Just dropping a note to all to let everyone know part of why I've been a bit more absent of late. The computer fully expired, and we had to pick up a new one. I've been struggling to get everything set up on the new system while dealing with home repairs and the ever-present trauma that is my home business. Suffice to say, having to drop $4k on a new system leaves us without a dime to our names on this end, and while we -wanted- to get a new system, we didn't expect to -have- to until we were financially able to. Looks like unless there's a miracle in the near future, we're stuck here in DE and unable to make the bash in the coming weeks. This is really, -really- aggravating to Bri and I, since we're the poster children for `in need of a vacation'. Love you all, and I hope to be back among the unidle and connected sometime in the near future. -Dee/Spiral/etc. -------------------------- Message 6721 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Aug 6 18:57:21 1999 EDT From: Eponine (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: You know what's nice? Living in Lawrence, I forget sometimes that I'm in the Bible Belt. This place is a veritable oasis from the bigotry, hatred, hypocritical rhetoric and posturing by many of the fundamentalist and other way too serious minded Christians. (By no means do I lump all Christians under one umbrella either, so don't go there.) They attempted to have Evolution replaced by Creationism, and when they found out it was against federal seperation of church and state laws, they drafted up this new one instead, taking evolution out. The press pundits are saying this is taking Kansas back to the Dark Ages, so now I wonder if Witch burnings are going to come back into style too. -------------------------- Message 6733 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Aug 12 21:32:41 1999 EDT From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: A Day in the life of Me. However, under the 8th Amendment (in the BIll of Rights, a constitutional document) there is an established precedent forbidding 'cruel & unusal punishment'. The First Amendment reads as follows: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. " [that may have formatted srange.. sorry] There is a constitutional precedent which helps to establish this as the foundation of what's commonly called "separation of church and state", and what's Ep's talking about in Kansas could probably be made into a fair case for governmental establishment of a religious belief -- seeing as Creationism by its very nature relies on the existence of -a- God, and (in Kansas esp.) more likely than not, a Christian God. If this were seen legally as the case, it would be rather explicitly unconstitutional. Then again, I'm just an English major, so what the pants do I know about Constitutional Law? -Jess -------------------------- Message 6737 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Aug 15 23:15:32 1999 EDT From: Eponine (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Wherever it may come from, be it the bill of rights or the Constitution itself, we are guarenteed a seperation of Church and state. The Kansas Board of Education has used this forum to push their own political agenda, and our children will suffer for it. They may want our children to be backwater, but the rest of the nation will not be going by Kansas standards, leaving Kansas children with the chance to score lower on national exams thanks to parts of science being 'removed'. -------------------------- Message 6738 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Aug 16 22:45:19 1999 EDT From: Flux (#24842) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Evolution I never actually learned it in school, and it had nothing to do with religious reasons. It's not really a subject you need to spend more than 20 minutes on unless you're dedicating your life to it I really think the children of Kansas will be okay (well, if they're fucked up, THIS won't be the reason, anyway). If they want the theory of evolution, they can watch just about any show related to science on TV, and within a year they'll be bound to have learned it. Hell, they can watch the X-files and they'll be all set. -------------------------- Message 6739 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Aug 17 03:02:13 1999 EDT From: Eponine (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) It's not just the Evolution part of it, Flux. There's a political underseam to everything. The first proposal was that Creationism (Christian Creationism as according to Genesis in the Bible) be taught in schools alongside Evolution. This had to be turned down because the Supreme Court eons ago had made a ruling that it was illegal to teach Creationism in public schools, due to seperation of Church and state. So, they all got together again (three non science people, or Creation Scientists, same thing either way), and wrote up a new proposal, which I have read front to back. There is Creationist ideals, rhetoric and jargon throughout the the new standards, they're just VERY sneaky and careful about how they word things. (Such things as a disclaimer they want taught to students that Carbon dating is totally unreliable, which is one of the arguments Creationists use to downplay any kind of revelence evolution has.) At the same time, evolution isn't just about cromagnon man anymore, I've been watching the arguments fly and honestly, I am beginning to see how wide of a scope it's taken, moving into other sciences, and even into technology today. So, sorry, Flux, I don't agree that it's not that important anymore. -------------------------- Message 6740 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Aug 17 11:58:28 1999 EDT From: Zykk (#21824) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Umm... I may not be the brightest among us here at GW, and I know that religion is always trying to get everything according to it's own standards, but how could carbon dating not be reliable? I mean come on, no religion is going to change molecular deterioration, no matter how hard they try. As to Kansas not teaching the theory of evolution in public schools, I agree with Flux, there are hundreds of ways those 'poor kids' will find out about it. The schools have libraries, don't they? (Just my loose change...) -------------------------- Message 6741 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Aug 17 13:20:01 1999 EDT From: Flux (#24842) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Evolution I'm not arguing that there isn't more to evolution than the 20 minutes you can pick up on TV. I'm just saying most schools don't teach more than that in the first place. In depth evolution study is really more of a college-course type thing. -------------------------- Message 6742 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Aug 17 14:13:29 1999 EDT From: Mikishi (#24590) To: *Chat (#5391) Having kids learning about only -one- point of view (in this case, Creationism) can cause some to be more narrow-minded to other ideas (evolution) in the future. Sure, you could always look Darwin up in the library, but they may be hesitant about the new idea. I pity these three Creation scientists; they appear to be overzealous about defending their religion's ideas, and hoping to make more followers of Creationism in the future. -------------------------- Message 6743 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Aug 17 15:24:52 1999 EDT From: Oberon (#22725) To: *Chat (#5391) Why do you pity them? The lobbyists/etc. wanted it. I can see pitying the people involved, hell yes. Beyond that... this is definately a precedent. That's a bad thing, because yes, you may be able to learn the basics of evolution in a handful of hours, but what's to be next? People seem very against banning books from school libraries and curriculums, and I see this as being very similar. What if the history courses are next? What parts of unpopular history among Faith X would vanish, or be altered? Sure, it's an alarmist position, but everything in this country is done because of precedent. If no one successfully challenges the precedent, then the precedent allows for further censorship or religious-based interest groups to dominate the future education of not just the students in Kansas, but -anywhere- in the country. States use one another's laws, codes, etc. constantly to create new laws/etc. in their own state. Just food for thought. -------------------------- Message 6746 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Aug 17 17:04:09 1999 EDT From: Vertemis (#23360) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: $$ some odd posts I'm a physics major, and I happen to believe in evolution, however, Flux is right, evolution is a huge topics that can't be covered descentely in highschool anyway. Even though I believe in evolution, I'll have to admit, there's alot more sense in Creationism then in Evolution, but I don't want to spam the lists with scientific facts and bore half the MOO. If what they did is breaking some sort of law, I'm sure it will end up going to the Supreme Court for a ruling. If not, you have to just smile, nod, and elect some better officials. I've noticed that for about a month now...small pockets of lag that last for a minute or two. Of course, it's been no more than a minor nuisance to me because I don't take any of my characters out where they can easily die and also because everyone knows I like to sit on my lazy ass most of the day, occasionally chatting to the odd person. In regards to the checkpoints, yes they are longer but the shortest checkpoint I've seen on this MOO in recent memory was about 10 minutes. If you can sit through 10, 15 isn't really much of a difference. I find it easier to just go OOC and do something else on your computer and the time will fly by. Simple, eh? Of course, it's _too_ easy. I had a point, but it's gone now. -------------------------- Message 6792 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Aug 25 10:35:48 1999 EDT From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Red Quinn's 'old areas' I'm aware that theres certain ancient GM's that many started on their own areas, but were left unfinished. She is stable for the time being, however the cardiologist has said the next 24 to 48 hours are the most critical. If she survives the next 48 hours she will live. However, if she lives she will have a permanently damaged heart. She will not be able to smoke, she will never again be able to do anything strenuous and there is a possibility she will be oxygen dependent. I'm very afraid for her. I don't want her to die. Neither do I want her to live the life of a cripple. My heart is breaking. All I know to do is to be there. Her husband is devastated. They have two small children; a boy, 4 years old, and a girl, 2. He is still in shock. To add to this tragedy there is no insurance on my daughter. Her husband is a registered Seminole and receives his healthcare through the BIA. Both of their children are also tribe registered and have health care provided as well. My daughter was the only member of the family without coverage and as ill as she is, she is FRETTING over the possible astronomical bill. If anybody is interested, I will check in occassionally and post updates. -------------------------- Message 6802 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Aug 29 00:48:45 1999 EDT From: Tirafal (#24173) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Update on my daughter She is marginally better at this point but the fact that she has improved at all is a good thing in itself. She's still not out of the woods yet, though. She is still coughing up blood that's coming off of her heart and seeping into her lungs and if her hemoglobin drops they will have to transfuse her. For those of you that understand those things, her heart rate is running at between 140-150, her BP is running in the 90/50 range and her o2 sats are running at 97% on 2L of oxygen. How ever, I saw her take her mask off to cough and watched her sat drop to 81% in less then a minute. I think I know too much sometimes :( But she's hanging in there and she's fighting hard. Visitors have been limited to her husband, myself and Denali. Her husband is staying in the room with her. We've been limited to 15 minute visits. We're home now but her husband has out phone and pager #'s and can get ahold of us quickly if we're needed. Fortunately, we live mere blocks from the hospital. Unfortuanately, due to our financial situation I HAVE to work tomorrow and it's a 12 hour shift :( However, they have all the phone #'s and if I have to, I will leave work. After that I'm off for 2 days and can devote my attention to things with no problem. I'll continue to keep the MOO posted. On the other side of the coin, take single parents... take WORKING PARENTS of any kind, who're trying to make a living in a world where inflation, social security balooning, and gods know what other factors are absolutely and staunchly against them.... You try jugglin' three jobs, housework and general maintainance and see if you gotta lotta family time left over.... Upon contacting the telephone company we were informed that by pushing 90# you end up giving the individual that called you access to your telephone line and allows them to place a long distance telephone call, with the charge appearing on your telephone bill. We were further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have verified with UCB Telecomm. that this actually happens. I called GTE Security this morning and verified that this is definitely possible and DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. It will give them access to your phone line to make long distances calls ANYWHERE!!!!
