Glare has EXACTLY one use. Boosting Focus by spending many many hours on jizo glaring at Rexes. ONLY rexes mind you. A Raptor's WP is too high for most begining characters to accomplish much other than getting very insane very quickly. The ONLY spell a mage starts with is glare. Every other spell has to be learned ICly by finding a mage willing to teach you a new spell. You only get 3 spells total as a 3rd circle mage, they are all VERY low powered, and you have to waste ALOT of crystals curing insanity constantly. Nomar mentioned that mages get "restore". Yeah... so what? Do you know what restore is good for? Healing OTHER PEOPLE. You can't use Restore on yourself, and they way I hear it if you use it on someone else and miscast you get thier injuries as insanity. Potentially VERY nasty. As I said before, a 3rd circle mage gets precisesly 3 spells, and none of the choices are particularly powerful. Not to mention you dont get MUCH of a choice since what you get to learn depends on what your teacher knows and is willing to teach you... that's provided you can FIND a teacher. To get more than 3 spells you have to get raised to 2nd circle (and higher). Someone else is better able to say how often THAT happens. All I know is that it doesn't happen much. Hell, mages can't wear ANY sort of armor while casting or all they do is go insane. That means if a mage is going to cast a spell and some nitwit comes along with a sword... ding dong the mage is dead. Mind you, I fully agree that the other classes ought to get some sort of advantages starting out. I think we all agree that the other classes all need serious development. At present, subbies get gills. Great... they can go undersea... and the critters undersea are just as dangerous as the ones on land.. maybe moreso in some cases. Recombs get a second natural weapon, maybe an extra @nudity setting, and the undisputed right to code thier appearance to look like some sort of animal. Joy. Except that you get zero control over which natural weapon strikes, and you don't get multiple attacks. Hell some of the recombs dont even have a second natural weapon. I had to pester Quinn for mine for my recomb alt. As an added bonus, recombs have thier stats @set for them. And not in a good way, believe me. I had rolled a fabulous set of stats that were actually very accurate for what my character should have been created with based on its concept... other than losing most of the willpower due to dakirion conditioning. No such luck, the stats the character has now (in my opinion) make no sense based on what the character IS and what is was created to do. Ces La Vie. One day when I have time I'll go back to trying to get my character what it needs to do what it is supposed to do. My point in all of this is that mages really honestly aren't any better off than any of the other classes, and maybe the first thing that needs to be done is the DOCS need to be updated to A) be accurate and B) tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about the current real advantages/disadvantages of each class... exactly what spending those points to get that class really entitles you to, and what changes are planned for the class in the future. It might stop some of what seemi to have become bi-monthly bitch sessions about how much more powerful this class or that class is. -------------------------- Message 833 from *ideas (#504): Date: Tue Apr 14 09:10:49 1998 CDT From: Anubis (#22578) To: *ideas (#504) Subject: I want I want I want.... No more inappropriate than fangs (preferably poisonious, even if it's weak) and a tail are inappropriate for a cobra. However.... don't hold your breath. What you are more likely to get is fists and fangs, with an unusable tail, which is what Carlyn got. I've presented ideas on how recombs can be better handled a couple times and have so far recieved no real response about it. Who knows... maybe it's being worked on... maybe it's been forgotten. If those who recall my mailing them ideas about developments for recombs could let me know I would appreciate it. Now, I don't know about you, but I can think of at least two areas that are larger than Austin ever was and if they were to be removed or cut in half, most of the people here wouldn't even care. Why do I bring this up? I think we should bring back Austin as an area accessible to players. The way I see it, it'd be interesting to wander around the twisted steel, hollowed-out shells of buildings, and the piles of rubble that I'm sure are present everywhere you turn. The whole area could be radioactive and require radiation suits and you could even throw in some glow-in-the-dark people, four-assed monkeys, and six-legged chickens for good measure. What's that, you say? Austin would still be too radioactive even for rad suits? Then pick an area on the outskirts of town or that would've been just far enough from ground zero to be lethal. Or if that doesn't please you, wait to let a few IC years go by. I don't know, it's just an idea. --Sky -------------------------- Message 844 from *ideas (#504): Date: Fri Apr 17 04:40:34 1998 CDT From: Abe (#21180) To: *ideas (#504) Subject: vampires... here's an idea for a vampire, doesnt have to be a magic, soul-sucking creature.. think sci-fi.. imagine someone with a disease that makes a normal human continue to have their cells grow, that means they might have long, sharp nails, big sharp teeth, (because of fast cellular growth) and a iron deficiency in their blood (maybe make it more like iron and nutrient deficiency?) now imagine if this subject has trouble eating normal stuff anymore, they puke up certain foods or something.. imagine a doctor who tested on some people found out that blood is one of the things that can be stomached by these people, severe allergic reaction to garlic, get REALLY sick at even slightest whiff..)
