The unemployment rate in the USA is nearly 4%, the lowest in years. The only reason why the stock market is down is because of the decline in the Asian market. Military spending has already been cut by a whole third along with the pork it used to bring ($400 dollar hammers and such). People are making more than they would have in previous years in the US or if the former trend had continued. If they aren't making more money it's because they made a choice to be drones. If they didn't make the choice to be a low paid drone, then it's because they're lazy and won't get up off their ass to go out and make an honest (or dishonest) dollar because of some career pipe dream. The few that are left just got the shaft in life and should have the smarts to make something of themselves because no one is going to do it for them. And if someone does it for them, then they will not learn a thing and end up in the same situation. -------------------------- Message 4883 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Sep 17 22:19:44 1998 EDT From: Clayson (#17237) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Lykaj and Red. Give or take a couple hours. I completed 21hrs of the drive without stopping. And here is a brief travel journal (since I was alone I had nothing to do but make smartass comments to myself) The vehicle: 87 Chevy Pickup. No extended cab. No A/C. No Tape deck (broken). No courtesy lights inside (missing bulbs). Day 1: 1hr: No problems (thought I had everything) 3hr: Damn, forgot to get my jackets. 4hr-5hr: Almost picked up a friend in North Carolina (speeding ticket) 6hr: Should have been at Slayer's by this point. 7-8hr: Finally understand the directions and make it to Slayer's. Day 2: 2hr: Entering South Carolina see this sign for speeding in work areas: Speeding in work zone punishable by a fine of $500 and 30days in jail. (Ouch!) 6hr: My ass has fallen asleep. Developing a nice one-sided burn/tan. 7-8hr: Start dancing to songs on the radio while driving. 8hr and 15mins: Mother Nature puts on a very nice lightning show. 8hr 25mins: Torrential Downpour. Feel like Moses parting the Red Sea. Dodge cars who have almost stopped on the highway. 8hr 35mins: Need gas. Still raining. Hear about a tornado warning. Idly wonder if its near where I am and if you can see a Tornado in the dark. 10hr: Wonder what would happen if I hit Bambi's mom at 70mphs. Accelerate to 75 again. 11hr: Sing at the top of my lungs to the radio. 12hr: Everytime someone passes me I utter: "I am crushing your tires" And make a strange hand and finger gesture. 13hr: Recite the line from the end of T2. 14hr-16hr: Decide that every radio station in the country has the same playlist and must play those songs 3 or 4 times. 17hr: Listen to a Spanish Radio station because I know I haven't heard those songs over and over again. 17hr 15min: Never knew they spanish liked the accordian so much. 17hr 30mins: Hear a butchered translation of an English song. Sounds like Muzak on acid. 18hr: Imagine seeing police around every corner as I speed along. 19hr: I do see police everywhere. And they are always searching someone's car. 20hr-21hr: Zoned out. Leg is now locked to act as cruise control (since my truck has none). Get lost in San Antonio. See how much fun it is to drive by yourself for 21hrs and have to listen tot he radio? -=0 -------------------------- Message 4931 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Sep 23 15:10:11 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Styx Love ya man, I am sure glad you are closer to me now.. A shopping and site seeing tour of the oldest capital in the US, Santa Fe, New Mexico.. Rich in culture and something to behold. Of course touring the indian runes at Bandaler.. A trip to Taos, NM which is rich in art and Kzinti type people. A night of dancing, or a trip to a casino for those who are of age. Defense Dept says hacking stories were untrue SAN FRANCISCO (Wired) - The US Department of Defense said that recent reports of hackers penetrating military Web sites and altering soldiers' medical files were inaccurate. Instead, a ``Red Team'' of American military computer experts carried out a simulated attack designed to test the security of the Pentagon's computer networks, said a spokeswoman for the Defense Department Thursday. ``The simulated attack is part of the recent exercises to assess the danger to unclassified material, such as personnel records,'' Suzan Hansen said Thursday. The confusion arose last week, when Money told the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Conference that crackers had accessed a medical database in the southeastern United States and changed blood types in soldiers' records. Hansen said that Money was merely referring to a Red Team exercise, not a real cyberattack. At the conference, Money reportedly said that the Red Team exercise prompted the Pentagon to develop a more restrictive security policy on the type of information that will be stored in military computers connected to the Internet. Gonna be another one of those days. I'm glad I'll be fortunate enough to sleep through it. Bish said it better than I could have. Anyway... please, folks. *request's are not always handled immediately, in any case. At times, they involve a discussion between various members of the staff here. I can't approve a dragonrider, mech, or mage, for example. I can, however, make sure that the people who _can_ know that the request has been made. That's just an example. God I'm tired. Believe it or not... there are several revisions of rules and/or code going on at the moment. I personally am not sure of who is handling each aspect of each class/code issue/rules issue. I'm sure that it isn't just me that's in that position. Several rules have recently been changed, or are in a limbo state at the moment. We don't always have an answer to give people right away, since certain things need to be clarified here and there before we can say 'no' or 'yes' to anything. Right before she left, RH changed some of the mage rules. The current mage GMs have changed them to some extent recently as well. Some of the rules stated that Illusion Lore, for example, was not just 'knowing what an illusion is', but the ability to _create_ them, as well. A non-mage won't have this skill, right? Right. A final note... EESH. I don't get my way all the time. Even if I do it's rarely an immediate experience. Have a little patience, please, with the GMs as a whole if you'd like it returned to you. We all work hard here, and being screamed at isn't fun, nope it isn't. I know that (ok, yes, I'm powerless in regards to approvals... but IF I wasn't... ) I sure as hell wouldn't approve anyone if they came to me ranting wildly about it, rather than saying, 'Hey, I'd like to do this thing, for this reason. Can I?' A please in there would be really nice sometimes, too. The staff isn't a part of the code here. We aren't an automated feature of the MOO -- please don't treat us that way. Now, I consider myself a reasonably patient person, and sofar nothing Jonas has done has made me think any less of him than, say, a rather immature player named Red Fang a while back. What we have here, lest we forget, is a game. As a game, we have rules to make things have some semblance of 'fairness'. However, in any game where you have multiple people with the power to effect the 'games' of all the other people, it's inherantly unfair. No matter how many rules we make, and how much time we spend, nobody will ever get a fair shake. On this little MOO we have people known as 'the staff'. Now whether this refers to the fact that they are hard, long, or hurt when they hit you, it doesn't really matter. They have power over the games of 'the players'. The enjoyment of the game is, infact, your responsibility, as staff. If someone isn't enjoying the game, it's generally not their fault, it's the staffs fault. Whether that be from rules that are too vague, too strict, or too unbalanced, or from blatant disregard for the duties and responsibilities of the staff's position, it doesn't matter. For the past week I've been doing telephone technical support for a small ISP with about 1600 customers. I've helped people with problems that varied from com port conflicts to simple lack of understanding (also known as stupidity). But, in the end, whether they enjoy the internet or not, was my problem. If they didn't enjoy the internet, we would loose a customer, and the entire customer base would stuffer, even if only a tiny amount. Ghostwheel needs alot of things. But first, and foremost, it needs staff people who are thick skinned. When you take on a job like this, you distance yourself somewhat from your own pride and ego. Your job is not to be imporant, or to craft the world into your vision of the perfect kingdom to rule, it is to make the game enjoyable for the players. Sometimes this is painful. Sometimes we have to give up things that we love dearly, for the sake of the game. One instance off the top of my head is the plotline with Bronson. I didn't like the outcome of that plotline, personally, but it was one of the rather good plots that I've seen run in this game. If I had to decide between keeping Toosay Island, my baby, and seeing it sink into the sea in the name of a good plot, I'd sink it into the sea. Games like this are about change. If the game is stangnant, older players get bored. If older players leave, the population never matures. If the population never matures, you never get beyond being overwhelmed by 'twinks', newbies, and people who complain about how the game is 'boring'. Ghostwheel has matured little since I first arrived. In the four years (good lord) since then, we've gotten a rather complicated combat system and magic system, and expanded the MOOs area by about x10. Have we gotten any better roleplaying? Hard to say, because I sofar haven't chosen to be involved in that. In my experience, however, when good roleplaying happens, people talk about it, and people get excited about it. As a small-time businessman, and primarily a consultant, the economies of Ghostwheel bother me. I've spent plenty of time playing games like Civilization, Warcraft, and Age of Empires, and all of those games have a more complex economy than Ghostwheel. In Ghostwheel we have two things that have 'value'. We have weapons/armor, and we have crystals. Crystals are valuable on their own, and weapons/armor are valuable on their own. They're often traded for each other. Aside from that, there's no room for gaining 'MOO-wealth'. So you're either a very clever arms dealer (not likely), or a combat monster who harvests crystals. Most of the character concepts that survive in this world are based off that paradigm. Granted, there are plenty of 'hangers-on', but much of the 'hangers-on' wealth, and the fringe player concept wealth are just role-played. In the end, if anybody wants to take part in the coded economy, they have to go out and bust ass for crystals. In a game world set after a great holocaust, this economy is relevant for a little while, but it's not broad enough to sustain human curiousity and intellect for long. So that's one area that could take a large amount of improvement. There are others. If I may, I'm going to share a bit of my personal life at this point. Every weekend, for the past year or so, I've gotten together with a group of my friends, about 4-6 of us usually, and we watch movies, eat, and role-play. Mostly, we've been role-playing the various White Wolf games, primarily Vampire, as well as a little Planescape and a tiny bit of Rifts. Our gaming group is rather odd. We have a short mexican ex-marine (he didn't make it through basic, a bed fell on his shoulder) who works out for two hours every night and punched somebody in the throat last weekend (put him in intensive care), a semi-psychopathic normal looking guy who's afraid of women, an inept computer science major who's generally described as an 'asshole', a marine biology major who has a talent for pissing people off, but is also extremely charismatic, and me. If that doesn't sound similar, or worse, than the population of Ghostwheel, I don't know what does. Between us all, different people running different games, we've had some very good role-playing experiences. Games where you actually take on your character, and feel what they feel. That's something worth 'wasting time' with. In the last week or so, while I was away from my computer baby-sitting the aforementioned ISP, I logged on as one of my alts to play scrabble with Quinn. I had forgotten quite how good it felt to be able to play out like I was somebody else, and ignore my usual manerisms and quirks. There's something about that ability, combined with raw text, that makes MOO a very compelling role-playing environment. But somehow, we've messed it up. It was innocent enough, add a feature here, add a little code here, write a system for this, and a system for that, but in the end, we lost the heart of what the game should be, and it shows. I'm not making any character judgements here about any of the players or staff of ghostwheel, but you'd have to be blind to think that the game hasn't gone downhill in the last several years. I've made quite a few lengthy posts of this type in my day. I've even helped out organizing staff meetings and the like before. I haven't done as much as I could, and I haven't done as much as I should. I owe this place alot, and I haven't given as much as I've recieved. The gist of this post is this: I want to fix this MOO. I want to make this a place where newbies log on, and are instantly swept into the storyline. Where people want to spend time, not to chat with friends or fight monsters, but to play their characters in a compelling environment. I want a system of staff-policing that minimizes the need for players to be @jailed, and seeks other forms of conflict resolution. I want people to log on every day excited to find out what happened in the game world while they were out shopping, or at school, or asleep. Razorhawk, for all the stuff that I once considered I had to 'put up with' from her, is a very smart woman. If the code and game world, not to mention the staff, hadn't changed her original vision for this MOO, this place would be much, much more popular, and probably quite a bit more compelling. This is not to say that we should revert, it's just to say that we shouldn't discount ideas and suggestions based on their ability to be coded, or how much they make sense to us. Ghostwheel can do one of three things. It can stay the same, it can revert to its former state, or it can move forward. I would very much like to see Ghostwheel become polished, in the professional sense. There are alot of things that seem like good ideas, but in the end really only serve to make the MOO more complicated for all but a few. It's a quandry. Do you code more, or do you allow more things to be role-played. Do you write more rules, or do you lax the restrictions. What seems to be the obvious choice is often the incorrect one. Four years ago, if you'd asked me if I thought the combat system would make the game more fun, I would have said 'of course, are you on crack or something?' (well, I probably wouldn't have said that, but you get the idea) Today, if you asked me if I thought the combat system made the game more enjoyable, I would say no. Sofar, in my view, it hasn't. It's shaped our player-base quite a bit, but I don't think it's made the game more enjoyable on a whole. That's one of those 'things'. In the end, we need to come up with a list of the things that Ghostwheel really needs, and prioritize them. I'm willing to spend an hour every evening (or two hours every other evening, but at least 7 hours a week) working on 'fixing' Ghostwheel. The things that will need to be done to fix the MOO probably aren't going to be easy. They rarely are. Leveling all the characters might be one of the things that, in the end, is necessary to make the game enjoyable for everyone. People will bitch about that. People will bitch more than they've ever bitched before. I worked for these stats, they'll say, and they'll be right. But the MOO isn't about stats, the MOO is about role-playing, and if the way the stats are distributed gets in the way of the role-playing, than it's something that needs to be fixed. I have yet to play an interesting role-playing game (in real life, or on a MOO) where I was the most powerful being. When the players, and the party, aren't afraid of anything, their role-playing quality slacks off. The most interesting games I've played were the ones where everything could kill us. That makes players think, instead of punch the keys really fast. I've made posts like this before, and usually after them there will be a few follow up posts, maybe a meeting of the wizzen or two, and then everything goes back to normal. I dearly hope that's not what happens this time. I'm probably going to end up cross-posting this to *chat, much to the irritation of staff-people who may think that we should provide a united front. Well, it's not a united front, and people disagree. Nobody's right all of the time, and I've made my share of mistakes here, just like everybody else. One of the problems in the staff meetings of yore was everybody talking at the same time. In the next few days I'm going to work on creating a generic discussion room, where only one person at a time can talk or emote. It will also have a basic voting system, and people will be able to watch and listen without being in the room. In about a week, perhaps less, I'm going to schedule two meetings, one for the staff and one for everybody. Meeting times will hopefully be posted to *news, and I'll try to schedule a time when everybody can be there. There will, of course, be schedule conflicts, and $notes with comments from people who won't be able to be there will be accepted and discussed. I plan on posting the logs of the general meeting, and possibly the staff meeting, on the web, for everybody to see. This MOO is a good place, is has a long history, and a sizeable collection of resources at its disposal. It isn't as good as it should be, though. It isn't nearly as good as it should be. Hopefully we can fix that, if we work together. -Mulder -------------------------- Message 5031 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Oct 3 20:33:40 1998 EDT From: Tirafal (#24173) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Mulder's post A hearty YAYYY! to Mulder's post. I am (quite proudly) a newbie to this MOO. I've had my character awhile but everytime I logged on I had no idea what I was doing or WHAT to do. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago when I got actual rl help from a couple of people on the MOO that I finally started logging in and playing. This in itself says something about the MOO. If a person doesn't have the support to be able to login and create a character and get everything they need in the way of instruction to jump in and play the game with out having somebody to outright teach them how, something is wrong. The second thing: Since I started playing on the MOO I've done two things....busted my ass to aquire crystal and stats so I wouldn't die just wandering around the world and RPing my butt off whenever I've been given the opportunity. Oddly, they appear to be two very different, distinct parts to the MOO. I love the RP but there's not much opportunity to do it unless you're willing to go hang out in the bar in R/T. THEN you might be able to do a bit. The oddest thing, I think, and the thing that has caused me some degree of disorientation, is that I seem to be the ONLY newbie on the MOO. At least the only newbie RPing. That's not to say that I haven't ran into some very kind and helpful people that have given me a hand at getting started...I have. And I'm very grateful for the assistance that they've given me. I'm just sad that it took me this long and it had to go to such great lengths for me to learn the game. -------------------------- Message 5032 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Oct 3 20:38:43 1998 EDT From: Sterno (#21938) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: GW My first three months on GW were really slow. Simply put, it's hard to get started as a newbie here, in terms of game rules, etc, and even harder to actually get into any worthwhile RP. The only reason I stuck around is because I knew a lot of these players from CS, and after RP there, I was kind of 'accepted' into the RP here. That being said, I think the main thing prohibiting RP on GW is hunting/sparring. Really, there isn't much that can be gained through RP.. most things here are gained by sparring up your stats and hunting to get crystals. Sure, you can RP kissing the ass of someone who is powerful, but even that has its limits. I'd say a leveling would be welcome if a new system was implemented for stats and economy. If it was just hunt/spar still, we'd be back where we are now in a short amount of time. Yes, I like to Rp, I love it, but I enjoy it more when I _do_ have to be careful what I say or someone with 4x my stats will beat me up. I think it is great, I dont care how crazy it sounds. I believe hunting and sparring is not all bad, it gives you something to reach for. If it became a just RP MOO, I wouldnt hang around because most RP happens when you are around because of sparring or hunting. Yes, CS. It has it's problems. But here are some things that encourage RP there... 1) RP goes a LONG way towards you living or dying there, and whether or not you are successful. 2) There is always an element of excitement in coded combat against ANYONE there. Equipment is fairly common.. while the older players have a better chance in combat, a fairly new character COULD take them down. And 3 on 1 will almost always take you down unless you run. Why's this good? Because newbies actually stand a chance and can accomplish something 3) The economy there, while players complain about it, is pretty good. You can get jobs from corps.. you can run jobs on the street. You can jack into the matrix and sell information. There are multiple ways to make money, leading to a greater variety of ways you can RP and still 'succeed', or at least make a living. Yes, CS has it's problems, I'd hate to see GW become another CS. But it does do some things well, and it might be good to look at what succeeds here and what fails. Oberon's right, some people are here because they love hacking things up. Make that -one- way to make a living or grow in power, not the -only- way. My fear is that the player base is too set in it's ways to want to change. God knows I wouldn't be happy about the prospect of losing my stats if I had been sparring for two years to get them. But something has to change, as Mulder said. We all have said that this place is going downhill. I wasn't even here for the 'good old days', and I've seen this place decline. There's really no reason to get excited here. Damn, I've spammed WAY too much and basically repeated Mulder. Anyway, if anyone wants to talk over ideas of how to change things with me, OR point out how I'm wrong, feel free. This was even before we had bladed and blunt and shooting and throwing and whip. An armed of 95 was hot shit back then. We roleplayed a lot, it was silly, melodramatic, but it was FUN. We had no PKers then. Or if we did, it was solved pretty quickly. Mostly everyone was here for fun, and we were willing to sacrifice a little to make sure everyone else had some fun too. We didn't have a lot of rules, there was no @jail. I logged in everyday in anticipation of the day's new kidnapping of Bronson, or the latest area to be explored. It can be melodramatic, they can be old ideas brought back to life. I don't care, just come up with plots and send them to me. (I warn you, I'll be forwarding them to a list that the GMs can read. All of them.) -------------------------- Message 5043 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Oct 3 23:45:19 1998 EDT From: Jonas (#24588) To: *Chat (#5391) Hmm....after reading all this crap, I decided I should screw being a mage and be _original_, goddamnit. I believe a few years ago Styx posted that a sheet was not to be taken seriously till it was okayed by a wiz. He had every right to ask about it on a public post. Bish in my opinion was the one who attacked him with his answer. Then it was gang up time. Really...what are you ppl trying to do, make it a wiz only club? Soon all the players will leave, then, maybe then you guys will be happy..you can all sit around and cry BORING, or perhaps entertain each other with little fables of your real life. I do have to say something in response to Mason. First, if both players _and_ GMs don't work together, nothing works. The blame cannot rest fully on either side. Second, on GW, GMs have control of specific classes. It's like this on several MUSHes and other M*s as well. Personally, I have a character that has been waiting 3 months for approval on a MUSH. Am I pissed? Well, yeah. But I also understand that for characters that are somehow 'different' from what is normal, as Jonas is at this point, it takes time for them to be approved sometimes. Jonas wanted this to be immediate -- and because of who was, or wasn't, online at the time, this was not possible. If no GMs had been online at the time, there wouldn't have been a response anyway. The point, I suppose, is, that we can't just scream until things go our way. Let's all be nice to each other? It'd stop alot of the nonsense. -------------------------- Message 5047 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 4 01:43:51 1998 EDT From: Styx (#1610) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Old times I was talking with Stalinger the other day and we got to talking about the 'old days'. I'm still pretty new to this MOO ( 9 months ) so my ideas and thoughts might lack the benefit of long term experience, but I have a few opinions as well. I believe that one of the few things that takes away from game is the current stat system. It seems to me that as it is right now, there are alot of imbalances. Here is the example I came up with. Someone with high dodge and say 1000+ bladed still dodges the attack of someone with 700 bladed. I believe a more realistic approach would be to have the 1000+ individual parry more often, because even though he may be higher bladed wise, it seem to me that it would be very difficult to actually dodge the 700+'ers attack. I also think that when people are sitting the shouldn't be able to dodge, and have very high parry/attack penalties. 2nd, I think it would be cool to have uncoded skill take preference over the coded stats. There are lots when sickly little orphans and scrawny bookworms beat up on 10' tall gladiators who have IC'ly study battle techniques for 50 years. Those are just a few of the things I was thinking about, more to come... I promise. Somewhat of a reply to Anubis' #5054... I agree that some discrepancies occur with stats, where characters with little to no background training can kick around those who can. But think of it this way: if there were absolutely no stats, if you could determine your character's combat prowess from the word go, who WOULDN'T say that their char had trained with the reclusive master of such-and-such-a-weapon in their childhood? We would HOPE that not everyone would want to be a '10 foot tall gladiator' (good choice of words, btw :) but the fact remains that some people would RP themselves as such. I've seen it before. I've heard about RP sessions where some people's ideas of roleplayed combat amounts to 'X dodges' regardless of injury, skill and the like. I realize that both sides (code/no code) may seem to have their merits and their problems. I, personally anyway, see having no code as more of a problem than having it. I've seen the rise in posts, complaints, flames, people leaving and @jailings related to the rise in 'twinkiness.' The only thing that's standing in the way of even MORE IC discontinuity as far as stats/combat goes is the coded combat system. The combat system is the undeniable, irrefutable judge and jury in any situation. It even says so in some game file or *RPG post, if I recall correctly, where it said that the code (if it exists) will always take precedence over any equivalent uncoded skill on your .sheet. I like having the right to choose coded or uncoded with the parties involved, to account for things such as surprise, improvised/dirty fighting, and magic...or also maybe because I don't like seeing the same 'You swing your weapon at Enemy' text fill my screen over and over. (Though I do applaud the messaging on most of the 'new' weapons, soulblades and other 'unique' items.) Whatever the case, if I decide that whoever I'm fighting isn't reacting as they should (to injury, skill difference, etc.), I can always fall back on the coded combat system. I encourage those that are currently in dislike of coded combat, stats and everything else we've been filling up *Chat about, to think about what it would be like with no 'failsafe' to fall back on when twinkiness rears its ugly head. Also, since uncoded combat is perfectly acceptable for most people, if you really dislike stats and coded combat that much, who says you can't do it uncoded? Once again, just my 2 cents. -------------------------- Message 5059 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 4 22:45:41 1998 EDT From: Karma (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Oh... I do have to say this. The games Mulder mentioned as having better economies than Ghost are strategy games, not role-playing games. We hinge on the individual, not the nation. There will not be a "toy" economy as many of you are used to it. I will not allow that to happen. I spewed one night on @x about an idea I had. We'd open mines for something called 'transputty' which could be shaped by players into real items of quality dependent on their skill. Transputty can be shaped into swords, guns, just about anything given the right amount and the sufficient skill of the shaper. I am not gleeful about robots who send people on little errands. That's only marginally different than sparring. I'm all for more to do here, both in role-play and in solo-play, but I'm not for throwing together things just to get it done. You all know I like to do things 'right', which usually means putting them off. Well, this is another case of it. If you're bored or frustrated with Ghostwheel, don't threaten to leave, just shut up and go already. When we're finished fixing things, you're free to come back, or not. What if your 'party' doesn't have a cleric/healer? Not all groups have them, or if do, that in itself isn't always realistic. We have no death of a permenent kind here. Not all of us are great healers. We can't carry a mage around in our pockets. We learn to heal ourselves. This takes time, alot less than irl. There should be some 'pain' involved with sparring, hunting or combat should you be injured. Balance is necessary. Were some things cannot be coded in a realistic manner, we make exceptions. Taking longer to heal is a good thing. Anyway, I know how hard it is for a newbie to start. And you're right, you'll never catch up to stats gods. I've been here a year and I'm not even close. But you get used to it. Stat Gods are pretty nice people. They could PK everyone and own all the loot in the game, but they don't. (with the exception of a certain sale that I won't mention *cough* Rathe *cough*) Anyhow... work on getting a better medic skill. Hell, Williker healed me for like 173 damage yesterday in one attempt. I can barely do more than that with the mage spell Restore. Has Origin's received rave reviews? This isn't a canned Origin or EA game. This is a reality. Furthermore, we're still an ALPHA release. Haha! That being said: (a) I've made Medic easier to improve, as I'm sure many of you have noticed. (b) 60m between heals is not a terribly long time to wait. Someone's condition isn't going to improve in 15s. It probably won't improve in a minute, if EVER with a simple first aid kit, but I didn't want to get THAT realistic. Yet. (c) When you're injured, your skills are penalized, INCLUDING Medic. Even if you're not sparring, you should fight with a partner, or find someone to heal you. Hell, it's giving them a chance to boost their Medic. (d) Try using the medbay east of the R/T round room when severely damaged. It gives better bonuses than a medkit. (e) You can always heal with crystals. (F)inally, the new character generation (now working, but not installed) will allow newbies to start with much better skills, with the option to distribute them such that you may have a single starting skill better than someone who's been here for many months. Everyone says they are concerned about attracting new players and retaining the ones that are here. Yet I see this whole medic move as (another) move that just makes it harder for the newbie to get started. A total stranger to this MOO would have no idea who to even contact to get healing. And how can you get crystal to heal up when you can't even kill a minierex (who half the time don't even GIVE you crystal)? -------------------------- Message 5131 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sun Oct 11 13:19:13 1998 EDT From: Yalindra (#13170) To: *Chat (#5391) Like Quinn said, hunt with a buddy. Sure, you'll be fucked up after taking on a 5th level Brujah black dragon built on 250 character points but until you say you're going to spend time healing you're still going to be wounded. But once you say you're going to be healing the game master will just say "3 months pass and you're healed up completely". Unfortunately for those who've been complaining they have to remember that this MOO's combat system works in real time (or 1/3 real time or something) and you have to wait out the healing. That's why you have an alt character and don't tell me that you don't. Everyone has at least 3 characters here. I was taking orders on the dresses I make, and we had something of a surprise. One of the pieces I have worked on for a while has been dubbed 'The Ugly Duckling Dress' by everyone around here. It's olive green taffeta, black and gold metallic, and has bright orange flowers on it. Now... no one likes olive green or orange just in general, from what I have seen. Of course... I -love- this dress. It's my favorite. I expected everyone to hate it... but it was universally adored. I was damned shocked. I probably could have sold a dozen of them easily. At $125. Sick people, how I love them all. Hell... I like the dress too. There were a few nice things there -- few of which I could afford. I got a chance to meet all the people that make things that make me feel like an artless fumbling halfwit, and all of them were wonderful. They actually liked my work, which stunned me. I didn't make as much as I'd hoped -- then again, I didn't construct as much stock as I'd planned to, either, so it worked out alright in the end. I did find something odd, however -- there's a company now producing a line of dolls that look -exactly- like the women in my sketches. Ignore that abomination they call a dress and think fishnet and latex. Black hair, too. Soo... such was the grand quest to Joisey. We were happily drunk, mildly high, and shopping while dressed in elegant clothing. Gods that was fun. The reasoning behind not allowing 'alts' to heal, spar etc, is that it has been abused. repeatedly, and in some cases still is. Alt's are not to interract with one another. Everyone goes through the 'helpless' cycle. You do have another alt, that has done quite well in the short time here. Find others with decent skills, as we said before: Do it with a friend. There was good reason for the boosting to be a bit more difficult. The day or two when boosting of jsut about any skill was so easy, that was a bug. Many took advantage of it, knowing it would not last. Some players spar and hunt almost exclusively. Others RP almost exclusively. Some find a happy medium somewhere between. Relax and learn, and explore, and have fun. Boosting isn't the only way. Some players will go and beat on a poor mini, then heal it then smack it around some more and heal it yet again. This works. As Quinn said. If you are injured, your medic will take longer to boost. Try healing others, or untill you don't cause more damage than heal, try out the mini's. Enjoy and take time to smell the flowers. *hugs* DB/Di -------------------------- Message 5144 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Oct 13 09:17:03 1998 EDT From: Eponine (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Medic et all. For right now, I can understand what Merridwen is going through. All I can offer as hope is this, and it probably seems like cold comfort: Things are changing, Quinn is working on it. It's difficult to start with little or no stats and work your way higher, Mini-Rexes give few, if any crystals, fatigue and the latency between medic allowances make a newbie even weaker. For now, I suggest teaming up with an older character who has more experience. If this is not a possibility, perhaps curtail attempts to raise stats until you can. Yes, this seems very unfair, and I can honestly sympathize with newbies who feel thus stricken at the moment. But, there are things going on behind the GM curtain to help ease this, so watch *db-issues and *rp and *news, there'll be new developments coming. -------------------------- Message 5145 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Oct 13 09:49:39 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: healing Doctor it hurts when I do this!! Getting hurt is a given when the only way to get stats up is to spar them up. 2. Getting stats up is an absolute necessity for any chance at survival in the GW world. 3. You DON'T boost once a minute. In fact I attempted to heal over thirty times before I boosted. And this was with stats so low that had it been bladed or blunt I would have boosted at least 4 times in the same amount of time. 4. When you have an extremely low medic you run the chance of harming yourself as much as healing yourself. I started out with an injury of 63 and ended up with an injury of 124 because of low medic stat. This, to a newbie, is adding insult to injury (no pun intended). Newbies have enough strikes against them without being forced to kill themselves just to get their medic stat up. 5. Telling a newbie to go to Jizo Island and waving them off isn't enough. This morning I was killed by a mini-rex, the lowest statted AHaB on the MOO. This was AFTER I had attempted to spar with another player and almost got killed in THAT process. 6. Telling a newbie to eat crystal is like Marie Antoinette saying "let them eat cake." A newbie doesn't have the stats to kill anything and HAS no source for crystal. 7. If a player cannot be self sufficient on this MOO and survive the GW world independently from character generation there will be as much frustration as *I* feel among the newbies. They will go away....and a lot of them will not come back. 8. Talking about the "good old days" accomplishes nothing. It was the "good old days" that produced stat gods and game imbalance to begin with, or the changes that have been made in the core would not have been made. On the other hand, making game play next to impossible is NOT the solution. -------------------------- Message 5150 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Oct 13 10:08:14 1998 EDT From: Sterno (#21938) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: last Refer to 5146 -------------------------- Message 5151 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Oct 13 10:14:31 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Previous Lets see.. 1. But in an awful lot of ways, things are easier. Stats DO boost easier than they used to. Medic has always been extremely hard to boost, especially for newbies. But there are ways to survive. After initial difficulties, you'll find something that works best for you, whether it be avoiding stats and concentrating on RP, out-sparring everyone and becoming the next MOO-badass, or a blend of the two and becoming a full-time MOOgeek to try to have your cake and eat it too. Yes, the "good ol days" made everybody statgods and made the newbies harder to work with, but like everyone, I was a newbie myself. I thought it was rather stupid to spar and hunt, and with Synge, I actually took the time to spar him to "reasonable" levels back then (when 300 bladed was well decent, not powerful, but not weak). I mean, you either spar/hunt/rp or your spar/hunt or you RP. As said before in a post, Quinn has been creating a character generation system in which you can get decent stats before you enter into the IC world of monsters, mechs, dragons, subbies and mages. Sure, a mini-rex may whoop up on you (Akane died quite a few times from them), but like Red said, KO them and give them damage, try to heal them. Sure it might take an hour to heal it, but during that time you'll get some boosts. All you whinin', bitchin' fuckrags, HEAL A MINI-REX! As I've learned, it's no big task to go out, and throw yourself at them, boost trying to kill them, waking up, dying, coming back with insanity, and you continue the process until you wanna DC, so when you wake up, whoops, you have 54 bladed! You can now hit the mini-rex to about 15 damage, and heal it from there. And to all you senseless dickweeds who say get some crystals from older players, it don't work. He used BADD's estimate of 4 million gamers worldwide. Assuming that fantasy role game playing had no effect on youth suicide rate, one would have expected about 500 gamers would have committed suicide each year. As of 1987, BADD had documented an average of 7 per year. It would appear that playing D&D could be promoted as a public health measure, because it drastically lowers the suicide rate. --------------------------
