Here's this year's list: 1. The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1980. 2. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and did not know he had ever been shot. 3. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. 4. Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression. 5. There has been only one Pope. They can only really remember one president. 6. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. They have never feared a nuclear war. "The Day After" is a pill to them, not a movie. 8. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up, and Tiananmen Square means nothing to them. 9. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. 10. They never had a Polio shot, and likely do not know what it is. 11. Bottle caps have not only always been screw off, but have always been plastic. They have no idea what a pull-top can looks like. 12. Atari pre-dates them, as do vinyl albums. 13. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. 14. They have never owned a record player. 15. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong. 16. Star Wars look very fake to them, and the special effects are pathetic. 17. There have always been red M&Ms, and blue ones are not new. What do you mean there used to be beige ones? 18. They may have heard of an 8-track, but chances are they probably never have actually seen or heard one. 19. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old. 20. As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 32 cents. (Accurate until recently.) 21. They have always had an answering machine. 22. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV. 23. They have always had cable. 24. There have always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is. 25. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. 26. They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony. 27. Roller-skating has always meant inline for them. 28. The Tonight Show has always been with Jay Leno. 29. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool. 30. Popcorn has always been cooked in a microwave. 31. They have never seen Larry Bird play, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a football player. 32. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. 33. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII, or even the Civil War. 34. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran. 35. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. 36. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. 37. They never heard the terms: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "de plane, de plane!" 38. They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is. 39. The Titanic was found? I thought we always knew where it was. 40. Michael Jackson has always been white. 41. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups. 42. McDonald's never came in styrofoam containers. 43. There has always been MTV. -------------------------- Message 8380 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Sep 8 11:51:46 2000 EDT From: Kingfox (#23362) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: The 'damn those whippersnappers' list Heh. These are abilities which don't quite merit a full skill, but could be checked by coded puzzles or NPC to determine whether or not a player can surmount some obstacle. Also useful in general role-play. The best part of talents is that we can fully automate chargen, with each talent "buyable" in the character editor. Maybe we could move existing "uncoded skills" into another free-form section of grants given by GM. Anyhoo, I'd rather not debate how to grandfather in current uncoded skills. Instaad, I present this initial list of possible talents. Compass: Pathfinder. Scout. (Show coordinates in wasteland.) Singer: You've got a golden throat. (Sing for money in bars?) Dancer: Twinkle toes. (Dance for money in bars?) Sadist: "We have ways to make you talk." ("Encourage" an NPC?) Sniffer: Always finding things. (Better chance of finding objects.) Mimicry: Rich Little syndrome. (Eh, mostly RP in my head right now.) Stoic: Poker face. (Also RP.) Frogman: Swimming. (Simple check against drowning.) Monkey: Climbing. (Simple check against falling.) Chef: Cooking. (Mostly RP, also cooking for money?) Doodler: Good at drawing. (Caricatures in festivals for money?) Zoophiliac: Animal lover. (Luring wild animals to be your special friends.) Treehugger: Plant lover. (uh, luring Bellifloras to...) Lurker: Sneaking, hiding, remaining unnoticed. (Remove from room contents?) Forger: Fake signatures, etc. (Mostly RP, perhaps bypassing NPC guards.) Gambler: High roller. (Simple bonus for games of chance.) Acrobat: The daring young man on the flying trapeze. (Better dodge?) Bureaucrat: Talk your way out of it. (Also bypassing guards, filling forms.) Riddler: Figuring out riddles, cyphers, codes. (Good for coded puzzles.) Romeo: Smooth-talking smoothie. (Heh, bypassing guards again. Hookers?) Haggler: Bring the price down. (Good against NPC merchants.) Survivor: Make the most out of nature's least. (Avoiding thirst, starvation.) Awareness: See hit points? Better chance of noticing stuff? Student: Nerd, Geek, teacher's pet, fast learner. (More pot as you wait.) Many of the above from Wasteland, Fallout, and the old @advantages list. Any more ideas? -------------------------- Message 8390 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Sep 11 22:42:50 2000 EDT From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Well, one problem... Magic requires varied skill, though I guess you can divide it up into 'Necromancer' 'Elementalist' But the main thing I see as a problem is that those are more personalities as opposed to skills. I understand your reasoning since if we want to code sheets, you'd want to make it simple as possible but the problem is that gives less customization. Maybe part of picking a 'personality' you can have the coded sheet, but also allow players to add on small 'skill notes' to justify some of their 'extra' skills. -------------------------- Message 8391 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Sep 11 22:43:55 2000 EDT From: Uncle_Rob (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: last Or in Ed's case.. It is by far one of the most godlike films I've seen in a long, long time. Deeply surreal, great costumes, stellar cast, breathtaking visuals, lots of subtle and not-so-subtle gore. And it's -Shakespeare-, dammit. Titus Andronicus is generally referred to 'round here as `The Shakespearean Chainsaw Massacre', and damn was this ever a great rendition. -------------------------- Message 8418 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Sep 23 17:31:52 2000 EDT From: DragonBabe (#5288) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Titus Went to friends lastnight for dinner, and took Titus along to watch. Won't do that again. First, the BlockBuster I went too had it on tape only. Got to the friends place, stuck it into the player and found that the tape was fubar. So when we went for ice, we checked out the Hollywood vid store and found it on DVD. Cool! Well, not so cool. My friends talked through what portion we did watch. Finally left, the movie unfinished. Bah! What I was able to watch, and hear over my friends talking (Chris had not mentioned he disliked Shakespeare..So WHY didn't he say anything at the vid store?!) Was excellent! I must find it on DVD! Must watch WHOLE damn thing! -------------------------- Message 8419 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Sep 24 12:17:57 2000 EDT From: Styx (#1610) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Trailer Park Looking for residents.
