A handsome, middle aged man walked quietly into the cafe and sat down. Before he ordered, he couldn't help but notice a group of younger men at the table next to him. It was obvious they were making fun of something about him, and it wasn't until he remembered he was wearing a small pink ribbon on the lapel of his suit that he became aware of what the joke was all about. The man brushed off the reaction as ignorance, but the smirks began to get to him. He looked one of the rude men square in the eye, placed his hand beneath the ribbon and asked, quizzically, "This?". With that the men all began to laugh out loud. The man he addressed said, as he fought back laughter, "Hey, sorry man, but we were just commenting on how pretty your little ribbon looks against your blue jacket!" The middle aged man calmly motioned for the joker to come over to his table, and invited him to sit down. As uncomfortable as he was, the guy obliged, not really sure why. In a soft voice, the middle aged man said, "I wear this ribbon to bring awareness about breast cancer. I wear it in my mother's honor." "Oh, sorry dude. She died of breast cancer?" "No, she didn't. She's alive and well. But her breasts nourished me as an infant, and were a soft resting place for my head when I was scared or lonely as a little boy. I'm very grateful for my mother's breasts, and her health." "Umm," the stranger replied, "yeah." "And I wear this ribbon to honor my wife," the middle aged man went on. "And she's okay, too?", the other guy asked "Oh, yes." "She's fine. Her breasts have been a great source of loving pleasure for both of us, and with them she nurtured and nourished our beautiful daughter 23 years ago. I am grateful for my wife's breasts, and for her health." "Uh huh. And I guess you wear it to honor your daughter, also?" "No. It's too late to honor my daughter by wearing it now. My daughter died of breast cancer one month ago. She thought she was too young to have breast cancer, so when she accidentally noticed a small lump, she ignored it. She thought that since it wasn't painful, it must not be anything to worry about." Shaken and ashamed, the now sober stranger said, "Oh, man, I'm so sorry mister". "So, in my daughter's memory, too, I proudly wear this little ribbon, which allows me the opportunity to enlighten others. Now, go home and talk to your wife and your daughters, your mother and your friends. And here . . ." The middle aged man reached in his pocket and handed the other man a little pink ribbon. The guy looked at it, slowly raised his head and asked, "Can ya help me put it on?" This is breast cancer awareness month. Do regular breast self-exams and have annual mammograms if you are a woman over the age of 45. And encourage those women you love to do the same. Please send this on to anyone you would like to remind of the importance of breast cancer awareness. And remember breast cancer strikes men, too. -------------------------- Message 7547 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Nov 4 02:52:44 1999 EST From: Tirafal (#24173) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: The previous post When I had this forwarded to me in e-mail it struck much closer to home then anyone realizes. My daughter's sister-in-law (her husband's sister) is 26 years old and has been battling breast cancer for 2 years. She is the mother of a 6 year old and a 4 year old. It now appears this woman, who has put up such a courageous fight for her life, is losing her battle. Just today she was taken to surgery and had fluid drained from around her heart. They also biopsied the heart itself. She has had a number of surgeries before, including the removal of a tumor from her brain. But if it has invaded her heart there is literally nothing they can do. Breast cancer affects everyone, young or old, male or female. I myself have lost an aunt, a cousin and a mother-in-law to the disease. Every woman who dies from breast cancer was someone's daughter, aunt, sister, mother, friend. Although unless you homeshcool your kids, they're going to end up worse, because the Mojave also has the highest occurence of other people's children who just can't seem to interact in a calm, socially acceptable manner. In my middle school, there were no less than 6 pyromaniacs, 4 people who were sociopathically inclined to beat on the nearest living thing with the nearest weapon they could find, and another 8 who would punch someone for even looking at them funny. And we're not talking the way some little kids punch eachother in the shoulder and threaten to hurt worse if the victim tells on them. We're talking a full contact punch to the nose or mouth that makes professional bareknuckles look like a friggin' tea party. Best way to avioid your kids going insane... move to a very sparsely populated area, homeshool them, and let them interact in social situations only with people who aren't demonstrably insane. Howdy. A little while ago a GM rediscovered for the 35th time that I owned two items, a katana and a sledge hammer, items that I obtained via @ic quests and crystal payments a very long time ago. This was, in fact, the common practice. The two items were @chowned away, an act the authority to which I do not question. However, the explanation as to suddenly why _now_ these items were illegal was that the Rules have changed (there is concern that a PC would use @move cheats to regain them, a act I note in passing that I have never been accused of.) In any event, I defended my claim on the basis that if one rule is now to be applied retroactively, _all_ rules should be. As authorities, I cited several PCs that I had noted whose .sheets and general status seemed to be, well, off. My purpose in doing so was not to critique or accuse them, but merely to demonstrate how my own status fell into the universe of outdated skills and abilities. This was naughty. Naturally, none of the PCs I mentioned in passing need believe me, and I fully expect to be @icly slain innumerable times for my OOC words. Karma informs me that I am a moron, and I agree. To atone for my sins, I hereby propose that I be @jailed for a time to be determined by a consensus amongst you, the readers. This will accomplish three things: (1) Placation of those who feel I have attacked them. (2) Provide some momentary diversion and entertainment to disinterested parties. (3) Ensure that the halls and byways of the R/T and outlying areas remain pristine and unsullied by the presence of myself and others engaged in wanton acts of RP and interaction. The consensus will proceed as follows: You, the reader, may post to *chat with a recommended @jail term in number of days. All votes, be they Tek, PC, Geo, or NPC, will be given equal weight. The first 20 suggested jail terms will be averaged to arrive at the appropriate sentence. I will then choose a wizard to @jail me. By submitting a recommendation, you inherently agree to the following terms: (1) The range of terms is 0-300 days, inclusive. Votes higher or lower than this range will default to the appropriate limit. (2) As this is an OOC vote for OOC crimes, votes by Alts and Guests will be discounted. (3) Votes are irrevocable. Once cast, they are permanent. In order to keep this properly amusing, one may add any or all justification to one's bid that one sees fit. Insults and slander are encouraged, but must be accompanied by a valid vote. I will start the bidding with a typical-formate vote. ***************************************************** In the matter of the People v. Elendil (A) Did Elendil own his own weapons? Yes. You can be a fire and damnation type and just dread going to hell so much that you actually live it day to day.. If I was to pass out pitty or sorrow for someones hell.. It would be for the little ones who don't know why they are there.. For those who suffer from things that they CAN'T control.. Of course.. I only know what I know from my own small experences.. Suffer if you must.. But if you can do something about it.. Then do something.. I'm constantly running into people who get all IC'ly offended or snotty when you look at them. Think logically. If someone enters a room and you look at them, that doesn't mean you want to start a war or have sex with them, it just means you wanna take a peek at what they've managed to right up for a description. I can understand if you are constantly being looked at by the same person, but one time is more of a passing glance in my opinion, unless you RP otherwise. Sorry, sorta. The real point of this post, though, was to tell you all of the free System of a Down concert I went to on Saturday in the parking lot of a nearby Best Buy. It was fucking spectacular... about an hour of straight playing, and I pitted shirtless the entire time despite the fact I had a performance that night. My torso is still scratched and bruised as all hell, but it was well worth it... you could also tell who the real fans of the band were and who just heard "Sugar" on the radio because the former knew every lyric to every song... I pride myself very much on the fact that I nearly ruined my vocal chords making this known to all. Heh. There was shouting and smoking and chants of "fuck the system" and in the end mounted police came and eventually broke the whole thing up... but not before I scored a free poster and a bass pick signed by Shavo. Considering he is the only person on this moo with wiz powers, I am now forced to concede the point that he is actually what he says I accused him of being. A situation occured where a player was remotely killed while offline by a voodoo doll. This event was a curiosity for a number of reasons: 1. The voodoo dolls are capable of inflicting insanity remotely but are incapable of a remote kill. 2. The player was offline and (supposedly) offline killing by an aHab is impossible. Logs had been made and were kept as backup proof of this event. An initial investigation was mounted by a GM and logs were kept of the findings, however even the GMs can go so far. To even begin to find out how this event occured required an investigation by a wizbit. Mail, along with copies of the logs, were sent to Quinn. 9 days passed before the player got a reply from Quinn. The reply was short and basically amounted to a "tough shit". Not only did he apparently not attempt to even try to investigate the hows or whys of the event he told her to investigate it herself, knowing full well she had taken it as far as she could go with no bits whatsoever. Despite the fact that the death was clearly illegal if for no other reason then she was offline at the time it occured, he didn't even make any attempts to rectify and reverse the death. A naked sword-wielding man burst into a south London church during Mass Sunday, slashing and stabbing members of the congregation. Ten people were injured, three seriously. Six of the injured suffered stab wounds, including a man who lost part of a hand. The others were hurt in a stampede to get out of St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church in Thornton Heath, a London suburb. Two other men armed with sticks followed the man into the church, lashing out at some of the 400-member congregation, the priest, Canon John Lennon, said. Several men in the congregation, including an off-duty policeman, wrestled the man to the ground as he lashed out with the 3-foot-long sword, witnesses said. Police said they arrested a 35-year-old man. There was no word of other arrests. The motive for the attack was not clear. ``I had just finished the sermon and I looked up and a number of men came rushing in,'' Lennon said. ``There were at least three of them. One was naked and brandishing a machete or sword and the others were slashing out at the congregation with sticks while they ran down the aisle.'' The most severely injured victim, a 55-year-old man, had his thumb and index finger severed and suffered deep slashes in the jaw and neck, said officials at the nearby Mayday Hospital, where the injured were brought. ``It defies description,'' said Dr. Kambiz Hashemi, one of five surgeons who treated the victim. Among the other victims _ most of them elderly _ two men had bad shoulder lacerations, but were in stable condition, said the hospital's chief executive, Keith Ford. The others had less serious injuries, including one who suffered a broken leg during the melee to get out. A trail of blood led from the church, located in an usually quiet suburban street. Police said the arrested man came from the area, but priests at St. Andrew's said he was not known in the parish. The attack happened moments before some 100 children were due to return to the Mass from an adjoining hall, where they had separate prayers and stories. A churchgoer, Marie Parcou, 66, said she saw her husband spouting blood and pulled him to the ground. ``I cannot believe this happened in a church,'' she said. ``I thought I had seen everything over the years, but nothing as awful as this,'' said Canon Lennon. Canon is a rank of priest senior to Father but below Monsignor. Meanwhile, a local lawmaker, Richard Ottaway, said the attack showed that ``no legislation in the world could cater for this kind of thing.'' ``We have banned handguns, put security cameras into hospitals, but there's a limit to how we can protect ourselves,'' added Ottaway. Britain, where gun laws are among the strictest in the world, banned handguns after a lone gunman shot dead 16 kindergarten children and their teacher at a school in Dunblane, Scotland, in March 1996. -------------------------- Message 7655 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Nov 29 14:22:48 1999 EST From: Clayson (#17237) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Tirafal - the great poopoo head! I have read the process of dealing with the admin here, I went to the area where you ring the bell... and asked the GM that answered if I could find out any info on the death. I'm only active on this MOO, ALWAYS ic'ly, mostly alone. I hunt crystal, and am trying to learn all kinds of things about the game. I talk to damn few people here, and am most always hidden. This is a campaign?? As far as ME naming names or making accusations, I have talked to one GM, and sent mail to Quinn. period. never accused, just asked how i could die when I was offline for hours, hadn't been in the swamp in days, was OOC while asleep, in a tent I owned, an ooc area as far as I can tell, and locked. The person I share the tent with had been idling for a few hours when all of a sudden he saw my odeath_msg and my corpse. He asked me to come here and long on, I awoke in MidRealm. I simply wanted to know if the voodoo are coded to kill, weeks after an attack. Even days after the last kill of the doll by a different player. And if the doll can kill remotely, unprovoked. This could only be answered by Quinn. He gave me his answer. Find out on my own. Since I cant see code, I have reluctantly dropped the issue. It seems the more you people post about something that only a few with bits were privvy to, the more I have to wonder just WHO reads over someones shoulder, listens to channel, or reads snitch notes. Since the log isn't enough proof to satisfy Quinn, there IS no such thing as an illegal death and it should be written into game help. -------------------------- Message 7680 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Nov 30 09:02:14 1999 EST From: Vertemis (#23360) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: I'm gonna try not to get dragged into the shouting match, cause I love you all, however.. There are many reasons why an AHAB would attack an offline character. Perhaps she dropped link and by the time the MOO noticed she was already dead, maybe the AHAb had the attack queued already and when she disconnected it still got one shot in. The thing is, I'm pretty sure you don't get a free attack in if you're offline, which means she had the same chance of repelling/avoiding/dodging whatever the attack as if she was alive in the first place. Lastly, let's say it was a freak death. Then that's what it was, there's no need to write whole game files on how you probably won't ever, but there might be a chance, that sometime you perhaps will die if you drop connection while fighting. She said that she was finally over average and lost a few points. Hell, I'll spar her back up to where she was if it'll stop all the sending, but I doubt it will. Gravel Path [Metairie Cemetery] A gravel pathway leads into the cemetery, winding and twisting past mausoleums and upraised graves. You see no underground graves here for a reason. The swampy land surrounding N'Orleans requires that all burial be done above ground. Any copings will eventually be thrust from the earth. The bed is invitingly empty. There's lotsa other blunt, sledges are good, but high on fatigue, nunchucks are fast couple of cool staves and mace or two. etc.. Sometimes they're hard to come by though. -------------------------- Message 7694 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Dec 1 07:47:50 1999 EST From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Someone suggested that we try to avoid misc. flaming, accusations, arguments, etc. as much as possible on *chat for December. Well, whoever suggested it, good idea. As it's now the first of the month, let's try it. The current situation under discussion, for better or for worse, has become a dead issue to the best of my knowledge. There is no way for the staff to investigate it any further than has already been done. We don't know what happened. I'd like to know what happened, personally, since it involved creations of mine, coded entirely by Quinn, so we can all insure that it won't happen again. We've both looked at what we can, and while what information is recorded makes no sense, that is precisely the problem. The reason -why- this happened isn't apparent, and further checking hasn't revealed any additional information to help clarify. No system is infallible, and ours is no exception. We have to rely on facts, and only facts. No matter how much is said, unless we're able to see it with our own eyes, it's hard to prove. I'm not saying that I doubt anything from any side that's been told to me, but I'm not saying that I believe it, either. The plain truth is that I don't know, and in the present situation, I don't think it's possible to know for certain what caused the situation. I'm sorry it happened. I don't like to see anyone upset, or see code glitches, etc. etc. The truth is that I don't -know-for-a-fact- why it happened, nor does anyone else who has come forward. At this point, nothing more can be done. Can we please stop the chatwars? -------------------------- Message 7695 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Dec 1 10:50:49 1999 EST From: Valentine (#24957) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Pledge I, Valentine, hereby pledge not to flame anyone, anything, or other via mailing list, channel, or voodoo doll, during the course of the month of December.
