traditional physics. I've avoided "Intelligence" and "Empathy" attributes for this reason. ("Willpower" does exist. One could argue it is to "magic" as Empathy is to "psionics". Maybe it's merely a reflection of my natural cold sociopathy that Willpower won out.) The Empathy in question, however, is not a coded skill. Regardless, the reasoning above applies to any character attribute which implies coercion of ones environment. What needs to be made clear is: "What does Empathy mean to you?" If it is merely "people-reading skill", then indeed it is a skill--harmless and proper when listed amongst our other uncoded skills. I am willing to allow Empathy, in the spirit of Razorhawk's "exception rule". Stipulations are as follows... (1) The skill will cost the same, but cannot be used to affect combat or natural physics. It can be used only as a RP device. THIS SHOULD BE KEPT IN MIND FOR ALL UNCODED SKILLS. (2) Gamemasters and plot-runners are advised to take Willpower into account if a player chooses to resist or sway an empathic reading. (3) It is basically a study of human perception as contemporarily manifested in con-men, holistic healers, psychologists, priests, etcetera. One with Empathy skill cannot assume an automatic knowledge of the subject's emotional state, only am "impression." Does allowing Empathy open the door to other psuedo-psionic abilities such as telekinesis? This will not be allowed to happen at this time. As far as I'm concerned, magic and psionics are two words explaining the same phenomena, two tools building the same craft. Our chosen tool here is "magic"; psionics would be redundant. Argh. Enough of that. I'll say more on uncoded skills in the next post. -------------------------- Message 416 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Tue Aug 20 17:21:31 1996 CDT From: Quinn (#2) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: advantages I can't think straight this afternoon. Let me just say that... Languages, survivalist/naturalist skills, and pure science skills (biology, zoology, anthropology, genetics, mythology) are great. Basic social interaction skills are bad. If you want to persuade or seduce people, then role-play it. If you want to list it in your sheet, that's understandable. List it with a cost of '[RP]'. Appearance, Beautiful/Hideous? This can be reflected in your description. If you must list it, use the [RP] cost as above. Diplomatic, bureaucratic, and "streetwise" skills are OK. They require knowledge of the RP universe. Warcraft--demolitions, gunsmithing, armouring, armchair strategy. These are fine. Martial arts (karate, ninjitsu) are fine as long as one realizes they have no bearing on combat and will not exportable to the corresponding coded skills if implemented. Animal husbandry is great. (Heh. I just wanted to say "animal husbandry".) Basically, the only "bad" uncoded attributes immediately obvious are those such as "seduction" and "persuasion". I've always hated social skills. Play in one of my RL games sometime and try to tell me after the guard drills you with his autoshotgun, "HEY I have a 'convince' skill of 80! He should have believed I was Jesus!" A basic rule is: If an uncoded skill impinges on the right of others to role-play their characters as they envision them, then it's bad. -------------------------- Message 417 from *RPG (#1193): Date: Tue Aug 20 19:13:01 1996 CDT From: Quinn (#2) To: *RPG (#1193) Subject: The Leveling OK, everyone check @newstats one last time. I'll probably add a command tonight to show which stats were changed. Starting potential increased to 100, in response to new higher costs and unlimited boosting in the PEC (`@go PEC`). If you want to raise attributes (physical ratings such as Strength and Agility), use the custom arguments to @reroll, not potential. It's more effective. When you increase a skill through use, more points are now distributed. This means that formerly static grandparent skills such as "Melee" will begin to improve. Increases through use are "paced" (ie: "X boosts per hour") only if your skill is above average or above a set minimum. I'll try to add a `skill` command akin to `help` and `game` which shows coded skill info. Added "Brawl" in addition to "Claw", "Bite", and "Flail" as kids of the Unarmed Combat skill. Only Brawl and Claw have been installed so far; the natural weapons are horribly redundant as is. Since not everyone was at the Spectre plot. Here is an updated and expanded list of suggestions: ***Only reccomended for player(s) vs. player(s)*** **Also this is a consent dependent list. If you don't like them, don't use them.** Rounds - A round is a series of actions by everyone involved in the scene. Once everyone has done their action you can goto the next round if needed. Actions - What you can do during a 'round'. Actions consist of anything your player does! Order of play (or who gets to go first) You can do this a couple different ways. Which way I will leave up to those involved in the scene. The first way is by alphabetical order (self explanatory). The seocnd way (which I think is better) involves comparing your quickness attributes. Right now this will have to go on somewhat of an honor system. If there is enough demand for this style, I assume we can get it coded up. Whoever has the highest quickness gets to act first. How many actions do you get a round? You get 1 action for every 100 in your quickness attribute. 0-100 1 action 101-200 2 actions 201-300 3 actions... What costs my as an action? Moving (posed only), talking, and dodging an attack cost you nothing. You can do them as much as you wish during any given round. Things that cost an action: Attacking/Wielding/Sheathing/Shooting/Reloading/Healing/Casting/Using a comm or bioscanner/leaving a room/mounting. A good rule of thumb for action that costs a point. If it is queued it is an action. If it involves a good amount of activity (using a comm/bioscanner) consider it an action. Any disputes over stats can be solved by involving a wiz. In the absence of Guru, the Federation stuff is going slow.. So we'll have another Red Fang goes crazy plot.. *grins* Here is a summary that leads us up to now. A spell uncontroled by the mage Moonheart wakes dark memorys in Red Fang. A vision of family by Red's wolf mother.. Also he see's the death of his real parents so he feels lost as to the meaning of family. Feelings of the loss drive him to reclaim things he never had.. To be Alpha. He see's The Morrigan in the position (real or not) power wealth and friends.. Even Red's own friends flock to The Morrigan as of late.. The SwordMage, Cristal and others. Over whelmed he is consumed with the jealously.. If he can defeat the Morrigan, he'll be Alpha is what he sees. He goes to kill The Morrigan, but odds are poor and a challange is made instead. Red Fang plot to find the enemy of The Morrigan and seek help. Pulling the Morrigan towards the infamous Embryon. With the Morrigan's mage blade athame, Red intends on giving it over to Embryon, the challange is simple.. The Morrigan simply has to get the blade back from Embryon and survive. So, you ask where are we at? Is the Federation alive and well? We are in a hurry up and wait phase, I'm not sure when Embryon will be on or what his reaction will be.. He might turn the whole thing down in which case I'll wing it. The power of the Federation as writen at present goes to Tempest, she's incharge until Red gets this out of his head. Red might go around claiming to still be in command, but he's not. OK, the women problems I'm creating.... Tempest is my rl girlfriend, that won't change. I love her very much. For this though, right now Red Fang is living out on his own. Red will eventualy get his head streight and go back.. I'm hopeing she'll let me :) I think thats it for now, this is all OOC info, some is known.. If you have questions page me and I'll try and answer you.. This TP is to get a certain wiz a plot to think in.. It is a gift to him. This tip (and any others that might follow) is really just a suggestion I'd like to make to all the people out there who'd like to improve the quality of roleplaying here. Tip #1: Make it a point to pose what you're currently doing for someone who just entered a room if possible. There are several reason for this. One is that it gives the person who entered a good idea of what the situation is in the room and prepares the player to react to the situation accordingly. Another reason is that it also lets the other players in the room know where you are in the room and what you've been doing there. On the other side of the coin, if you just walk into a room and there are people in there, you saying "Hi! What's up!" while IC really wouldn't be in character, especially if you walk into a room where the scene has a player waving a shotgun around threateningly around the room or better yet, if someone was out on the plains in the middle of fighting their way out of a pack of 10 cainids. Well, there you have it, Yz's RP Tip #1. Enjoy and clear skies. Were we able to log in and play a dragon as a $player, we would. That's the whole point of the insistence behind them being sentient. They are to be played as second characters with personalities of their own. Past that, people can hem and haw and wonder how a dragon would keep someone off their back? That's fairly easy, since a dragon has these two BIG wings ya know? Dragons can buffet, and you betcha, even a wing blast of air hitting youy while you're trying to climb the proverbial greasy pole, isn't gonna work. You're apt to land on your brainpan doing that. Further, dragons don't have these squat little bitty heads on short stalks of necks, they have long graceful necks, with large eyes...one dragon I know of has eyes the size of shields, underneath well developed eye ridges for protection.
