But here goes. Scry isn't seeing through spaces, time, and brick walls.. It's basically like having a photo of the room they're in. As a magister, someone needs an object, for the spell to be 'sympathetic'.. having a rapier or piece of clothing owned by you.. It lets them, for lack of a better word, get your 'scent', kinda like a bloodhound, so they can sniff their way through the ether to look at you. Adepts (being pretty fucking powerful :) don't need an object. In shadowrun, for instance, players traveling astrally can't move through living objects. Solution to protecting a building: weave 'nets' of biological substances into the structure. In AD&D you can, depending on the world, have anti-magic clouds and fields where mage users either can't cast spells, or can't see. In the current Storyteller incarnations, some powers allow you to see images from an object, but only if you have the object. Depending on how well you do at your roll, you see more about the object. Wraiths in Storyteller can move through buildings, but to move through solid structures requires an expenditure of their essence. It's also possible, I believe, to block them out, and block them from manifesting themselves. Granted, mages are a bit on the over-powered side. That's because the code-heavy wizzes are working on that class. Surprise, surprise. If all of the code-heavy wizzes were working on submariners, they'd be whooping all kinds of ass. It's a matter of where your attention lies. If you want your class or group to have something cool, contact one of the code-enabled wizzes with a sensible proposal. I'm not talking about things like 'they can teleport back to their home if they carry this rock!', but things like 'animals won't attack them unless provoked' might be possible. Generally, if you're going to suggest something to be done, make it as simple and straight forward as possible. I, for one, don't have the time to sit here and create these huge complex objects and systems that people don't use. I'm not uninclinded, though, to make an object that'll take me a half hour or so, that increases the neatness and coolness of a class or race. -------------------------- Message 3789 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Jun 22 22:09:28 1998 EDT From: Smoke (#12541) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Mulder Thank you :) -------------------------- Message 3790 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Jun 22 22:19:46 1998 EDT From: Mercury (#16576) To: *Chat (#5391) How about having the magical equivalent of lead for mage x-ray vision. -------------------------- Message 3791 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Jun 22 22:21:31 1998 EDT From: Mulder (#709) To: *Chat (#5391) It would seem fairly obvious that _something_ in the world would conflict with mage power. To reiterate the shadowrun example, magic can't pass through organic material. Therefor, companies who wanted to protect their areas magically without the use of full-time mages would weave a matrix of this biological 'sludge' into their buildings outer structures. Somebody just has to come up with a realistic way to counter mages in this world. Something that magic doesn't like. The krypton of magic, so to speak. Granted, anyone who's basic fiber was inherently magical (a real elf, fairy, whatever) might have a serious problem making the transports work (I say might because throught all of the enious number of fantasy novels dealing with the concept that I've read over the years I've never noticed that any fae had trouble USEING technology... except maybe in WW Changling but that's another story entirely). But all I was saying was that SPELLS would have a problem with technology. Not Spell casters. Look at it as going back to the 'cant cast while wearing armor' thing. Yeah, a mage is capable of wearing and getting full benefit from... say... full plate armor. But he can't CAST in it. By the same token, a mage could USE a shotgun or a laser gun, but if he casts a destructive spell on a shotgun or laser gun (provided it was possible to attack inanimate objects and damage them here) the spell would a) not work B) have much reduced effect or c) malfunction or deflect to another target... whatever. Along this line of thought, and going back to the original argument here, an Adept casting scry on an individual who happened to presently be in a transport would not be able to scry the person. Maybe he might get a picture of the transport itself but not where it was going. More likely he just wouldn't get any result at all. Spell failure. By the same token, Cyborgs (if and when implimented) couldn't be mages because the technology in thier bodies would cause all of thier spells to fail. Get the picture? It's not that a mage can't use technology... it's just that technology would affect thier spells, hence he cant cast while using it and can't cast effectively on technological things. Somehow I think this could all turn into a coding nightmare... but it's the 'standard' way of dealing with non-magical defenses to magic. -------------------------- Message 3807 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Jun 23 11:16:18 1998 EDT From: Heretic (#6143) To: *Chat (#5391) Magic just dosen't work that way here in my eyes, a Mage with Cyborg parts might have trouble casting some spells since those parts interfer with the flow of power but once that power is given form as say fire or wind no matter how many gps's your carrying your still gonna get hit....now scientific device desigend to make power hard or even impossible to shape would work ....(actually rather like that idea but think a magic gizmmo should also be able to stop tech things from working around it )...hmmm H -------------------------- Message 3808 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Jun 23 15:22:47 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: images ok, after somewhat of 2 years I got the first moobash pics posted on my web page.. http://www.thuntek.net/~redfang/images2.html They are not the best but then its picture of a picture kinda thing.. only 6 posted so far .. As a disclaimer, I'm not trying to insult/demean anyone or their ideas, just toss out my feelings, and some of my own. That aside, I don't really think the idea of anti-magic rocks, fibers, robes, paperweights, etc. are very feasible, nor very just. Each 'class' we have here has its distinct advantages, and disadvantages. The relative uncounterability of magic happens to be one of its strengths, the weaknesses being that its very hard to cast in armor (nigh impossible), you get insanity, and you don't really have much of a way of defending yourself if your spell fails. In my mind, asking for something (non-magical) that deflects or absorbs magic would do nothing more than allow such people to wander around taunting mages who (though there are some exceptions) aren't really that well off statwise, effectively removing the powers of those mages. To me, it's about as beneficial as asking for a special type of armor/rock/paperweight that repels/ blocks dragons, or submariners, or people with over 500 bladed. Also, I don't find much of a rationale for it. Armor tends to be metal. Metal comes from the earth. Elementalists use the powers of nature, and Earth happens to be one of them. Now, if it were armor made from enchanted metal/leather/etc, then I could see it having some anti- magic effects, but it would have to be fashioned by a Magus...it would probably be a really blatant beacon for anyone trying to find you via scry or other spells, due to its inherent 'magicness'. If you ask me, magic is the only thing that can really defend against magic, unless it's a combat spell in which case, armor is somewhat useful. To borrow what Sterno said, you can't really invent countermeasures for something that isn't understood. Also, magic isn't a substance or a chemical in your blood, nor does it affect the composition of your skin so that you're essentially 'allergic' to technology...I see no point in rendering mages unable to use technology. (In the 2600s, mages would be damn scarce if they couldn't use technology, and as Stal and the other Teks will attest to, there sure are a lot of mages running around GW.) So what do I think? I've all ready said it - I think that the only way to block magic is with magic...magic lives in people and beings, not rocks, so short of getting a friendly Magus to make you an anti-magic pendant I don't think you're really going to find any of them just lying around. Oh, and about scry having to bend reality and go through brick walls? Most magic here is creating something from nothing, whether it's a fireball, a rabbit, water, or a new set of clothing. Brick walls aren't going to be much of an obstacle for someone who can essentially morph reality to their will :) -------------------------- Message 3812 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Jun 23 21:32:09 1998 EDT From: Sater (#4919) To: *Chat (#5391) Giving away my stuff. Magick Vs. Tech -> Yeah a cyborg cannot be a mage. Why? Because the technology interfers with the magick. Call it a paradox conflict. Science is the art of labeling. Magick is the art of making. To put it another way, Magick draws on things that are not wholly known. Science seeks to label and classify everything. Scry -> What is the big whoop? Sure a 2nd level or higher mage (with the right things) can see your location and who is there. How many of you play on CS where someone can be -hidden- in the same damn room? Talk about your paranoia. As for something blocking scry, I could possibly see it happening if you were deep inside some technological area. Or perhaps someone needs to code up a privacy field generator. Kinda like a force field but it just generates an anti-scry screen. And I thought I was spammy! Ok... on the whole magic vs. tech issue. This is just how I see it, so don't take it as canon or anything. I do think that perhaps two things should be kept in mind. First, just because you see someone's location doesn't mean you know where they are, or, well, you shouldn't. Room titles don't exist ICly, so... unless you know the inside of every single room intimately, you shouldn't automatically know where someone is. As far as an 'anti-magic' item, I'd almost say that it might be interesting to have a 'rune stone' or such that has been suggested that would, perhaps, flare whenever someone is trying to determine something about you through the use of magic at a distance. Though it might not say who is casting, just knowing that it's happenning might be useful. (...and not to throw another bone to the mages, but... ) Since mages can at times recognize the 'magical energies' of other mages, they might have some chance of detecting who cast on them. If I'm nuts, let me know, but perhaps this might help. (Ok, I already know I'm nuts. But it might help anyway?) -Dee. -------------------------- Message 3835 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Jun 26 00:40:16 1998 EDT From: Mercury (#16576) To: *Chat (#5391) Shut the fuck up. -------------------------- Message 3836 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Fri Jun 26 00:40:59 1998 EDT From: Rathe (#14172) To: *Chat (#5391) Need the names of angels that sinned/got their booties kicked outta heaven. This story came up recently, so I'll post it since there was a police discussion. One fine day, I was driving home from the PA faire in Dad's car. I'd got my liscence about... oh... 2 months before that, and since I'm a paranoid FOOL, I would always stick to the exact speed limit, you name it. I was a walking encyclopedia of the Driver's Manual. So... I'm moving along, merrily, coming away from a light, not even _at_ the speed limit yet, and an old couple in a van pulls out of a parking lot at mach 10 and crashes into the side of the car. Major damage to Dad's car. None to the van from hell. So I pull into the parking lot (barely) and get out of the car to look it over. The old man comes screaming out of his car, "How the hell fast were you going, young lady?!?!?!" To which I answered, deadpan, "25." The pathetic truth. Have you ever seen someone turn red as though they're about to explode, then just deflate? He did. Anyway... We call the police to come to the scene. Three times. They flat out refused to come to the scene of the accident, since. in their words, "No ambulance was needed." Despite the fact that the car I was driving, which they were told, couldn't safely be driven another 100 yards. A year passes. I'm headed for the faire rehearsal. We're doing, *gasp* 52 in a 50 zone, no construction, downhill. $135 ticket from -- guess who! The same group that refused to come to the scene of the accident. I'm pathetic when it comes to authority figures. Pathetic. I just shut up, listen, and answer what I'm told. He wasn't exactly 'nice' either. Until that ticket, that amount, and that division. After I blinked at the cost, I asked him, "Gap State Police? Mmmmhmmm. Is this the same Gap State Police that refused to come to the scene of an accident I was in not a year ago, in this same car, after being called three times?" You know that reaction I explained about the old man? Same thing. Then he turned tail and _RAN_ back to his car. And... about metermaids: All I'm going to say is this. I lived in an area where you could park free after 5pm, through 8am. At 8am, it went to meters. I just loved the morning when my clock, the town clock, and everything else said it was 7:45, and there was already a ticket on my car marked 8:03. -------------------------- Message 3863 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Jun 27 19:43:24 1998 EDT From: Dante (#10660) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: For those Win 98 users. For a frsh install if you have only the upgrade, all you need to do is install it as normal, on a empty HDD of course, during the install it'll ask you to put either a WIn 3.1 disk in a drive, or a WIN 95 CD for about 30 seconds while it checks it. After that it's install as normal, fresh and clean which I usually reccomend. Overall however you don't need WIn 98, since it's a pain in the ass, it just forces you to use WIn stuff for the internet, you can't delete MSiE of course, and all the upgrade, WinTV is of course run through MSiE, cute eh? Anyway thats enough info that you need, any questions I'll try to answer but I make no claims of computer intelligence. ;) -------------------------- Message 3864 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Jun 27 20:25:03 1998 EDT From: Tarla (#18104) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: On the cops thing.... Just be glad you are dealing with american cops. Being a mother I occassionaly hang around the Seseme Street parents posting boards and one of the women who posts there regularly recently posted a long diatrabe about the cops where she lives... somewhere outside the US is all I know though I think she's in Mexico or Central America.... Story goes like this: It seems that her grandmother recently died and in her country they hold a week long wake efore the burial... seems to me the body would begin to stink but hey... that's not the point here. Anyway, on the final day of the wake she was on her way to it, running late in bumper to bumper traffic. The limo driver, being stuck in an intersection as the light was turning yellow, procede through it as the traffic in front of him allowed. Shortly thereafter a cop pulled them over, confiscated the driver's license for 'beating the light', told this lady he didn't give a shit about her grandmothers wake and forced them to follow him back three blocks to the roadside station they had set up (to my understanding these little places are rather like American covered bus stops). When they got to the place they were accosted by, not one but THREE cops who proceeded to extort $500 out of this woman (all the money she had on her, meant for flowers for the funeral) under threat of completely suspending the drivers license. No ticket, nothing. Just plain extorsion. So be glad yer here and not there. -------------------------- Message 3865 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Sat Jun 27 22:24:54 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: Cops American Cops are assholes just like the other countries.. Last month, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office began registering the name to SyNet Inc. whose founder claims he has been using the name since 1994 (the firm is now defunct, after legal bills in the tens of thousands of dollars fighting Microsoft on this issue). It had bombs that would go off, but the heroes turned them off seconds before they could blow up. How did the crew on the rig in the beginning of the movie all of a sudden get to their respective homes in 18 hours to be chased down by the Feds for the mission? Why did Steven Tyler waste favors on getting his daughter screentime, which consisted mostly of looking thoughtfully out in the distance? How come the asteroid looked more like a soundstage than an asteroid? Why did their asteroid rovers have machine guns??? Were they expecting Russians on the asteroid who would thwart the plan for saving the earth? Was there a plot about aliens guiding the asteroid to earth to destroy it? And in the middle of all this crap, there were slow motion shots of American flags and midwesterners screwing cattle while Aerosmith blared in the background and lots of blinky lights. The good thing I can say about the movie is that I saw it for 1/2 price and the theater was air conditioned. Oh, I wasn't expecting Armageddon to be anything deep or thought provoking, but it wasn't even a fun movie. It was just loud with lots of blinky lights. -------------------------- Message 3931 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Jul 6 14:22:41 1998 EDT From: Zykk (#21824) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Penalties... As far as I am concerned... the only thing to complain about when it comes to the X-files movie is that I had to pay $7.00 to see it. There wasn't much in the movie (other than the parts that got a bit too grose) that couldn't have been done in multipart TV episode. I should've guessed it was gonna be a ripoff, but I figured what the hell. I got alot of new parts for it, and then I reached the point of near completion, about to drop it into my car. A friend of ours shows up, wants to compression test it before we put it in. Sure, harmless eh? Well, we do the test, then it shows that the 350 has three dead cylinders and the other five are dying. Now, after spending hundreds of bucks in gaskets, paint, etc etc, I now have to disassemble the engine, hone out the cylinders, get the heads reworked, and possibly get the block vatted/baked. Amazing how well that rebuild was eh? *heh* Ake -------------------------- Message 3984 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Jul 16 00:59:47 1998 EDT From: Vertemis (#23360) To: *Chat (#5391) Looking for... Ok... sooooo.... say I actually find some time to RP and am in an IC area and suddenly I hear my son go "bonk" on his head because he recently learned to climb over his crib rail and I have to bolt to make sure he didn't fracture his skull on the cement floor that's under the cheap ass thin carpeting in my apartment. What happens? I don't have time to walk to an empty room @ooc and @home just in case someone comes along ICly. So what happens if I @ooc, as I would normally do before this change? Do I get whisked away to an OOC area? If so, dandy, though it would be nice if that function would whisk you back to the same spot when you @ic'd within a set time period. Or does @home now function if you're IC? Though that has some obvious twink problems. My main concern is that, in an emergency situation players have no recourse but to risk being attacked/killed/looted while they stop that grease fire in the kitchen/rescue the baby from it's own nievate/stop the dog from eating the cat alive/stop the cat from eating the goldfish or whatever. This is the same concern I voiced when this issue was first discussed. Maybe I missed the answers being posted... in which case I apologize and request that somebody repost them so I know. -------------------------- Message 3989 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Jul 16 10:36:16 1998 EDT From: Quinn (#2) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: IC/OOC Your concern is a valid one. Your only recourse now in such emergency situations is to find an empty room and @ooc. However, if it's really an *emergency*, just leave the damn MOO and take care of it! Regardless, I'm gonna talk to Janus about corifying his @ooc/@ic feature which moves users to an OOC area when they go out of character, and their last IC location when they go back. That should fix the major problems with the shift. -------------------------- Message 3990 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Jul 16 13:02:40 1998 EDT From: Spiral (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: *scream! Just because someone is forced to walk around ICly in the R/T and other areas doesn't mean that they are actually going to rp more. The people that want to rp will and those that don't won't. Why should everyone have to roleplay anyways? And like mentioned before, what if something important comes up in real life? Like someone is at my door, stove is on fire, etc? It's a pain in the ass to have to find a place where you can go @ooc so that your character doesn't get destroyed while you tackle your real life matters. If your stats are maxed, weapons are pointless because all they're there for is to kill anything that comes within 10 feet of you, not to mention gain crystals faster. As a character who does not have maximum stats, a weapon would be a nice addition to fighting to build stats, to survive against all kinds of onslaughts, among other things. This is really the point I'm getting at, but if people want to keep telling me not to buy weapons, that's okay. It's advice, which I respect, from long-time players who I should respect, and for the most part I do. However, on *chat I was merely asking for weapons, not the pros and cons. --The slightly perturbed lil' Carter --------------------------
