According to the FBI, the national Crime Index rate for 2002 was 4,118. The Northeast region of the United States had the lowest crime of the four regions, with a rate of 2,889 offenses per 100,000 population. The next lowest region was the Midwest, with a Crime Index rate of 3,883 offenses. The Western region followed with a rate of 4,418 offenses, while the Southern region showed the highest crime rate of 4,722 offenses per 100,000 residents. Best Large Cities for Crime (>500,000 pop.) New Jersey boasts three of the nation's safest and most secure metro areas: Nassau-Suffolk, NY * Nassau-Suffolk has the second-lowest overall crime rate in the nation, thanks to extremely low violent and property crime rates Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, NJ The Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon area has one of the lowest murder rates in the nation, in addition to a very low rate of larceny. Ventura, CA Ventura has a very low property crime rate and one of the lowest larceny rates in the country. Monmouth-Ocean, NJ Monmouth-Ocean has one of the lowest auto theft rates in the country, and an overall low rate of property crime. Bergen-Passaic, NJ Bergen-Passaic has especially low rates of forcible rape and larceny. Best Medium Cities for Crime (200,000-500,000 pop.) New England seems to be an especially safe and secure region: Danbury, CT Danbury has lowest overall crime rate in the nation, as well as the lowest property crime rate. Stamford-Norwalk, CT Second only to its neighbor Danbury, the Stamford-Norwalk area has one of the lowest property crime rates in the U.S. Johnstown, PA Johnstown has an especially low rate of property crime. The murder rate is a bit higher than one might expect, but is still well below the U.S. average. Dutchess County, NY Dutchess County has a very low burglary rate, which helps contribute to low overall rate of property crime. Portsmouth-Rochester, NH-ME The Portsmouth-Rochester area has low rates of property and violent crime, but there is a significant rate of forcible rape. Best Small Cities for Crime (<200,000 pop.) State College, PA State College has low crime rates across the board. In particular, the burglary and auto theft rates are among the nation's lowest. Steubenville-Weirton, OH-WV Property crime is especially low in Steubenville-Weirton area, especially the rate of larceny. Wheeling, WV-OH * While property crime is extremely low in Wheeling, the rates of murder and assault are a bit higher than might be expected. Pittsfield, MA * Pittsfield not only has one of the nation's lowest murder rates, but also an exceptionally low rate of larceny. However, the rate of forcible rape is significant. Wausau, WI Like Pittsfield, Wausau's rates of murder and larceny are among the nation's lowest. The violent crime rates are also low. Worst Large Cities for Crime (>500,000 pop.) Although Arizona has two of the most crime-ridden cities in the nation, their violent crime rates are relatively low. Tucson, AZ Tucson has one of the highest property crime rates in the country, especially larceny. On the bright side, Tucson has a low murder rate. Memphis, TN-AR-MS * Residents of Memphis contend with the nation's second-highest violent crime rate. In addition, the rate of robbery and burglary are among the nation's highest. Miami, FL Miami's violent crime rate is the highest in the nation, with especially high incidences of robbery and assault. Thankfully, the murder rate is relatively low. Phoenix-Mesa, AZ Phoenix-Mesa has one of the highest rates of auto theft in the nation. Little Rock-North Little Rock, AR The Little Rock area has a high rate of property crime, especially larceny. Worst Medium Cities for Crime (200,000-500,000 pop.) On the other hand, the South seems to be particularly challenged with crime: Myrtle Beach, SC Myrtle Beach has the highest total rate of crime in the nation, due to a high rate of violent crime and the nation's highest rate of property crime. In particular, the rates of assault, burglary, and larceny are particularly high. Montgomery, AL The murder rate is significantly high in Montgomery, as are the rates of robbery, burglary, and larceny. Laredo, TX While the larceny rate is high in Laredo, residents can take comfort in the relatively low rates of murder and forcible rape. Waco, TX Like Laredo, violent crime is less of a concern in Waco than property crime. In particular, burglary and larceny are a problem. Wilmington, NC Wilmington has the second-highest rate of burglary in the country. On the other hand, the rates of forcible rape and assault are low. Worst Small Cities for Crime (<200,000 pop.) Florence, SC Assault and larceny rates are high in Florence, but the murder rate is low. -------------------------- Message 10157 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Nov 5 08:14:25 2005 EST From: Arateka (#43304) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Something weird. And completely unrelated to ghostwheel (at least the wheel part). Just a moment ago, while I was sitting here, hyperfocused on the screen (I get that way, when I've been awake entirely too long), I saw a black shadow pass by outside my window. I know for a fact that it wasn't a person, or anything else of that sort (dogs would've went nuts, even if it was someone they knew); couldn't have been a bird, or anything like that, either. But I have no idea what it could've been. I've heard people talk about stuff like this, and they usually claim it was a ghost... but I just don't know. Anyone have a somewhat more educated opinion? But I feel I must add something here. In the 7 years I have been on GW I have loved and hated thing folks have said and done. Laughed and cried about things done to me and others ic and ooc, and even left and come back hoping things have calmed down or changed. Never, tho, have I been ashamed to count myself as a friend to someone here because I think this is a moo where anything goes. Folks that think that fairness and morality here as far as a game goes is expected are always dissapointed. Quinn doesnt care, and neither should the players. Many dont like this fact and have tried to create their own playground. But that never seems to be an answer. (Even I had my own Moo for 6 years, and found that running and building a place berings all the same frustrations as playing elsemoo, except you DONT get to have the fun. you know all the tricks, code and places and you become a babysitter and policeman.) But I digress..... This feud that Gus seems to keep reliving is juvenile. Everytime he posts, he looks like a bigger baby than the last. He doesnt come to play, but only to keep dishing dirt hoping he will emerge a great guy. I, for one, have lost the respect I had for him. He is just too bitter and trying to feel better by putting others down. Gus, go ahead and pick on me for a while. I wont complain about it, and maybe then you can make peace after a bit and become the man you were meant to be. I miss the old Red. Thanks to everyone for reading this ramble. And thanks to all those that dont egg Gus on. -------------------------- Message 10210 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Nov 13 04:44:58 2005 EST From: Satarel (#44416) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Anonymity and in-game admins The in-game admin faces a bizarre problem. He is exercising power that the ordinary virtual citizen cannot. And he is looked to in many ways to provide a certain atmosphere and level of civility in the environment. Yet the fact remains that no matter how scrupulously honest he is, no matter how just he shows himself to be, no matter how committed to the welfare of the virtual space he may prove himself, people will hate his guts. They will mistrust him precisely because he has power, and they can never know him. There will be false accusations galore, many insinuations of nefarious motives, and former friends will turn against him. It may be that the old saying about power and absolute power is just too ingrained in the psyche of most people; whatever the reasons, there has never been an online game whose admins could say with a straight face that all their players really trusted them (and by the way, it gets worse once you take money!). Had to send it. -------------------------- Message 10211 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Nov 13 18:06:43 2005 EST From: Heretic (#6143) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Apologies I have been showing favoritism toward Yak and Gus by only giving them cookies, so here are cookies and naps for all the rest of you, enjoy. Or maybe the 50000 that Moonheart has. I mean, your symbolic cookies are rather tasty, but I wouldn't mind some of the more tangible favourtism that you've shown in the past. It's nice that everyone is getting upset at the pettiness and slander going on, but isn't it offensive that Heretic won't even address any issues? He smugly replied to the staff-ethics debate by pretending he doesn't do anything wrong. I mentioned some stuff that he ignored and he didn't even bother with a response. Heretic doesn't want to justify his actions to me, and thats ok. But, I find it embarassing that everyone else is being so complacent and not demanding an explanation. Question to everyone else: Are you happier with the way things are than with the way things could be? If I'm wrong in assuming that other people are upset that Heretic can arbitrarily set his alts to have a lockpick stat where he can supercede the limitations everyone else is subjected to by the code. If you're happy having Lord Heretic's foul reign over your game enjoyment then I apologize en masse to the entire moo. Let me know, maybe this is Heretic's Moo that you all came to play on and I've been ruining that by assuming he should have limitations to his power. -------------------------- Message 10214 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Nov 13 21:35:13 2005 EST From: Heretic (#6143) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Yak here take a cookie a juice box and a stuffie. Do we need a nap room? All that aside, power is power. It all depends on what you do with it. While I would love to have stats out the wazzou, I've come by mine honestly (none of this spoofie stuff, or setting macros to do my fighting for me). It's not my style. Then again, I don't knock those that choose to cheat in that manner. After all, what does the stats get you in solid rp? Sometimes I think we depend too much on the code and not enough on our creative intelligence and words onna screen. Personally, I haven't been in an rp situation where any of these hopped-up characters has taken undue advantage. I haven't had Mirg or Moonheart use their high lockpick stats to gain entry into any of my things. Of course, the one in power could just override all that anyway. So, I see the characters as they are, and continue to interact rp-wise with any character, alt or not, as an individual. But, it is late and I'm rambling. Let's see... what was my point... Ah yes. I try to be as neutral as possible, stay out of the politics. As I said, I've personally haven't been on the short end of the stick with any of the hopped-up characters, so I haven't seen them abusing their high stats. Well. Except for the costume party, but then again... it was his party and he could set the rules there. I'm not mad at Yak, or H, and just wish to close my eyes to it all and enjoy a good fantasy. Guess that makes me a political coward, but so be it. Now, can I have a hug before my nap? -------------------------- Message 10216 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Nov 14 02:02:59 2005 EST From: Heretic (#6143) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Neither or the mentioned alts have picked anyone's lock or taken anything from a locked bag. Oh and Gus have a cookie just to keep you warm and happy as you share @stats with Yak. I apologize for not understanding this sooner. People are mostly children who want to be placated and have their cookies and milk and naps. They don't care if wrongs are being made by the current administration or that things are going down hill in a hand basket quickly. As long as they have their MTV and Playstations and other forms of entertainment to hide away in. Thank goodness for a few smart people and thinkers and those who stand up and say no in the world. Note how I respond to allegations, this way people aren't left to wonder if they're true or not. Then again, since I actually didn't do those things I have a clear enough conscience to type up a post saying I'm innocent... Note to Everyone Else: I'm not so good at reading the cryptic posts. I don't ask whether or not you're mad at me. I'd rather you not be, but that's secondary. If you feel Heretic behaves ethically as a GM then please tell me and I'll stop saying otherwise. Then, when I scroll through, it turns out to be the same three people. Gus, Yak, H. Now, not saying any of you three are vile scum sucking bastards for the fact that I, in my curiosity, had to read every fucking word. Most of which was you three, once again not accusing anyone, eating cookies made of pure spam and the the blood of the fae. Still, there has to be someone to blame for this. But then you just pick and choose and people bitch about who you chose. Now. *Chat is nice and wonderful. And it would appear that it is around for things like this. A nice public dispute and people talking amongst themselves, for those who are terrified to log onto the public channel, because they fear exposure to the rough OOC elements of this beast. Not that anyone would fear public. Why we have such nice discussions on there about sex, drugs, music, the possibility or fact that H cheats, how Ruby is a whore IC, (No offense Pam, but the girl is a whore), and other such fun topics like that. And of course these disputes are always worded so politely. We all sit and watch in wonder as people kindly discuss their diffrences. There are many examples of this kind nature that I could name. But I will just quote a few. 'Go choke on a fucking cookie' 'Gus is just an old man who goes after granddaughters' 'I wish I was cool enough to have 15000 lockpick like Mirg' 'What the fuck is this shit with Mirg hunting ME' 'Your all stupid fat fuckers with no lives' That is just the tip of the iceberg. I could not hope to convey the sincere kindness this place so openly displays. Why, it is a wonder that new players do not jump on. Now, with that all said, time to drop the sarcasm. *Chat is starting to turn into fucking *Praise. It is being spammed to hell by the same nonsensical bullshit. Every post is the exact same material. Either Yak/Gus talking about H's activities and demanding a response, or H giving out textual food and naps. How about shutting the fuck up all of you. Or making another subscription, maybe called 'TALK SHIT', if you can do this H or anyone who can, to get it off of *Chat. And stop the crazy fucking spam messages that come in 20+ a day, with the same material. It is annoying as hell to read. And sometimes, just sometimes, something actually comes through *Chat that is worth reading. But I know I, for one, am not going to see it. Because I'm too busy spamming @nn to try and get past all of the useless shit. You people talk about 'saving this place', 'keeping it alive', 'putting down the cheaters', 'how people are ruining it' and all kinds of shit. -BOTH- sides say this exact same shit. When really, all its' doing is causing any actual new person who MIGHT log on, to immediately log OFF, because this place is so busy arguing about whos lockpick equals out to a bigger dick. In closing I have two messages. Shut the fuck up. And I never got a fucking cookie. - E -------------------------- Message 10231 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Nov 15 20:22:12 2005 EST From: Yak (#20718) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Satarel @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar @spoof "Go make an alt." to Elevar Whoops, left my tick timer on. -------------------------- Message 10232 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Nov 20 02:12:55 2005 EST From: Daryan (#41242) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Notice of possible absence Well, it's that time of year again.
