But Dakirion would be pretty annoyed, realizing that over 70% of their recombs are loose. It seems a bit odd that new players want to keep playing it. So what this post is is part rant and part discussion to encourage players to not always play free recombs. First crystals, all recombs should be paid for the most part, these go in your pocket. Skarr for example costs 250 crystals per month, or 5000 to buy him permanently. Yes for those who didn't know he's my alt. Anyway thats just the first part and you keep it. Why owned? Well again you get to more then likely choose your owner, so it's really not that bad with the evil master etc. Unless you want one that is. Second you get a home, someone to talk to, and someone you know you can always trust to keep your back in case of a fight. In otherwords being a recomb isn't all that bad. Now the obvious complaints, whine but I have no free will, thats not true you have free will but you serve your master. WHile you can make your own decisions the master makes the final ones. Yeah there are trade offs, but your not a big dumb idiot unless again you want to play one. So I think being owned really isn't that bad. Just give it some thought, otherwise I'm sure Dak hunters may actually track you down and beat you silly. ;) -------------------------- Message 6141 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Mar 11 14:10:58 1999 EST From: Quinn (#2) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: RECOMB RIGHTS It would be interesting to consider the IC times we live in as akin to the 60's civil rights movement. Perhaps recombs are petitioning for free will, or just plain defying their masters. Mainstream society may consider them free as a matter of fact, while city/dome dwellers would still regard them as chattal, somewhat as the South regarded slaves after the Civil War. Because there is no central government, recombs generally _are_ free if they manage to escape the bounds of a furry-slaver kingdom. Dante's suggestions are nonetheless valuable, as recombs BRED TO SERVE would find it difficult to adjust to "freedom" and likely be, at the least, severely needy, dependant individuals. -------------------------- Message 6142 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Mar 11 14:11:53 1999 EST From: Dexter (#14882) To: *Chat (#5391) Auction Skarr on Ebay. -------------------------- Message 6143 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Mar 11 20:01:35 1999 EST From: Clayson (#17237) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Boostometer Whats this? -------------------------- Message 6144 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Mar 11 20:03:50 1999 EST From: Pounce (#24787) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: RE: Boostometer >From the name, it could be surmised that it monitors how fast you boost, or how long untill you can boost again. We just got the dish linkup installed, complete with the splitter, etc. In my living room, as I was cleaning my little heart out, I was watching `Contact' (which you must see if you haven't seen it already.) Upstairs, in my parents house, my father turned on the playboy channel. In the middle of an endearing scene, where the hero and heroine are bonding in what has come to be one of my favorite films... .it cut suddenly to a couple bumping and grinding to their hearts' content. I am not joking. I then flipped to the directory listing, and started to scroll up. The listing fought me, and tried to scroll down. I was convinced that the machine was possessed, and that the dish network refused to allow me to watch Contact, dammit. Like I'd seen it enough times for one human being and was no longer allowed to watch it or something equally ridiculous. (It had gone all quirky earlier when the movie was on, too.) The phone rings. Dad: What are you watching? Me: Contact, dammit, though apparently the machine doesn't want me to. Dad: Uhmm.... I'm watching it too. NOW, anyway. Me: Uhmm... type in the channel you were watching. Dad apparently types it in. The screen changes to some couple arguing... that wasn't what he was watching before, but we won't tell, eh? *cough* Me: Shit. Dad: Shit. Pause. Dad: Erm. I'll call them again. The moral of the story: Satellite dishes are effil. They make you clean an entire floor of your house and then don't even let you watch what you wanted to see in the first place. What really happened: Apparently, somehow, the recievers were set to something that was the same, and both remotes were switching -BOTH- TVs. What I really want to know: _-=*HOW*=-_ can it be that if someone is standing 3 feet away from where the remote beam needs to go to change the channel, or a single sheet of paper disrupts the beam, you can click all day long and nothing happens -- but when 2 brick and plaster walls and 30 feet of empty space between house divide the boxes controlled, a remote can penetrate solid adamantium?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Okay, NOW I'm just whining, but seriously, how much fun is it to RP when there's the constant threat of some idiot with an evil sword busting in and killing everybody in the room for some reason beyond the fathom of sanity? I guess it's obvious I've been PKed a couple times and don't like the idea, eh? Indeed, on the subject of PKing, I've never liked it. This isn't my first MOO, not my first online game, not my first character ON this game, and if I had to count up all the good weapons, gold pieces, crystals, stats, etc. I've lost from being PKed, you'd likely be amazed. On the subject of crystals hunters, what good is a class with no stat advantage, and the only RP advantage is, "Yes, my son, I hunt crystals for a living and I keep the GhostWheel safe from predators!" You're a person in a messed up, backward, post-nuclear-war far future, where the world's gone to hell, not a super hero. -------------------------- Message 6183 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 14 06:58:28 1999 EST From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) First off, they really didn't get rid of the class 'Crystal Hunter' only they are saying now that as a starting player you are at the basic class advantage which is equivallent to the 'Crystal Hunter'... This means you don't have to spend points on it.. It is given.. You can still hunt and be the savior of the ghostwheel and keep your history.. You just can do it without spending 20 points and declairing it.. It is a given.. A starting point.. What DB's original post was for is that they are simplifiying things.. There is no point in having a class called 'Crystal Hunter' when everyone basicly hunts crystals.. Though in the starting game you do start with this class advantage as a given or free advantage you do not have to declair it on your sheet.. This saves dataspace and an explanation for something which everyone basicly starts at.. So, by saying there is no longer a class called 'Crystal Hunter' does not mean you are gonna loose anything at all.. You just gain 20 points to spend on something else.. You are still the same character you always where.. So don't worry about it.. I've never declaired a class with Red, I tried Dragonrider at one time and left before the bonding.. Am I a dragonrider?? No, I'm a crystal hunter.. A warrior of the wasteland.. I hunt for crystals.. But I'm not gonna let the lack of a class spoil my day.. There are other things that can do that.. So, relax and be happy.. My interest was in making character creation less complicated, and one way of doing that is to nix the idea of paying for classes with no benefits. In its place, it might be fun to add a welfare system whereby newbies get a certain amount of crystals their first month here, and 10% less each additional month. I hate to force them to waste 20 character points just to get some extra stuff at startup which they're likely to use or lose quickly anyway. I'd never used it myself, and was only made away of it today. Perhaps the purple cries of "NUDITY @WHO" confused access to my immediate knowledge of everything which exists within the database. This verb simply displays, amongst about a dozen other informational bits, whether or not someone is wearing armour. It displays no nudity messages. Nudity messages are not directly accessible by staff members. I did find a way for a particularly wiley programmer to remotely access a naked person's description, including their nudity. This would require faking the `player' variable, which would probably involve hacking a verb such as :receive_page on themselves to recognize when you are the player and then grab your :clothed_description. Such an action, if discovered, would result in @toading. If I find out definitely that anyone on staff is abusing their power to get some cheap jollies, they're OUT. Anyway, I added a `@privacy-option +paranude' which displays a message to your character if your :clothed_description rolled in some nudity. God knows how many ticks added to the verb, and at least a half hour of my time which could have been spent doing something fun for the MOO. Finally, I've asked the owner of the @who verb in question to remove the column with the binary armour flag. I suggest any other GM who happens to have such a verb which might possibly indicate someone is not wearing all of their clothing to remove it, so as not to unduly sully the good name of the Ghostwheel staff. Just for the record: the OXFORD DICTIONARY OF CURRENT ENGLISH is widely regarded as the most comprehensive compendium of English vocabulary. In the OED, 'armor' is listed as the US variant of the word 'armour' - both spellings are acceptable English spellings, currently in use, and the spelling itself seems to be a matter of dialect, locality, or personal preference. Also, since I'm discussing it, I'd highly recommend investing in a truly good dictionary if you're going to quibble with people about spelling, especially in an environment like this one (where typos run rampant anyway). Using MS Word as your basis for knowledge of what's correct and/or proper in the English language - either for spelling or grammar - is a very, very bad idea. MS Word is suited wonderfully for picking up typos, but for any kind of complex word/sentence, it's useless. The print medium, most especially the dictionary market, is far from dead. I have never said that any GM can see naked messages. The only person on this MOO with a wizbit is Quinn. The GMs have no more then progbits. They cannot see your nudity messages. I know this if for no other reason then I hold progbits on MOO's that have Quinn's PC. If you @exam a character all it returns is the base description. If you @dump a character the nudity messages are returned as E_PERMed. That means the only person that can read them is somebody with a wizbit. And on this MOO that means Quinn. 2. If more then one FO has the @@who verb, if somebody attempts to invoke it they will get an ambiguous match message. Keep trying, DB. You'll get there. Show us you know what to do with a progbit. 3. Although there are aspects about monitoring that bother me, it's a fact of life on this MOO and CAN only be done under certain circumstances and with an AHaB. I also believe it IS a right and responsibility of the GMs to do it. There is a purpose for it in game play. BUT, I also believe that anybody given a puppet should be throughly warned that even inadvertently, it can show things they may not want seen. They should be taught how to sleep the puppet for their privacy and how to @sweep. In this case it IS just as much the Player's responsibility to maintain their privacy as it is the MOO's. And if they get caught in a private moment, they have no one to blame but themselves. They've been told. 4. The @@who verb does exist. And it does just as exactly as I stated it does. It doesn't show nude messages, it doesn't monitor, it returns a simple yes or no on whether someone is naked. It also tells location and it tells who you're with and whether or not THEY are naked. It also gives this information at anytime. And, as I said, don't think if a GM sees you in a romm naked with another person that assumptions aren't made about what you're doing. That, IMO, is going a bit far. -------------------------- Message 6252 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 14:50:28 1999 EST From: Pounce (#24787) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re: Nudity I don't know if you knew this or not, but there are a MILLION ways for a semi-cyberconscious player to monitor you while you do your little flings too. I mean heck, a simple IP trace and a watch bug of any kind and they can see what's going on on your computer screen. And if they're good, they don't get caught. So basically, as I've said before, you can't do anything on the internet without being watched. And your little MOOsex sessions aren't the least of it. You can be watched when you're doing anything, even local operations, if someone has even a low-grade watching or trojan horse program on you. And if someone is worth their salt at it, they can hide it good enough that they don't get caught. Sorta like bury the evidence and then bury the shovel. So, even when you're sitting there typing email or something, someone could be watching you. So why worry about privacy when it can be take away at the whim of any hacker that's worth a shit, eh? In essence, the internet is a world-wide connection, and anyone in the world could be watching you at any time. So you basically have no privacy, on this moo, or in anything else you do, so don't even worry about it. -------------------------- Message 6253 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 16:01:36 1999 EST From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Nudity Can we say parinoid? First of all, I've been told that Dakiron is a corporation, and Recombs are specially ordered by wealthy people. Well, that's all good and well, but it brings up some interesting arguments. Say I build custom cars. Now, I know a car isn't the same as a living, breathing recomb, I'm not daffed here, but I'm using it as an example. I build the car, I get the money for it, and I send it to the owner. If the person dies, I don't go looking for the car to resell it. If the car is stolen (recomb runs away) it's not my responsibility to go get it back for the owner. If the owner totals the car (kills the recomb) I'm not obligated to giv them anther one, or even give a damn about it. And if the car never makes it to the owner (is stolen off a car transport or something, recomb runs from Dakiron), as long as I've got my money from the owner, again, I don't give a damn. If you look at it from a business standpoint, and I have been told by many sources that Dakiron IS a business.... There should be no recomb hunters at all. A business doesn't make money by going around and trying to recover people's lost goods for theim. And any business that doesn't make money quickly ceases to be a business. Looking at it from a playability standpoint, people like their freedom. I mean, damn, a race isn't fun to play if there are more downfalls than benefits, and being hunted and prodded and needled all the time is one helluva downfall. This is just an oppinion on the matter, and an attempt to TRY to bring some light to a subject that has been bothering me. I'd love to hear other oppinions, even opposing oppinions. They probably charge to 'recover' lost goods. And that would be a business venture, hence potentially profitable, hence the reason for recomb hunters. Also, they have to weight the cost of retrieving strays versus creating another whole recomb. Since you could program a recomb to do such work for peanuts, why not? -------------------------- Message 6257 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 21:29:38 1999 EST From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Recombs And how would it look if 80% or recombs you create are rogue and masterless. What would posess them to even care? I mean, they have orders to fill, and life doesn't cease just because one little recomb runs away, or the master dies. Think about it. They pay the scientists probably hefty sums for the research, but after that, one scientist can mix genes all day, and come up with probably twenty viable recomb embryos. Why would they recapture when they could just make more, and probably make more money in the long run? (and besides, if they only sell for 5000 crystals after a recap, I mean, think about it, just equipment alone on the recapture costs 5000 crystals, not to mention hiring the people, etcettera.) -------------------------- Message 6259 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 21:37:18 1999 EST From: Rathe (#14172) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re: Nudity I'M READING YOUR NUDIE MESSAGES ha ha ha -------------------------- Message 6260 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 21:38:56 1999 EST From: Durandal (#23874) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re Add to the "little" cost of creating a recomb the costs of initial conditioning, feeding, and raising the thing to it's "adult" stage, and you probably have paid nearly as much as it takes to raise an average kid from birth to 18. Also, they keep a strong control over the recomb even After it is sold. It is almost more a Lease than selling. They retain the right to 'repossess' or 'recall' any recomb they develop. Recombs are not 'easy' to make. There is a balance of intelligence and other qualities that they work for. Not all recombs created reach 'decanting', nor do all that are decanted make it to shipment. Dak spends alot of resources for their 'recombs'. Both in money and time. They 'condition' them, reprogram them, and if a master dies, they take back their 'property'. Its in the bill of sale. A clause that Dak is able at any time to take back its property, if for reprogramming or for resale. Another thing. Dak is smart enough Not to want their creations to think for themselves beyond what they allow. Freedom of a few can mean danger, ie, resistance groups of recombs, rogues. So when you want to know why Dakiron would bother, think about the recombs being 'leased' in actuality. Dak reserves the right to 'Recall'. Hope this helped. *hugs* DB/Di -------------------------- Message 6262 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 21:47:11 1999 EST From: Shattered (#24781) To: *Chat (#5391) Ah, but with the wonderful advent of replicator technology, you can feed an army of recomb babies for simply the cost of electricity. Or not even that if you've got self sustaining generators. So, if we're going to be realistic about it, as someone said before, why do we have replicators, recombs, dragons, submariners, magic, bionics, and a whole lot of other things? If you're going to have all that stuff, figure it into your game in all aspects, not just where it suits you. Replicators would make it so you could feed, clothe, and entertain a hundred thousand kids for dirt cheap or FREE. And I have no doubt in my mind that a big corp like Dakiron would have a lot of replicators kicking about. -------------------------- Message 6263 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Mar 21 21:47:40 1999 EST From: Tarla (#18104) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Recombs.... Look at it this way.... Dakiron is the slave trade of the post-apocolyptic world. When slavery was prevelant in the south in America many many moons ago, escaped slaves were hunted down, re-captured, and either killed or beaten nearly to death and returned to thier Masters or re-sold... depending on who did the catching. The slavers didn't like it when slaves escapped before being sold, teh Masters didn't like it when slaves escaped AFTER being sold, and everyone involved tried real damn hard to see to it that escaped slaves didnt stay escaped. The life of an escaped slave wasn't a pretty one... unless they managed by some miracle to make it to the north where they were automatically free and STAYED THERE, they were doomed to a life of abject terror, looking over thier shoulder every moment of thier lives. Now, perhaps it would be advisable to create an area in the MOO which is "the north"... If a recomb escapes and gets there, they are free and no hunter is permitted to take a recomb from there and return it to Dakiron. HOWEVER... that recomb leaves the free zone, it's free game. Now, pertaining to replicators. First off, a 'shirt might be a hell of a lot simplier to 'replicate' than a very specific formula that is part of the nutrients to grow say 1 or 2 of the 50 recombs that are in the vats at one time..more likely hundreds. (Remember, not all live to be decanted OR to be shipped) Now if special nutrients need to be changed subtly and quite often, replicators may Not be the way to go. Science is an exact science and when making something with as complex a DNA as a recomb, ya might not just push a button. I have had to make 'plates' for Labs. A special nutrient base is 'cooked' onto the bottom of a petri dish..some times a doctor would ask for a 'mix'..And I am not learned in higher biological 'stuff'..No, it would not be a simple Replicator dessert. I think Quinn said something of that nature. Anyway, look at this from a historical point of view. Slavery was ended once, and it likely will be again at some point, when everyone starts getting fed up with it again.... And I'm not even saying anything about racial prejudice here. There are alot of recomb haters around. Hell, the Emancipation Proclamation took place more than a hundred years ago, and there are still people like that that hate one race or another. What have I done so wrong to be hunted? Shattered's a consumate house lizard, and has been from the start actually, he does anything a select group of people ask him to. He has one master, as others I know of do, and that master has also given him alot of freedom, mostly because he's never on. I suppose if I came right out and said Shattered's been working for Red Fang ever since he joined the Rangers, some people would be shocked, some would be downright appaled. I don't care. Red payed crystals, he owns the recomb. Or leases. Or whatever idiocy is supposed to happen. And as for my other character, Pounce, he has a "master" too, and he's even passed all the tests and stuff the first time through, with flying colours. But there's a good logic here. Recomb players may complain about the fact that getting captured and all that shit is bad and is the fault for getting a few more coded body parts and another weapon, but think about this for a moment... This moo is not just coded, it's also something called RP. Now tell me, what's more fun? Being a free recomb, sitting the in the bar for an hour waiting for RP? (I've been there, and it's shit.) Or, is it better to be under a master's command, going out and doing jobs, RPing being a servant, maybe some kinky-moo-bondage or whatever...also, RPing reconditioning and the like would probably be interesting as well. The point I'm making here is this: don't expect a character's life to be a free-ride, especially if it's a species that was bred for slavery. Just make sure your container is described to reflect the size and nature of the items in it. A lockable sword sheathe doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but at least people will know it's big enough to hold a sword, and likely contains one. As opposed to shoving the sword into the pocket of your blue jeans or some such. Think about it in terms of what ICly makes sense instead of an OOC action to prevent looting, and you're in great shape! -------------------------- Message 6315 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Mar 26 11:00:48 1999 EST From: Pounce (#24787) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Makes sense, but..... That makes sense, but I'm almost inclined to agree with Tira..... I mean, what kinda container could hold a POLEAXE? (although with a little ingeneuity you could describe such a container as if when you lock it, you're holding on to the thing so tightly someone can't take it from you, but I suppose THAT would prolly be against the rules as well....) -------------------------- Message 6316 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Mar 26 11:03:47 1999 EST From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Simple answer. If it wouldn't fit in a container, don't put it in one? Or leave it home when you think it's most at risk. I know this sounds `lame' in terms of mechanics, but it's not one of the things that stretches realism to the ridiculous level. -------------------------- Message 6317 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Mar 26 11:07:42 1999 EST From: Yeullan (#19204) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Containers, objects, and looting You guys are probably going to kick me for this, but... Looting is a part of GW's culture, and in most cases a completely IC action. It would be nice if people wouldn't, yeah, but it DOES happen. Putting an object in something ICly described to be far smaller is indeed against rules of common sense, if not the MOO itself. Now, I myself am guilty of doing this, and I can see the rationale behind putting something OOCly in a container while it may ICly and realistically be in some chest at home. But that goes without saying -- if this much is allowed, if your character gets into a fix, is he or she going to pull that poleaxe out of his or her belt pouch and start swinging madly? Something to think about, perhaps. Or maybe just something to retaliate in clever jibes at me about. -------------------------- Message 6318 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Mar 26 11:07:56 1999 EST From: Pounce (#24787) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Does it have to be INSIDE the container? It was said at his wake that the with his passing the world lost one of it's last, true, great Bards. He encouraged other young musicians to follow him into the Circle and follow in his footsteps; among them, Celtic musician, Robert Reeder; hammer dulcimer and bodhran musician, Matthew Kirby; and pipe sargent major, Jamie Womelduff, who piped his wake with tears flowing down his face. To him, I lift this glass. The Mark of the Bard The old one lay in stillness, hands crossed upon his breast The young ones came to see him, peaceful in his rest No more the music came from him, no more the laughing gale No more the fire of passion in a quiet winter's tale. Then a young one rose from his place and he began to sing His hands were quick and agile, making the harp strings ring. The music then poured out of him, remembering the old bard's life He sang of honor and of faith, he sang of truth and light. Then the pipes wailed out, their lament filling the hall The music of sorrow crying, filling the hearts of all One by one they came to him, the last sight of him in this world Each hand that touched, each tear that dropped, a memory of a heart stilled. But know ye all this truth, forever the bard's music lives on It beats in the hearts of those hearing it and they pass it in their own song. So mourn not the death of the passing Bard, nor give up his ghost to the end But bend your ear to the music and hear his heart on the wind. -------------------------- Message 6360 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Apr 3 08:50:40 1999 EST From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) I seriously doubt that from what I've seen.. If you used magic against me I'd be sleeping while you looted my body.. Seen it happen way to many times recently.. Plus that is the hazard of being a student of magic I reckon.. Honestly there is alot to be considered but in some cases slowing a spell down would be actually more fun for everyone.. I'd say it was dependant on the type and difficulty of the spell and the level of the user..
