Next time could you post about the tp a bit sooner? :) Some of us have to schedule our playtime on the weekends between cutting wood, cleaning house, doing laundry and watching the 5 videos your husband decides to bring home while out buying sparkplugs. By the way, The Generals Daughter is very entertaining. I have question though, and its not because I think offering incentives to players it is a bad idea. What constitutes good RP? I think good rp is a player who never, ever goes out of character while playing, who can improvise and move with the flow of the plot no matter what happens (unless it becomes totally twinkish or steams beyond your comfort zone, i.e. rape). But this is just my thought, and I'm sure most everyone has their own thoughts on good and bad rp, so who is going to decide what is good rp or bad? Personally, I think guidelines should be set, otherwise I'm afraid it will turn out to be a popularity contest. -------------------------- Message 8003 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Feb 6 13:16:20 2000 EST From: Raichu (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Good RP. My idea of good RP is giving it the good ole try. In other words, you ATTEMPT to roleplay. You don't idle in the middle of the TP and then expect a reward. I hope I can get answers to them because I don't like the feeling of playing a game where the rules are made up as we go along. 1. Please define "abuse of code" and tell me why it is nowhere in the game help files. 2. In only one place in the Game files is it stated that coded combat is involuntary. Just exactly at what point does coded combat override Player's Rights:paragraph 1 of the Game Files? 3. I was told yesterday that a player can now attack another player even when idle. When did this change and why wasn't it posted to *db? Does this mean if I go off to answer the door or go to the bathroom I can still be attacked while I'm AFK? What if I'm lagged out? 4. If I'm attacked while I am idle and the attack isn't permitted because of being idle, do I HAVE to unidle and engage in combat? Doesn't this override paragraph one of the Player's Rights? I really want to know the answers to these questions. They not only affect me but every other player on this MOO. -------------------------- Message 8050 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Feb 14 16:58:26 2000 EST From: Bishamon (#23011) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re: Questions 1. As far as the attack while Idle, as far as I know its like 5 minutes idle, anything more then that and you get a message about it being wrong or some such nonsense....Personally, I think if you are idle in an IC place, you have to deal with the fact that someone is going to come along and keel you. You cheat your ass off, and then try to whine about it? This is gall of an unbelievable caliber. Holy shit, I'm actually impressed that your skewing of reality is so complete that you really do now live in a world that is utterly alien to that of the rest of us. For those not in the know, here's what happened, even if it means I lose my bit for the telling of it. I AM SICK OF HYPOCRISY, PLAIN AND FUCKING SIMPLE. Merri and Raichu were in pages. Discussing OOC stuff. Initially, Merri was in an OOC area. Merri then went IC to scout out an area. It's been argued that this may, or may not, be an IC act. If this tower was not pre-existing, it is an IC act. If it already existed, then it could be OOC. EITHER WAY, Merri was IC and in public. Dante and Clayson arrived at that public location, and blocked the exit. Merri asked Raichu to grab her, to continue the conversation, on coming out of idle, thus removing her from harm's way. Raichu was under the impression that Merri was still in the OOC areas, and that moving her would not affect the IC world in any way. Merri, the person first to cast blame or try to create suspcion of others, was doing this to escape an IC situation -- aka CHEATING. The game docs, and endless *list posts, have ALWAYS stated that YOU CAN NOT NO-CONSENT TO COMBAT. Being killed, and being looted, are parts of this game, plain and simple. Like it or not, that is the way it is, and has always been. Whether you can walk around IC or not really isn't relevant. It's a shame. Merri COULD have said something. She could have said, `Hey, I'm not really here, we need to do this later.' Instead, she abused, yes, ABUSED, the idle protection, and then asked to be moved by a GM instead. Regardless of why she was there, there is NO EXCUSE for that. People have been looted on their way to the replicator, or to the PEC -- for cryin' out loud, does she think she's entitled to better than the rest of the MOO? Bear in mind -- this is on par with using @home or losing link to escape IC events. It's using code to avoid a situation. The idle protection exists to protect those who ARE NOT ABLE to respond, not to protect those who just don't want to have to deal with IC situations that arise. We've jailed people for disconning to avoid combat, we've jailed people for using other means to escape combat. Now she'd like to claim that she didn't want to RP with them, and because of that, combat would never arise. Well, sorry honey, it doesn't work that way. I've walked into rooms and been KO'd without a word, as have many others. I don't see why you have special protection from it. I'd also like to know why this is coming from the grand champion of `never excluding anyone from RP' who claims she would RP with anyone, given the chance. Well, here was a chance! But no, it could have meant something bad happening to her character, so Nooooooo, we can't have that! Never! Such a damned hypocrite. ESCAPING COMBAT BY OOC MEANS IS CHEATING. HELLO, MERRI!!! Here's the paste: ---------------- Dante arrives from below, his breath misting out in white puffs. Clayson arrives from below, her breath misting out in white puffs. Dante pokes idle Merri. Clayson says, "she is idle." Clayson looks at you. Clayson holds her diving knife calmly, admiring the blade. Clayson says, "wake up Merri." 'jazz Transport NOW. Clayson is staring at me :< if the Divine master plan is perfection, maybe next I'll give Judas a try. (Raichu got your page.) Dante murmurs something to Clayson. Clayson blocks exit to the north. -------------------------- Message 8056 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Feb 14 18:00:26 2000 EST From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: ----------------- Merri says, "This is a crock of shit. I was there to work on the tower, not RP. And they THOUGHT they were going to trap me. Even Steve says I could have just outwaited them by staying idle." ------...so honest, so fair, no non-cheat, huh? There's her real face, folks. Trying to get away with whatever she can, and not giving a damn about the intent of code -- just how she can exploit it. There's her real face, whining that we told her she shouldn't have asked to be taken out of an IC situation! How do you think she would have reacted if she was the one waiting, and someone else asked to be moved with a lame excuse, and without a word of explanation??? There would be whiny, bitchy posts from here to doomsday about how the GM was a cheat, everyone is out to get her, and how this place sucks, etc. etc. Here's more: ------- Raichu says, "Well, apparently I pulled Merri out of an IC situation unwittingly. Dante and Clayson were up to no good. I'm not sure how much of this is IC or quasi IC. Fact is, they were all IC out on the grid and Dante and Clay are upset with me for doing it." Merri says, "I was idle. They couldn't attack me anyway. All I had to do was stay idle and outwait them." You say, "Ok. IC is IC in my mind. If you're IC, you're gaining potential for that time." Merri says, "There is NO rule that would have required me to unidle. That's not abuse of code." You say, "And idling to wait really is an abuse of code. You're out on the grid." You say, "No, there is no rule." Merri says, "You don't gain pot when you're idle. You HAVE to be active to gain pot." You say, "But the code exists -ONLY- to protect those who are not at their screen." You say, "Or have lost link in some manner." Merri says, "I wasn't at my screen. I was fixing the kids breakfast off and on and talking to Ep about building the tower." You say, "Talking to Ep while IC is being active, and you were gaining pot for it." You say, "And that is not an IC activity." Merri says, "So your saying I'm WRONG?????" Karma [to Merri]: Yes, I am. You say, "You were IC, on the grid, in public." Merri says, "I was at the spot where the tower was to be built. That was the ONLY reason I was active." Merri says, "Take it to Quinn." You say, "You could have been OOC once you arrived there." Merri says, "Take it to Quinn." You say, "Trust me, I will indeed do so." You say, "You asked a GM to remove you from a situation you placed yourself in." Merri says, "point is, I could have STILL have avoided the fight by staying idle. If the pot is an issue then deduct whatever 10ths of a point I would have earned. That wasn't why I was there." You say, "Staying idle to avoid a fight is abuse of code, period." You say, "Just as logging out to avoid combat or capture is abuse of code." Merri says, "It is NOT. You don't gain pot while idle and as far as I'm concerned it's perfectly legal. There are NO rules that say you can't or require you to unidle or go IC. Consent rule says that RP is by consent." You say, "And you have NO choice when it comes to combat. NONE." You say, "And that includes using code to prevent attack." Merri says, "Take it to Quinn." You say, "What you did was the equivalent of @home." Merri says, "I refuse to discuss this any further." You say, "As I said, I fully plan to." Merri has lost her link. --------- There's her way of handling her actions. I talked to Quinn, too. Here was my favorite line: -------- Quinn says, "The brunt of the blame lies on her." Quinn says, "But I don't think Raichu is to blame, and blaming Merri casts blame on Raichu." --------- So there you have it, folks. Merri is so innocent. So righteously angry at her mistreatment. There's the truth for you, in your face. -------------------------- Message 8057 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Feb 14 18:11:56 2000 EST From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: [Tirafal (#24173): Your post] Date: Mon Feb 14 18:10:41 2000 EST From: Tirafal (#24173) To: Karma (#20542) Subject: Your post Thank you, Karma, for the spam. That is the intent of the code. Abuse of code is using code for that which it is not intended. Using idle protection to hide is using idle protection for that which it is not intended. Abuse of code is cheating. This is a logical progression, please follow along. -------------------------- Message 8061 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Feb 14 18:22:06 2000 EST From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) In response, however, from the game files: THEFT Theft is also considered a normal part of life in the GhostMOO world. If your equipment is taken when you're unconscious, that's a logical event. No object will be given plot immunity because it's `part of my character concept'. Consent doesn't protect you from being robbed. Other than combat- if you don't wish to interact, IMMEDIATELY tell the other players OOCly that you have to excuse yourself, and leave the area. The goal is for -all- players to have fun, and not for -some- players to 'win' while others 'lose.' We prefer that players who don't like each other, not stand in the same room together. We don't permit the old rule some MUSHes use that players can declare that they "don't consent to exist" in one another's continuities. There is only -one- continuity here. We understand that real-world factors such as lag and typing speed make combat between players potentially unfair. As the nature of our game is to attempt to provide an -exciting- experience, however, we must apologize to those with slower connections. If you don't wish to engage in combat, stay out of public areas where combat is possible. We also recommend that you not multiworld or idle; it makes you a -very- inviting target. -------------------------- Message 8062 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Feb 14 18:24:30 2000 EST From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: FYI Hi, I don't like to beat up people. Whether or not they comply is their decision. They're allowed to fight and kill you. > 2. In only one place in the Game files is it stated that coded > combat is involuntary. Just exactly at what point does coded > combat override Player's Rights:paragraph 1 of the Game Files? Ongoing attacks on a player may or may not be considered harassment. A few people are getting on my back about this, so I'm posting to make sure it's straight for everyone. I'm going to be gone for a while, perhaps permanently, as my bit. A lot of people are on me about it, but while it's not entirely voluntary, I planned on it anyway. (Ask the bossman if you like.) Most people who heard me say it on channel asked why, and it's really simple. The staff has rules, just like everybody else. Everyone who sees me post knows that I'm a rules junkie, both in letter-of-the-rule and spirit-of-the-rule. One of our rules is that GM conversations don't go public. I know that rule, and I agreed to follow it when I signed on as staff. I also broke it today, and did, and still do, feel justified in having done so. I'm not going to go into why; the people who know me already know the why of it, and all related motives, which is good enough for me. I didn't, and don't, feel good about having done it, but I don't regret the decision, either. Quinn and I have discussed this, and while I don't know if he understands, I think he knows where I'm coming from in regards to the matter, at the very least. Some people have said that what I did was no worse than this or that, or that something else forgives it, or that it was natural for me to respond as I did -- but, guys? That's not important. The rules are the same for everyone, period, end of story. I've said that time and time again, so if I make an exception for myself, ask for an exception, or even allow any of you to justify it in some way, it means nothing I've been saying all this time makes a difference (and that I'm the hypocrite, something I wouldn't tolerate) -- that we still think it's ok to have different rules for different people. Guys? I love you all for thinking well of me, but I really need you to understand this. Even if it wasn't being enforced, I'd make sure it was. It's just part of -me-, and I hope you can all get that in some way. On the whole, there are many ironies in this situation, though they're something I'll avoid getting into on the whole -- please don't ask. I find it thought-provoking that, in the end, there are so many rights and wrongs that they're nigh-impossible to keep straight. Some wishes have been granted in spite of themselves, but not in the way they were initially composed -- which, in itself, may fundamentally alter them more than I can currently measure. For whatever it matters, I'll still be on as a PC, Seraph. I have friends here, and I'd like to think they're not just my friends because of the `Geo' that had been after my name. (Granted, some folks hated me for it, so who knows? *wink*) Anyway, see you on the IC-side and on the scrabble board. I'm going to be in and out over the next few weeks, getting my portfolios ready for my trip, and will be finishing my second piece for competition. (It may be too late to enter, but hey -- it never hurts to try.) I'll be in Paris from March 6th-16th (the dates have just been finalized) so will definately be out of touch over that period of time on all alts. Surely this place is a Place of EVIL and DARKNESS. The stone walls surround you in their icy, marble fingered grasp, sucking the very life from you... All about, 'people' in black and crimson robes march about in some slow... sick... procession of THE DAMNED, for they are the WAITERS of OBLIVION. They have obviously given themselves unto a THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE, which currently writhes and pulsates on the raised dias at the center of this place... this... CAFE of ULTIMATE EVIL. Its black limbs, tentacles of inky darkness, the very DARKNESS of the VOID, pulsate and throb, waving about the many-eyes center of the THING. A few rock slabs, altars, couches of cold marble where THE DAMNED REST THEIR FEET are arranged about the writhing MONSTROSITY, where the THING seems to be SERVING THEM TEA. Surely this place is damned. Surely, for it is... THE CAFE OF ULTIMATE EVIL... where the PRICES... are very... REASONABLE. -------------------------- Message 8093 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Feb 19 08:24:52 2000 EST From: Sister_Mary (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: I just can't win. I have the absolute cold from hell. It's so bad that my neck is stiff and just aches constantly. I can barely move it from side to side and it's hard to look down. On top of that, both my ears are horribly plugged up, and the right side of my jaw now aches so bad that it's hard to chew anything. I hate this, have I mentioned that before? Worse yet, when seeing my doctor yesterday he blew it all off as just a virus and I'll get better in a few days. I've had this cold for well over a week now. It's _not_ going away. I think it's time to change docs. -------------------------- Message 8094 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Feb 19 09:03:18 2000 EST From: Seraph (#16551) To: *Chat (#5391) Hoooooray!
