And you'll be happy to know, Tarla, that I have plenty of well adjusted RL friends to play with. The internet can be very dangerous if you let it. I've read things and actually seen it happen where someone was tracked down IRL with ONLY the first name and the generaal area where that person lived. And actually, as a matter of fact, if someone's good, they can track you down just with your email address. Although, for the most part, I've found that people on this MOO are mostly... well, not to use another generalization or anything, but I'd figure with several of them living with eachother, and most of you going to those "MOO bashes" every chance you get, I'd figure most of the people on this MOO are pretty harless. And then again, THAT can be faked. And another thing, I have every right to be paranoid. Even to the point of paranoid psychosis as long as it doesn't spill over into any manner of behavior that breaks any kind of law, like hurting someone. And, for those of you who care, this is the exact reason that I try VERY hard not to OOC. It always ends up in me putting up something I believe or somethint that's happened to me or a friend that I'd like the rest of you people to avoid, and I get flamed, as if that could never happen, and it's just plain stupid. It's happened. To me. I don't know who the hell said it, but I'm going to quote it again, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there aren't people who are actually out to get you." You honestly think I'd be so cautious if something bad didn't already happen? Trust me, it can, it did to me, and it still does to all kinds of people. So the following is just how I see it (be nice to Valentine, she's dead, and very delicate at the moment): IC is of course IC. We create characters and we live in them for a while. Once upon a time, a half a dozen writers said, at one time or another, 'I didn't realize the book was going to go in that direction, but *whatever character in the book* demanded that it happen that way.' On MOOs, social or RP, the same thing happens. We give a creature of our imagination form and substance; we give him/her/it a voice, and then we let our child go out into the world and play. Sometimes they play nice, sometimes they don't, but for a while, we are able to hitchhike along for the ride: a bit of virtual possession, so to speak. The IC character _is_ us, just like anything we create is a part of us. Perhaps the character exposes a bit more anger than we would show in RL, perhaps a bit more compassion, perhaps a bit more courage, or articulation, or better fashion sense, even...but they are not _not_ us, any more than a character in a novel I write is _not_ me. At the same time, they are a very distant reflection of our true selves. They are not the depths, but only the shallows. And they like to kill cainids by the dozens. OOC is harder. When we connect to a social or RP moo, we enter the world of virtuality. Here we are separated from one another by miles, and states, and continents, but also only by the tapping of a keyboard. We determine each other's faults, strengths, intelligence, and very being by what we see typed here. Personally, I try to adhere to Sheri S. Tepper's philosophy in _Beauty_: if you hate, then you are putting hate into the world; if you love, then the world is a more loving place. Often, I fail, both OOC and IRL. But I give it a try. But OOC is no more who we are than IC is, it is just a different aspect of us...not as contained by the container that is the character. There are people who adore their anonymity on MOOs -- I am among them, though I don't try as hard as I used to. I have shared personal facts, deep secrets, with people on this MOO. Five years ago that wouldn't have happened. One of my best friends on the GhostWheel only found out my real name three days ago (Sorry, I'm not going to throw it in here like I've seen in several recent posts -- Call me Vale (veil?) if you like, I'll answer). My point is that it is very difficult to be the people we are in everyday, romp-about life, on a black (or whatever color) screen on a computer desk. Here we can be a bit more free, or a bit more refined, or a bit more social, or a bit less. We can be the things that we can't be IRL. OOC is still a character, even if we're getting closer to _us-ness_. This is not to deny Red's (Rob's) _himself-ness_, or his philosophy, or anyone else who feels that way (I just used your name, Red, `cause it came to mind first). No, I just feel that the computer is a masque, and we all come in costume. This would be true even if IRL I really _did_ look like Valentine (she's crazy, but darned cute). Now we get to the interesting part, because, since we see the innermost thoughts of the people we interact with -- through their writing, which I believe to be one of the most intimate acts (no jokes, please) people can share -- are bared out for all to see, OOC _and_ IC can be _more_ than casual friends could ever learn about us. What do you know about me from the way that I write? Go ahead, do some text-analysis here. You might know far more than I want you to. So, IRL I might not be nearly as..er..charming as I am here. We all know this. I might very well be a serial killer, or a game show host, or a housewife, or any number of things. We know this. Most of us have had strange experiences which deal with the meeting of a MOO-friend IRL, and discovering that we don't like them. Or do. The second option is just as strange as the first. We are hardly ever who we are when taken out of the element in which those who know us have grown accostomed to seeing us. We each have to decide how much, and how far we can trust those people miles, states, continents...a monitor...away from us. Just like we have to decide how far we can trust the people we meet at the local club, or at work, or school. Well, this turned into a long philosophical ramble. I hope no one minds too much, but I've thought about these things for a long time, like a lot of you have, and I just wanted to put it out there for you. I'll go now and kill some cainids. Not seeing much combat these days? Stats in the billions? Do you mean combat between players? Hell, no there's no coded combat between players. Ever since the system changed there's too much chance of accidentally killing somebody and walking around with PK stuck to your name for the rest of your life. Yes, I go to the swamp. And one hit kill almost everything in it. The slisssh were at least a challenge. I have a 550 focus. Do you REALLY think I want to go to GW plain and just give up and accept that the Chim is going to kill me? When Quinn made the changes in the combat system last spring he chanted "Be careful out there." like it was some kind of litany. Ok. I'm being careful. I'm avoiding GW plain entirely because I have no idea when the chim is going to jump out and nail my ass. I REFUSE to accept the complete inevitably of death. Knock out GW plain and now the slisssh where else is there for me to go? Dixie? Don't make me laugh. As for "stats in the billions"; I'm not a low stated character but I'm not exactly way up there either. There are a heck of a lot more people running around out there and hunting with higher stats then I have (by a long shot!) Oh, and I DID try going to the Wastes. In over an hour and a half of roaming around (not necessarily aimless, I did have a gps and mapped) I walked away with a whopping 180 crystal and not even fully boosted. I think I killed something like 20 slisssh. The wastes wouldn't be a bad place to go if their was something there other then the slisssh who are just spread too thinly. But as it stands right now, it's mind numbing. What IS the point of the combat system? Why was it ever developed in the first place? Yeah, it's fun running around and boosting stats in a competitive way with other characters but that seems to be all it's good for. (Although there seems to be a general distaste for "spar munkies" here.) Coded combat no longer exists between players (see above). So what's the point? If hunt boosting just to raise stats is the point of it, then why make changes that discourage even THAT? I also raw RP (in fact here lately I've been doing a LOT of that). It's fun too. But whether the combat system existed or not makes no difference there. So once again, what's the point of even HAVING a combat system? For that matter, what's the point of having a magic system? I never see coded spell casting between players and the spells are useless for combat. So, once again, what's the point? Would somebody please explain this MOO to me? -------------------------- Message 7233 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Oct 6 13:31:59 1999 EDT From: Merri (#24667) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Rand's post Actually, I think it's not a half bad idea. I like roaming around and knowing that my sense of exploration could get my stats slaughtered (as well as seeing the good ole Eagle again). Of course, I think characters ought to be able to kill each other off, too. Perhaps there should be a different outcome depending on whether you are killed by a critter or by a PC. What that outcome might be, I don't know. Perhaps death-by-player doesn't reduce your stats as much (or maybe more); perhaps they can't steal your stuff without your permission (or maybe they automatically get it all) -- I don't know, and that's not my point here. My point is...well, okay, maybe I don't have a point. Maybe I'm just talking because all the mini-raps run away from me. Why have a coded combat system? So instead.. * Death penalty is already HEAVY. It is not nearly as bad as I've seen elseM**, but enough to deter many players from freely bringing their characters out to where someone's itchy trigger finger costs them months of character buildup. Example (atypical) = For Slayer, this would mean a loss of roughly 200000 total_power, 4 atts over 100, 100 melee/dodge, 335 armed, 275 bladed, etc. I don't fear death to the point of hiding my chars (just don't like RP that much), but I assure you I don't take death lightly. * Boosting everything off of beasties is too easy.. There was much more player interaction when you had to boost off of other characters. * Slisssh -- maybe 2 or 3 'pop-up' locations in the pit? The wasteland is way too vast. * Crystal Hunting -- The old slisssh way was too much, BUT why does earning a useful amount of crystals have to take hours and hours? I am fairly certain there is more to life than spending it all killing imaginary beasties on a MOO (.. I'm not positive, but fairly certain) * Permakilling = the surest way to guarantee a MOO full of players not going IC outside of their tents. * Att bonus system = borderline ridiculous, but I've accepted it * Any change to the combat system will be and has always been 'unfair' to someone since they will have to work more or less than someone else to achieve the same results (9 times out of 10 this means I got screwed, but I've accepted that too) * Shotguns -- It's likely I won't win in a real battle, so I'll shoot you instead. Problem in rl, problem on GW. I don't know how to solve it, but I don't think 'kill em all! die die!' is the best approach for this MOO. That's why we have MUDs. * Removing combat system -- Yeah, that'll fix everything. Feh. The only semi-suggestion I have is that stat-loss at death could be lessened depending on your total_power. -------------------------- Message 7283 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Oct 6 17:25:05 1999 EDT From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Good grief. That's where the death paranoia comes from -- that it isn't the big guy that dies, its the little guy. So all the people who perceive that they might somehow be the little guy are damnably paranoid and spar like mad. No one wants to die, and lose not only gear but stats. It doesn't stop some people from killing. If it's the killing you want to stop, what about for each player someone kills, it adds to a random chance that the eagle will be offended and leave them permadead someday? Tiny chance, but still a chance. After all, the Eagle always wanted a vacation to Tahiti, or so I hear, and all these people dying would keep it busy. -------------------------- Message 7284 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Oct 6 17:38:16 1999 EDT From: Rathe (#14172) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re: Karma PKing is a good thing. After all, a human's size compared to a dragon's doesn't mean it'd be EASY for a dragon to just 'squash' them..more likely, the dragon would have trouble even attacking the person.. (Seeing as this may be long.) Coded Combat: My take on coded combat is that it is the skeleton of the character. If I have a character with high dexterity but low willpower, I tend to make this person rather gullible but at the same time nimble on her feet. It aids me in description as well as starting temperment. For this reason, I believe that stats are a good starting point for anyone to make a character. Especially in a post apocolyptic world like this where Darwin's theory of evolution is taken to a new level. Survival of the fittest indeed. Second, Coded combat provides a way to resolve conflicts. I know I groan when I see two idiots arguing over who hit who in the lounge and who missed etc, etc. Now, I'm not big on the coded system myself, I only have one character who has any kind of stats worth spitting at. I've always preferred straight RP, however, the characters who are weaker tend to band with stronger characters for survival. Purpose of the Coded Combat system: Well, besides what I stated above, there are people who like and embrace the coded combat system. They like hunting, they like purchasing 'toys' with their crystals, they like to progress in this manner and really, who the hell am I to tell anyone that's twinkish or stupid? It's not what I like, but why should anyone care what I think about it? I've attacked it in the past, but since I reached the age of reason, I've come to realize the world doesn't revolve around me. In the end, I think it's made me a better GM to come to terms with this. (Ask Heretic, we had some rounds on it years ago.) What I really wish now is that a few unnamed others would come to the mature realization that the world doesn't revolve around them either. -------------------------- Message 7290 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Oct 6 18:58:45 1999 EDT From: Vertemis (#23360) To: *Chat (#5391) *puts up 20d6 flame shield around Ep* -------------------------- Message 7291 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Oct 6 19:02:31 1999 EDT From: DragonBabe (#5288) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re: Dragon Stats I was told I should post this: --Generic Dragon---------------------------------------------------------------- Agility -> 59 ( 59) + 5 Injury: 0 Dexterity -> 73 ( 73) + 15 Insanity: 0 Endurance -> 100 ( 100) + 100 Fatigue: 0 Quickness -> 57 ( 57) + 5 Strength -> 110 ( 110) + 216 Upper Mobility: 100% Willpower -> 105 ( 105) + 166 Lower Mobility: 100% Sight -> 100 ( 100) Hearing -> 90 ( 90) Smell -> 80 ( 80) Melee -> 300 ( 300) + 326 Focus -> 100 ( 100) + 396 Unarmed -> 600 ( 600) + 428 Bite -> 550 ( 550) + 509 Armed -> 0 ( 0) + 165 Claw -> 550 ( 550) + 509 Shock -> 200 ( 200) + 380 Flail -> 350 ( 350) + 437 Medic -> 0 ( 0) + 151 Brawl -> 0 ( 0) + 268 Perception -> 100 ( 100) + 260 Throwing -> 0 ( 0) + 15 Ranged -> 0 ( 0) + 15 Shooting -> 0 ( 0) + 15 Lockpick -> 0 ( 0) + 20 Whip -> 0 ( 0) + 5 Dodge -> 50 ( 50) + 150 Javelin -> 0 ( 0) + 15 Bladed -> 0 ( 0) + 10 Trident -> 0 ( 0) + 5 Blunt -> 0 ( 0) + 216 Discus -> 0 ( 0) + 15 MechTech -> 0 ( 0) + 25 Archery -> 0 ( 0) + 15 ElecTech -> 0 ( 0) + 30 Sling -> 0 ( 0) + 15 ----------------------------------------------------------------Generic Dragon-- As you can see, stats were re-worked. If someone went into Morlith with a chainsaw and a rocket launcher, and a nice, large aircraft of some kind, blasted and cut the dragons to near death, loaded all them and their eggs into a said large aircraft, took them out of the Ghost Effect and killed them all there would be no dragons? In theory, I would think yes. Things permanently die "outside the Ghost Effect"... or at least that's what I've been lead to believe. In practice, HELL NO. Because then DB would be out of a job. And in response to Sterno's post, yes, that's exactly what I meant. I've never seen a single GM that does anything that isn't in his/her own interest. The fact that most of those things overlap into the players' interests is trivial and pointless in light of the general argument presented. If we were after fairness and game balance, there wouldn't be dragons at all. Or mechs for that matter. Or ... magic. If we were after listening to players' requests and following through on them, Bionics would have been coded years ago. And finally, Pounce, regardless of what DB wanted, you couldn't just haul all dragons outside the Eagle's influence. So I'll RP my happy little butt off, post to *tps and nobody can accuse me of whining on *chat. It feels good to just treat this place as a raw RP MOO. For me, it's what it's become. Hell, I don't even need crystal. To buy what? A special weapon? Pretty useless if I'm not in the combat system. Nah, I'll just make something from $thing at the rep and pose with it. I think it had a lot to do with clarifying my feelings and my decision. I went to the bitch session Karma ran around suppertime. I didn't get to hear all concerns because I had to eat dinner and go do laundry, but of the ones I heard there wasn't a single one that couldn't be dealt with by simply doing away with coded combat. Rathe even brought up the issue of GM ethics; characters and puppets set with artificially high stats, spawning crystal for friends, etc. etc. But if there were no coded combat there would be no bitch with GM ethics. A few of the code GMs might be without a job; no special weapons to make or classes or combat areas to run. But WTF, they don't do anything now, 99% of the time, so why bother? Even coded magic is about worthless. You can't hunt with spells. They're just kind of there for decoration. MUCH better to show your talent as a mage with raw RP. And not only that, Stalinger couldn't say squat about who boosted to what circle :) It would all depend on how good an RPer you were and whether the people you RPed with were willing to accept you in whatever role you want to play. Ever since I made the decision to just drop out of the combat system I feel like a weight has been lifted off of me that I didn't even know was there. No more worries about being sent to the Midrealm and losing stats/atts, no more competition to get high enough to keep from getting my ass KOed or killed. WTF do I care if I get killed now? Two minutes in the Midrealm, heal myself up and I'm back home in time for supper. Scratch that. I don't even think I would bother to heal. Well, that's my reasons (if anybody cares). Apparently, there are unspoken rules on this MOO. I hate unspoken rules. Rules you're expected to follow even though nobody told you. I'm a teenager, people, assume no common sense accordingly. I went on a killing spree in N'Orleans. Because the crocodile named Harimon had killed me once, he was on the list. His little friend attacked me too, so she got the same treatment. To very loosely quote Ed, "Bartenders are off limits. That stands to simple common sense." Firstly, I think I should be able to kill back ANYTHING that kills me, if I later gain the stats or the raw cojones to do so. Secondly, nobody told me that even though you can PK fifteen people in a day and you don't get anything worse than a hard IC stare from those you killed, you can't cack certain NPC's or you're hated OOCly. Thirdly, if they want people to NOT kill the fucker, they should make him more judicious in the way he attacks. (Or at LEAST not have two monsters in the garden that could be parsed from "nin"...) I've appologized, I've promised not to do it again, (yes, to two alts of Ed.... YOU"RE ALL ED!) and I've been toroughly puzzled about this. Why is it that on this MOO PKing is free and easy, but certain NPC's are "off limits" to kill? That seems a bit backwards to me. I mean, hell, they come back in sixty seconds anyway, what's the problem? You couldn't go to the bar down the street? I've already made all the appologies and promises that it would never happen again that I'm going to. This is a big appology/promise to everybody. I worked for an entire year to get my stats almost up to double average (most of them) and make the friends I have and get the items I have. I don't believe that taking that all away from me (or anyone) is conducive to RP. In fact, I would feel defeated by such a move. (And proceed to publicly tell whoever did said reset to suck my ass and @recycle both of my characters.) I was going to statreset one or both of them anyway. I wanted to @reroll and play a recomb kitten or baby lizard. But if it's FORCED, on every character on the MOO, I would have to protest. Reason why: Simple. As I've seen quoted several hundred times (possibly from Faust, but I'm not sure), "A guilded cage is still a cage." And to paraphraze said quote, a guilded reaper's scythe will still whack your character into tiny pieces of statless, itemless, IC friendless, useless trash. And to Tarla and Williker, who appear to be gagging me and won't see this, too bad. It's what you get for being whinebitches. *eyes that word again and decides to maybe go to bed...* -------------------------- Message 7374 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 10:05:46 1999 EDT From: Pounce (#24787) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: *whaps Tikiaido back* (Just ONE MORE THING...) Just now got to thinking of something. (*smiles at Rand and appologizes for previous hostility over @x [Public]* "No, I don't really hate you. I know it's dissapointing, but I don't even DISLIKE you.") To add to my argument (in my currently barely coherent way), I'd like to point out that if you do a statreset, you'll likely be saying GOODBYE to more seasoned players than you'll saying hello to newbies. I mean, think about it. "Come play Ghost Wheel. We just did a stat reset and reserve the right to fuck up an entire year of character developement at a whim!" I don't know about you, but if I'd never heard of the place and I heard that, I wouldn't come running unless I was particularly psychotic or intended only to powerhunt ahead of everyone statwise and PK the fuck out of things. Either way, you don't get new roleplayers, you get new carnival freaks who won't contribute SHIT to RP. (*realizes he just said "carnival freak" again, waving at Rathe and commenting dryly, "I DO hate you. I can prove that you're really Ed, faking his IP." *notes that he's been JOKING about the "everyone's Ed" thing for about two days now, hoping he kills it so it doesn't come back to haunt him*) I'd like to part with giving all of you who are seriously thinking of doing a statreset a bit of food for thought... What if someone came up to you IRL, mugged you, stole all your shit, "erased" you (all information about you, anywhere) and gave you a temporal lobotomy, reconnected everything so it worked again, sans your memory and all of your learned abilities? You have to learn to walk, talk, read, write, everything all over again. You have to make all your friends over again, and you have to find out who the HELL your biological parents are... (And really hope some sideshow doesn't lie to you about it...) You have to figure out what items would be useful to you, and how to use them, and how to get them ALL OVER AGAIN. Wouldn't you be pissed off at the person who did that to you? Now eye the situation and tell me if you'd be pissed off at someone who destroyed those things in your character. (Oh, wait, GM's can just reset/set their stats to anything they want and never RP as such without the aid of NPC's anyway, so what am I thinking?) You sense the blatant hostility? Good. Not slamming Bish, because he isn't the only one with this attitude that I've observed. But it's always been my contention that a GM/Wizard is supposed to be there for the playerbase in what amounts to a "customer service" position. Some wizards/GMs think their bit makes them a demigod and they can say/do anything with impunity and get away with it. I actually had an experience elseM** where I paged a wizard and her page echo was "This better be goddamn important because if it's not I WILL @toad." If code or building projects are taking up your time then @hide. General rudeness to the player base doesn't do anything but lose players. Truth is, guys, without the player base you're nothing, unless you get your jollies out of coding/building for yourselves. If that's the case try masturbation. it's essentially the same thing and a lot more fun. I know it can be mind numbing going over the same thing for the 4,000 time with a newbie. But that IS what you're here for. It goes with the bit. Oh, and on the subject of @hiding; I think ANY GM that runs a Player Class should NEVER be permitted to @hide. Again, if you're going to run a class you should be available to the members of your class. There are GMs here that run classes that I have NEVER seen unhidden. How is a newbie to know that there is anybody there to even apply to; to ask questions about the class, etc.? And once in the class, they NEVER see their class GM on. In fact they never even HEAR from them except to get their hand slapped when they do something wrong. This is running a class? As long as I'm airing my pet peeves there's one other. Again, this is not exclusive to this MOO. I've seen this happen elsewhere. It's GMs/wizards that very vocally and publically "retire" and give up their bits then anywhere from two weeks to 6 months later, with no announcement whatsoever, return with their bits. If somebody gives up a bit it should be permanent. It makes way for others who are deserving of being bitted and will offer more to the MOO then blowing hot and cold. I ran a MOO at one time and believe me, I had no qualms over debitting somebody and making it STICK. It gets pretty bad when you see somebody announce on *chat/*gen/*soc that they are "retiring" for the third time. Especially when you know that in two or three weeks they'll be right back. -------------------------- Message 7378 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 13:24:59 1999 EDT From: Yalindra (#13170) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: My 2 cents I'd just like to go on record seconding Karma's opinion of the uselessness of a stat reset. I think it would merely create more angst among the players, especially between those who lost tons of stats and those who were around average or below. Secondly, it would serve only to, as I believe someone else on this list put it, chase people away more than it would usher in new blood. I mean, why would people want to come over here and play if, after putting many hours into accumulating high stats to become a "badass", some people complained and then everything got set back to 0? I think everyone should explore different avenues before blaming the MOOs ills on the coded combat system and the roving bands of high-statted PKers (that I've personally never seen, but apparently according to certain strings of posts appear to be running around the MOO) disrupting RP to the poiont where everyone's too afraid of the "sparmonkey menace" to come out and play. I KNOW RP still exists - hell, I've even been in it recently - we just need more people to come out and play. Groups make RP. -------------------------- Message 7379 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 13:25:14 1999 EDT From: Devon (#23970) To: *Chat (#5391) Anyone know where I can get a cracked version of Adobe Photoshop? -------------------------- Message 7380 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 13:53:21 1999 EDT From: Jett (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: The other side of the coin. Agreed, Tirafal, at least on the following points. (Some of which I am guilty myself, others as far as I know I have yet to fall to.) GMs are here to serve the MOO, they should attempt to remain polite insofar as they are treated with respect. I have no qualms with GMs giving back what is given to them however. Why should I be polite to someone who's abusive to me? If this were a job I was paid to do, such as irl answering phone lines for a company, oh you bet I'd take the venom smile and like it, but here, I don't necessarily agree that GMs are punching bags. If you're polite with them, then by all means you should expect them to be polite to you as well. If you page verbal abuse and other trite comments, reap the whirlwind then. @hiding, I'm rarely @hidden, as anyone can see. I hide when I'm idle because I'm at work, or when I am working on something that requires my full attention at the moment. I do agree that GMs in charge of a specific class should be unhidden as often as possible, I do not agree that said GMs be always unhidden as they do have building and coding that needs completion at times and being @hidden is sometimes the best way to get it done the fastest. As for 'retiring', I know I've done this before. Sometimes a GM just needs one hell of a break. You get jaded fast and do things in haste. What I think you are forgetting, Merri, is that GMs are human just like you, and well, they make mistakes, just like you. Though I do compliment the general nature of the post, it was much more constructive then the blatant flames and baiting I've seen in the past. Thank you for airing your peeves. Perhaps other GMs will also add to my opinions. -------------------------- Message 7381 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 13:56:01 1999 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Getting Old Ya know it is funny... But I DO feel they should stay as unhidden as possible. As I said, I have been on this MOO for well over a year and to this day there are class GMs that I have yet to see unhidden. On the subject of rudeness, etc.; I don't disagree that if a player is abusive, rude or twinkie to a GM that they shouldn't get what they give. What I'm talking about is GENERAL rudeness to players on @tags, page echos, etc. It's disconcerting when a PC pages a GM/wizard and gets a page echo that in effect says "Go away, kid. You bother me." I can understand the need for a break. Sometimes working on a MOO is a pressure cooker. I've been there and I don't deny it. But it's my feeling that it would be a WHOLE lot better to post that you are going to be taking a break and unavailable for awhile (as Sterno and Stal did) then to announce you are giving up your bit. If a bit was unretrievable after being given up it would make people think twice before doing it. -------------------------- Message 7383 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 14:21:24 1999 EDT From: Jett (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Ok... Does that mean I want to exploit everyone and seek personal glory at the expense of everyone around me? No. It's a -joke-. It's text on a pin I had from high school. Sue me for copyright infringement, but don't read too far into it or you'll get the wrong idea, not to mention you'll be making a mountain out of a molehill and wasting a phenomenal amount of your time and mine. @hiding: This is why I, personally, tell everyone to @mail me info. That's why I made the point of including `constructive complaints only, no bitching' in that shout-invite. Merri: Knock it the fuck off. Anyone and everyone can see that `Not slamming Bish' is just a token means of not letting the newer players, or those sane enough to avoid *chat, think you didn't mean to attack him personally. I know damned well that the two of you had your own personal little flame war quite recently in which you accused him, specifically, of ruining the MOO singlehandedly. Bish voluntarily gave up his position because 1. he had no time, and 2. he wasn't sure what he could contribute at that time. He came back during the meeting in hopes that he would be able to -help- somehow with the problems we're all facing. Who else has `that attitude'? People on other M*s? People here? I don't think your negative experiences on other M*s should send volleys of bullshit onto the GMs here. You've alienated almost every single one of the GMs here in one way or another, you realize. So, by your own words then, why should they want to have anything to do with you? Because it's our job to do it, and that leaves you on the level with everyone else -- your problems get handled, your requests get processed, and we all move on to handle someone else's problems and requests. Who is `the more deserving candidate'? You? You've said you want a bit here, and were told that so long as you kept up these quests to damn everyone around you there was no way you were going to get one. Take the hint already. You've gone blatantly after DB, Rathe, Rand, Ep, Bish for `horrible breaches of conduct', and I can't help but point out that -every- -one- -of- -these- -people- you have either known IRL, or had player-level flame wars with on the MOO. Ones -you- started, Merri. Now you can add me to the list -- the little digs of late I sent you private mail about, and rec'd no response. I thought, perhaps, you might be sensible enough to think, `Oh, gee, I didn't realize it could have been taken that way, I didn't mean to be offensive,' but you -didn't-, and have had ample opportunity to do so. Soo... it's obvious to me that you -did- intend offense. And, that being the case, welcome to having yet another person who refuses to listen to your petty, self-centered, wholly ridiculous rants, and the grand quests you go on blowing everything out of proportion and using info from -everywhere- to make people here look bad for the most insignificant things -- like a tag message, for fuck's sake. God forbid your personal feelings aren't in the spotlight, oh empress of `misinterpretation'. Some of the things you mention have value to everyone, or are valid points, but others are personal attacks hidden under points dragged in from elseM* experiences in attempt to make people you dislike look bad, and it's patently pathetic, because one does -not- excuse the other. I think we should have a tp where Rathe ends up naked and all the girls are chasing him about.. Yeah thats it.. Would be fun... Of course I'd have to save him and then we'd be best friends.. And I'd have to handle the hords of females for him too.. Because of this I realize now that running a moo is not all happy and fluffy. It is a lot of hard work and frustrating at times, especially when you are trying to hack code and a player keeps paging asking for things, like porting their bag back, or toys back...or asking for some huge castle when they just joined the moo yesterday. I'm not saying this to discount any players or their requests, just trying to make a point. Sometimes just for a bit of sanity you have to hide and try to get the work done. Most times players will ask another player, or send mail if a wiz is not available. If you have truly ran a moo, then you should know this and try to understand that most the GM's are busy, or maybe even away from their keyboard. I know from experience if you send mail, or a page to a GM, they usually get back to you in a reasonable bit of time. As far as GM's not available or active with in the class, hell, Smoke has no class but I still seem to have a great time every time I come out to rp. I don't really think it is up to the GM's to make a wonderful rp session, but more the players involved. Sometimes I wonder if you are just extremely bored or just enjoy blasting people on the moo. Maybe you should spend more time playing and enjoying the moo, you might find it is a bit more fun the dragging other people through the mud. :) -------------------------- Message 7391 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 15:20:30 1999 EDT From: Akeashar (#20348) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: GMs, Hiding, Classes, et all. Well, seeing as how I essentially run a class, and have another previously before handing it over, I'd just like to say this: You're sitting there trying to debug a say.. 100 line verb in which one of the )'s has messed up, for example, and you're unhidden. Someone pages you, another person pages you, etc.. you soon get annoyed as you have lost the code on scrollback, and you now have to re-read 100 lines :P I'm not saying I ignore people, heavens no, but If people will leave me a message via page or moomail, I most certainly will get back to them. And I usually hide my alts so If for some reason I don't have Akea on, I won't get spammed by Newbies asking my alt for help :P sometimes we, the gm staff, just needs to chill out, socialize a little perhaps, or speak in private about official matters.. I'm also on the public channel, so usually if I am talking on there, you can page me, leave me a mail, etc.. there's always *request as well, for matters involving sheets, itemry, etc. With that said, if anyone has a problem with myself hiding, take it up with me or Quinn, since he made the code for it :) I'm gonna go about my business as usual to try and help ya'll out. Witness. etc :P -------------------------- Message 7394 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 16:07:19 1999 EDT From: Silencer (#24923) To: *Chat (#5391) and *ideas (#504) Subject: a good idea We need to address something that is singehandedly ruining our moo as we know it. Before I say this, I would like to make a statement: Under no circumstances should anybody be kicked off a MU* simply because people say he/she should be. Because then that would be obvious favoring and people holding a popularity contest of who has the most friends. That aside, I must contradict myself by saying the following: We must @newt/@toad Tirafal/Merridwen. I may not be the one to pass judgement on somebody, but this has gone too far. Sure, there may be plenty of people who bitch and moan on this MOO, but none as prevalently annoying as Tirafal and her alt. People say this MOO is dead and has no RP, but a big problem is right here: we're too busy dealing with the problems and complaints, especially of the one noted. Everytime I connect, and I'm sure others feel the same, and I can't wait to make another round to the R/T Lounge or at least go hunt, I see a message, such as :164 messages on *chat. It makes me sour to read through almost all of them being Tirafal-spawned. I have searched most of her posts for some sort of sense or intelligent, non-hurtful opinion, but have found none. Simply put, she's ruining this MOO, not any GM. It's one thing to have a kindly suggestion to *ideas or chat and read through it, but it's quite another to read several complaints and quite, well, retarded analyzations of taglines, as an example. It makes me want to type @quit, and hit my computer with large blunt objects. And yet I haven't left, and neither have alot of people. Some may interpret this as 'well, she's not a big enough problem," but perhaps some people really _do_ enjoy what they do on this MOO, and may even expand to RPing and whatnot, that is, if a certain person is cleared out. It would be one if it was somebody like Dagger, who just kind of floated by after a month, but we've had to put up with this crap for way too long. I hate to single out Tirafal, but truly, this has gone out for too long. I don't believe there's a soul on this MOO who would side with her, and she's turned into just another mere problem. Maybe this if for Quinn especially, but there's abuse on the Moo which you can get @jailed for, but it shouldn't be limited to calling somebody a dirty uncle-fucker on the public channel repeatedly. It should be when somebody is no longer voicing their opinion, or, if they are, they are doing it in an inappropriate manner. So, I would kindly ask for a petition, and for everybody to type the following message: @my tag is @toad/newt Tirafal/Merridwen NOW! Thank you, that is all. -------------------------- Message 7395 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 16:20:30 1999 EDT From: Sterno (#21938) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: On an unrelated topic I hate crossposts. -------------------------- Message 7397 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 10 18:10:58 1999 EDT From: Silencer (#24923) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: out of pure amusement, because I can I can't believe Bishamon's tags. We found the cats had chased paper wrappers into the toilet, from playing with the paper and the water. When we plunged to make sure all the paper was out, salamanders came swimming up, due to a break in the line. My first love is getting married this weekend, which is the convention I've been preparing for for months with work -- he leaves on his honeymoon on Monday, also coincidentally my birthday. The first night of the convention is being celebrated with a pajama party. Many, many, many past-middle-age women in mumus and bunny slippers -- as a tribute to Hollywood's 50's era, by some logic I can't comprehend. There may well be one genuine starlet there, in fact, as Rhonda Shear of USA Up-All-Night fame is now a writer for collector's magazines and has started her own line of dolls. Brian, who will be going with me, has had a crush on her since he was very young -- and everyone will be in flimsy nightwear. I think I'm going to make him wear a cup. This is why I take very little seriously in life. It's damned funny, in the end. I sure as hell can't take any of these things seriously. *grin* Suffice to say, after this weekend, I should be back and a bit more able to help with things in general, once all of the convention lunacy is over. .though, all told, I think the salamanders were the strangest thing that happened this week. -me. -------------------------- Message 7446 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Oct 14 22:14:24 1999 EDT From: Akeashar (#20348) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: For those interested in WoT Here's a review of the new WoT game, which I believed was helped by none other than the man himself.. If you have any requests or matters that for some reason I'm the only person who can handle them, well, they'll have to wait until Tuesday morning. If Tiki wants to @recycle himself, let him. I for one am not impressed to see someone blatantly screaming for attention. 'Oh poor me' is overdone. You get what you give, if Tiki is so afraid of people hating him, perhaps he should step back and wonder why people 'hate' him. (I for one do not hate him, I just find him dreadfully loathsome at times.) Maybe if he tries to rectify the behavior that causes so many people to be annoyed by him, well, people won't be so annoyed anymore. But, that's just my opinion. I don't care if he recycles or doesn't. It's not really a decision we can make for him, as what he wants to see are gaggles of people suddenly rallying to his side to coo and stroke his ego. I don't accept the excuse of 'I have low self esteem'. Been there, done that myself. It doesn't justify or somehow give you the right to be an ass and treat others like crap. -------------------------- Message 7460 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Oct 15 08:33:37 1999 EDT From: Tikiaido (#24781) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Eleven To quote Rathe: "People here are jaded. And I guess if I get it or not depends highly on just how jaded you people are and just how much you really believe that I'm just whining. If I say I'm not, the one who ARE jaded whinebitches will simply disbelieve me, and think I'm just trying harder fo attention. Those of you who think that can suck my ass. I'd like it if they didn't take away from other peoples' experiences while they're here, but if anything, `not deliberately making others miserable OOCly' is the only real contribution anyone should ever feel an obligation to make. That's just my opinion, though. Still, I can't make up anyone's minds for them -- and I'm not saying Tiki has/hasn't contributed, or has/hasn't detracted. I don't know him well enough to have an opinion about Tiki in particular. I do know, though, that a player's `job' is to come and have fun. So if it isn't fun, and you can't think of a way to make it fun, it might be better to start with a fresh concept to try again. .and if I see one more sequin, bead, or feather tonight, I'm going to go find a nice clocktower and start picking off anyone that isn't wearing 1950s pajamas. The following was given me a while back when life seemed to be kicking me in the teeth. Rules for Being Human 1) You will receive a body. You may hate it or like it, but it will yours for the entire period this time around. 2) You will learn lessons. You enrolled in a full-time, informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have opportunities to learn lessons. You may like the lessons, or think them irrelevant, or stupid. 3) There are no mistakes, only Lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The failed experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately 'works'. 4) A lesson is repeated until learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson. 5) Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned. 6) 'There' is no better than 'Here'. When you are 'there' has become a 'here' you will simply obtain another 'there' that will again look better than 'here'. 7) Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself. 8) What you make of life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours. 9) Your answers are inside you. The answers to life's questions lie inside you. All you need do is to look, listen and trust. 10) You will forget all this. -------------------------- Message 7493 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Oct 23 03:37:08 1999 EDT From: Clayson (#17237) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: My Answer Lessons are only for the unimaginative, if I liked the item I would keep it, if not, I would turn it in. For PC's you usually use DHCP to auto assign IP addy's, but DHCP for Mac seems to be asking for a gateway. -------------------------- Message 7513 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Oct 27 23:27:10 1999 EDT From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Ed figured out the MAC problem on his own, thanks for the help. He just needs to learn that when you open a program, the toolbar on the top of the screen gives all the options of the program. -------------------------- Message 7514 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Oct 28 01:27:36 1999 EDT From: Karcass (#6537) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Me I'm going to jail irl, can I get outta jail here before my sentence starts on December 13th? -------------------------- Message 7515 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Oct 28 10:35:48 1999 EDT From: Negative-Linus (#24942) To: *Chat (#5391) Better bring the KY, big-guy. -------------------------- Message 7516 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Oct 28 15:50:44 1999 EDT From: Smoke (#12541) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Karcass I think Karcass should be let out of jail, mm....or better yet, let Smoke play warden for a day :) The things she could do with the leather handle of a whip.
