I'd like to say that the reason I even thought this whole thing up was brought on by a mere subject or character generation. Simply in no other game I have played is there such a rediculous state of imbalance when beginning. I'd like someone who has played in a RPG to show me how even a starting character in any gaming system starts so rediculously weak and puny. You say potential makes the difference? Excuse me but all that it does is maybe add a few points in shock that help to keep the newbie who is sparred, or hunting concious, otherwise the rest is increased rather easily. On to my next rant however, coded chargen is dire, I really think if we want new blood we need it. I know how when I log in to a new place I know my way around MOO's and meld my char into some semblence of ones I have on other MOO's. So aside from the fact it's 4 AM and I'm an insomniac whats my point? Well just that we need fresh blood here, and I don't want to come across the wrong ways but in many ways this MOO reminds me of High School. it's clicky, as in if your in a in group then you can excell, get help etc. Those who aren't in the click are excluded and thus unwelcome. I personally think thats how new player looks when they come here, thats just my opinion and as for how to fix it, I think that diversity and new players can solve that. When they come and enjoy it they bring a friend, and the friend brings a friend until we have a raving legion of goonies and opposing factions muhahahahahaha! Okay I better stop now, too much spam for those who want to read this. -------------------------- Message 2796 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Apr 23 09:22:17 1998 EDT From: Lykaj (#6068) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: stats & Death This is just my humble oppinion. *Death* is supposed to *Suck* If death does not suck, what does? If it takes you 100 times of getting killed to relize that? Your not all that bright and should sit down before you get too dizzy. Starting out from scratch is the way you learn that death sucks. You should be scared of mini rex or raptor when you start out. That is how you learn the game. Everyone seems to want really cool big bad monsters and critters to have to hunt down and kill. But at no risk to themselves. Gee..how thrilling that is. This place is supposed to be scary. Its supposed to be harsh. Only the tough survive. Not just in stats but in RP as well. You get rid of the harshness of the game and you are left without a challenge. And that goes for newbies as well. If your a smart newbie, you start out on jizo...work you way up to handling other areas. If your not so smart..then too bad. Die. But shutup and die. If you take the time and play with newer players you will find that most of them can rp as well, or better then some of the older players here. Giving them stats or atts is not a way to attract players. Include them, offer them positions in your army of craziness. Give them weapons you don't use or crystals you have laying around. If you feel you are being excluded from rp because "clicky" groups, find those of us who do not partake in such behavior. Also, there really are not that many highstated players as you might think, nor people running around killing and looting. Don't be afraid to come out and play, if you feel like you are being abused over and over by a higherstat player, page em, ask em to keep it emoted. If they don't respond to your wishes, then find other players to rp with. As far as dying while hunting, find someone to hunt with. Its more fun and the odds are more in your favor. One of my alts are usually about on the wheel or in the sewers, if you see me ask me icly if you can join in and share the crystals, I doubt very much that I would say no. -------------------------- Message 2798 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Apr 23 11:48:37 1998 EDT From: Quinn (#2) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: newbies, class choices Newbies shouldn't be able to get into the more advanced clases, such as soulmechs and dragonriders. Let them use their first character for exploratory purposes. As for recombs -- I hope to finish a more general @species interface, which can be used along with @reroll to choose a species up-front. The likely cost of choosing a non-human species will likely be major penalties to willpower, and perhaps less starting points to distribute amongst skills. In case we haven't been through the justification before: recombs ARE part animal, and animals are, well, animalistic. Governed by instinct rather than will. Recombs aren't permitted, or cabable of, reproduction. So why in hell should they have a sex? Also, another arguement against recombs being sex addicts is very simply. Recombs are modified animals. The only animals who exist in a constant state of "heat" are humans and goats. All other animals go through variying periods of total disinterest in sex. They also ONLY mate to reproduce... and since recombs cant reproduce... well... you know where this is going don't you? Just because they are incapable of reproduction and perhaps cant perform up to snuff, doesnt mean they wouldnt have sex. This opinion stems from seeing male dogs that have been nuetered, who have no sense of what sex is, hump some poor mans leg. Ive seen these same dogs, who are incapable of reproduction try to hump the same sex animal. Hell, ive seen my female duck hop on another female duck and try to have some fun (poor poor Crackers, forever scarred). I dont think instinct is something that gets taken away from an animal, its in their genetic makeup, unlike a learned action. Fixing a dog kills alot of his need to wander, but ive yet to see it stop him from smelling a crotch or humping something, and dont even try to tell me that my stuffed teddy bear smelled like a female dog in heat. I could get into the control issue with animals and how it can be used as a sign of dominance, but I'll let ya all think on that one yourself. Sex is a lot more than reproduction and feeling good. Look at people at the many reasons we have it, alot of times with hidden issues that we havent worked out. Control being just one. just my 'less than .02 Canadian cents ME! Trading of equipment/armor/crystals/information between alts. Letting more than one person share a character _for_purposes_other_than_role-play (letting someone log in your character to spar for you (or with another of your alts), or hunt for you). Abuse of bugs in the system. Alt-healing/other interactions. Use of OOC/priveledged information (GM-info, OOC knowledge, etc.) for IC gains. Also -- please consider the following (even if it only seems like it's humoring me): What is more important to you as a player -- that someone follows the spirit of a rule, or the letter of a rule? (This includes yourself.) What rules would you, as a part of the MOO, want to see instated, and how do you think you would go about making them work? If you do not want to respond publicly to this message (though please bear in mind, it is intended to provoke discussion,) you may moo-mail me directly -- HOWEVER -- what it sent to me privately on this matter _will_ be forwarded to GM lists and to Quinn. They probably shouldn't even know OF eachother, and certainly should not be related or share a common past. This of course goes along with equipment sharing, sparring, blah blah blah. -------------------------- Message 2851 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Apr 23 21:51:27 1998 EDT From: Perplexity (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Personal opinions... Alt-sparring: Cheat. Whether the character is under the same email address or not, many of us have more characters than the 2 'allowed'. It's still your character, if not a registered alt. Registration status of a character does not make it any less your character. Letting more than one person share a character: First off, for RP purposes, this will cause extreme lack of consistency. In the past, if a character was given from one player to another, many times a post has been made to the effect, and that change is PERMANENT. Why? Because of one, simple thing: Let's say one of those people abused code, or cheated in some way. The two or more players of that character could infinately go back and forth saying, 'No, it was the other guy, not me' and the matter will never be resolved. Many players also have personal OOC conversations with thier characters, and may not wish to share those feelings/thoughts with anyone other than the person that they believe to be playing the character. Either way, people are going to use a shared character in ways that will negatively affect the MOO. Trading equipment/etc. between alts: A cheat. Why else do we have game 'alt' around? Read game alt. Memories aren't coded, but 'toys' etc. are. Trading off coded items is alot more traceable and enforceable than anything RPed ever could be. Letting more than one person share a character for purposes other than RP: A definate no no. This is a cheap way of trying to allow one alt to spar with another, even if they are not official 'alts' according to the player database. The player database is the _code_, not the rule that states that alts will not interact. If you play 28 characters, every last one of those characters should be considered to be one of your alts, and that is the point. Letting someone else log that character in soi that you can not only get around the player database alt registry, but the site-based alt-sparring preventive code that is in place is NOT, in my opinion, legal -- whether it is done through giving your character to someone else temporarily, or through the use of a shell account. THE CODE WAS PUT IN PLACE FOR A REASON. That _reason_ is still fully valid, even if you have found a way to work your way around the code. The code would never have been put into place if the _reason_ did not exist. Abuse of bugs in the system: I think we all know that this is a no no. This one falls, in my mind, right in with people who use OOC verbs (@home, @go, etc.) to get out of IC situations. It's a filthy, steeeeeenking cheat in my mind. Alt-healing/other interactions: Read game alt. Interactions between alts is a cheat. In my mind, any character you play is one of your alts, even if it is a shared character and you are not at that time playing with that character, no matter what the player database says. Abuse of OOC verbs/priviledges/information: A bad thing. Right up there with abuse of code. Please don't do it. It's JUST A GAME, folks. Play it fair. Looking for loopholes isn't playing the game the wy it was meant to be played. If people paid half as much attention to the spirit of the game, and the spirit of the rules that have been put into place as they did to the 'letter of the law', we wouldn't have problems lke these, where people feel entitled to KNOWINGLY work around the code that is in place to violate the rules, then state that simply because it is not stated that 'there is a specific rule against ', it is allowed, and of that I am pretty certain. It not only shows a disrespect for the MOO, but for all the other players on the MOO who follow not only the letter of the rules, but the meaning and intention behind those rules. Are the people who do this really so wrapped up in their own gain that they don't care about the rest of the game? If they are -- honestly, I would suggest a single-player game somewhere. There shouldn't have to be a statement that says "Walking face first into a brick wall studded with nails and broken glass is bad for you" when "Watch where you're walking" should suffice. -me. -------------------------- Message 2852 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Apr 23 22:48:36 1998 EDT From: Kynwal (#20497) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Recombs The personal theory of choice (and the only one that makes much sense as we know science right now) is that Recombs DO have human DNA. No, what it does mean is he lives in Portland, I live in Oly a phone call is long distance its much cheaper to converse on the moo. If it really bothers you Dee then remove the 2 points Clayson received from sparring that evening. The matter brought the problem to people's attention, nothing more. I think it's important here to clarify that people are interested in knowing what you all feel is or is not a cheat, and what you'd do about it. This is not 'Dee on some personal rampage' against _anyone_. Granted, there was an instance in which I found someone doing something that violates the alt rules, and when asked to quote the letter of the rule, couldn't -- which caused some discussion among the staff as to 'how specific we need to get'. The point is -- people should be responsible. There wouldn't be code in place to prevent one of the characters that you play, (legal alt according to the DB or not) if alt-sparring was considered a good thing. Should the staff have to draw up some sort of sick constitution of rules and abuses, with eventualities thrown in for shell accounts, shared characters, what to do in case of code abuses? That would be a silly waste of time when it's just as easy to say, "All of the characters you play are your alts, be it 2 or 200. Alts do not interact." The personal note: I find it really kinda sick and sad that people can't just play the game without trying to find loopholes in rules and code to exploit. It's a GAME, and while you may be thinking, 'then why do you care, Dee?' -- let me tell you. People who cheat make the game less fun for everyone. That's why. And before anyone says that it isn't hurting anyone: Look at the fact that sparring times are more spread out now: Do you like that? Probably not if you're a major sparrer. Do you think it's fair that somebody else gets to spend half the time doing it as you do, because they are doing a couple characters at once? Hey, if everyone could do it, it'd be cool, right? If there wasn't a rule against alt-sparring and code in place to prevent it? But guess what? There is a rule. There is code. So does it seem fair that one person finds loopholes in the code to exploit it? Probably not. Look at why the people who abuse the system do it: Is it to make things more fun for everyone? Of course not. It's purely for them, because they feel they are better than the rules. Personally, I really think that if someone can't follow some simple rules, they have no respect for the MOO or any of the people on it. There's nothing wrong with not giving a damn about anyone else. Nobody says you have to care. Just don't expect people to like it if you don't follow the rules of the game. Think about it: What causes the most screaming around here? It's when one person gets something that everyone else didn't have the equal chance of getting. NPCs are the _perfect_ example: "You didn't spar. You don't deserve stats." Translation: "You didn't follow the rules and earn what you have fairly, like everyone else, therefore, you shouldn't be allowed to have it." Anyway, I have more artwork to do. I USED to belong to CDHQ - a music club thingy that I would occasionally buy CDs from for cheap - and eventually I became broke/kept forgetting to pay my bill. So they would, every month, send me an increasingly nasty letter. Finally, last month, I paid my bill and wrote CANCEL MEMBERSHIP in really big dark letters on the statement. So what do i get in the mail today? A little letter from them about what a 'valued member' i was and how, me being such a stellar member and all, they felt they couldn't let me go. So hey! They'll send me 12 CDs (I only have to pay shipping and handling) if I'll just promise to buy 5 more. Ok.. so here's what puzzles me... I _wasn't_ a good member, not at all.. Love is: ..knowing that the truth is important, and someone trusts their partner enough to be able to tell them the truth without just trying to spare my feelings and hide whatever happened -- the love part is accepting the truth when it's told to you. ..feeling like the person you are with is a true partner, not a trophy, handy person who's around for parties, sex, or borrowing money, or anything else. ..making a promise and keeping it, even though it might be hard to do. ..someone who doesn't snicker at all the things you thought you would like to do for a living, and doesn't roll their eyes whenever you come up with a new one. ..someone who doesn't mind artwork scattered all over the house, and won't mind 5 foot panes of glass all over the living room over the summer. ..someone who doesn't immediately berate me for having a Mac, and can be enough of a grown-up to realize that I, like every sane consumer in the universe, buy what suits my needs, not what everybody else buys. They respect that this saved me from things like the Macarena and New Kids on the Block, too. Turn Ons: A respectable vocabulary -- someone who can carry on a conversation with words of more than two syllables. Shoulders and eyes. Someone who can think creatively -- in almost any form. People who don't look at my work and instantly assume that I am either: A satanist, a lesbian, completely insane, stupid, trying to impress someone, a danger to myself and others, or any combination of the above. People get bonus points for understanding elements of the symbolism I like to use. People who have the maturity to look past the fact that I am not physically perfect, and believe that there are more important things in life than my chest, or matching hips. Turn Offs: People who look at me with that completely 'Duh'/vacant/empty/nothing-going-on-behind-the-eyes expression when I say or do something. Anyone who refuses to think for themselves, and just goes along with popular opinion because they don't want to bother to find out on their own. Hypocrites. Anyone who thinks they are God's gift and finds it 'cute' to try and make other people feel bad in order to make themselves seem 'bigger' or 'better'. They only look one hell of alot smaller to me after they pull this one. Clingy people. I like my space. -me. -------------------------- Message 2965 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 28 22:20:49 1998 EDT From: Abe (#21180) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: smoke and infrared glasses the lenses are just red-colored glass i think, and you have to have red light... its somewhere in the infrared light spectrum and cant be seen in the dark that well (red light) , where the red lenses come in.... the lenses help you see the red light, effectively also able to see in the dark better... (im sure thats how it works...) -------------------------- Message 2966 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 28 22:31:20 1998 EDT From: Skywalker (#6644) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: IR I'd imagine IR goggles would be a bit more complicated than that. A filter capable of allowing us to "see" in the infrared part of the spectrum is probably manufactured by some high-tech process. As far as seeing in the dark, that's night vision and something totally different. IR registers heat signatures so the only thing you'd see with those on are objects that are emitting enough heat to register... -------------------------- Message 2967 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 28 22:32:01 1998 EDT From: Skywalker (#6644) To: *Chat (#5391) But hey, if you want to walk around like Elton John with red plastic over your eyes, be my guest. -------------------------- Message 2968 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 28 23:11:23 1998 EDT From: Janus (#3597) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Re: IR http://www.infrared.com/history.html It seems the IR viewer just amplify the IR 'light' (and well switch it to a visit part of the spectrum). By working, I mean things you wear that actually let you see in a dark room. But, since there are only a few rooms out there that are actually 'dark' at any times, I doubt anybody's going to code them anytime soon. Oh, and I prefer the demon powered models myself. -------------------------- Message 2972 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 28 23:20:56 1998 EDT From: Devon (#23970) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: More Darkness, catacombs, underground, and dark mazes.
