The problem (as I see it) currently is that there are a vast number of mages running around, with very little to actually differentiate them. This is to be expected in any large population class I suppose, but I'm of the opinion that the other classes deserve new players as much if not more than the mage class does at the moment and hopefully changes will be made in the near future which will aid in making them a bit more attractive to new players. Also let me point out that I would not suggest that any new players leap into a class without RPing for a while to make sure exactly what they want. I'm hoping that the Mechers and DRs will allow some form of lower-level entry into the class, allowing newer players to get their feet wet as it were, without the powers and responsibilities of more advanced players. I mean, how does Morlith get by as it is, with just riders up there? I sure as hell don't see them in the kitchen, or scrubbing the stone. Perhaps the allowance of new players who serve some kind of duration as servants with the possibility of ultimately becoming riders if they are chosen in ceremony. A similar scenario could also work for areas of the Mechs. It strikes me as difficult to get into either of those classes (for some valid reasons), but I also don't think that players who have interest in the class should either get a mech/dragon or go elsewhere. There is room for peons in those hoping to advance, methinks. -Stalinger P.S. I think this is as spammy as I get. -------------------------- Message 2723 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 22 00:44:20 1998 EDT From: Skywalker (#6644) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: That's pathetic You know, I've been doing some calculating. I don't know what the aliens did to my real father, honest. Should I feel guilty for taking this offer from the pod person who replaced him, or no?) The true irony here? This man won't invest $300 to upgrade my current system, but he'd be spending alot for a new system (when you include stylus, printer, and scanner). Now... what really scares me? I'm pretty sure he's only agreeing to this because I told him I would be willing to hook up my current computer in such a way that he can play around on the internet while I'm in school, or working downstairs, so it wouldn't be interfering with the graphics work I'd be doing. (I love the extra irony here, since for years he's been telling me that the 'net as a whole is a waste of time.) I've told the man that for about $650 he can get himself a nice used system that'll get him connected to the net. For $1000, he can get a really nice one -- one I can even set up for him and teach him how to use. He thought this was far too much. Now -- even when you look at $1000 + $300, it doesn't come anywhere close to what he'd be investing in the new system, unless my math is way off. Bear in mind, folks, I'm not bitching here, I'm just _REALLY_ confused, so if any parent savvy people out there even begin to understand this one, please clue me in. I'm sure you would have loved it as a Newbie to have higher starting stats, wouldn't you? Hell, wouldn't ANYONE? As Quinn has stated MANY times, this MOO is here for _EVERYONE_ to enjoy, and if someone can't enjoy this place because they get killed every time they try to become better, then they arn't having fun, and therefore its Quinn's job to do something about that. Which could be raising of newbie stats. Again, i'll say this, I think its a good idea, and would help out the MOO as far as active population goes. -------------------------- Message 2743 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 22 18:46:53 1998 EDT From: Akeashar (#20348) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Granted The people before Dante's idea would probably not get recompensation for the newbie's stats.. and we all know Dante is more than willing to get your stats to average if you ask him.. I honestly think it'd be a decent idea, myself. I would like to see a little more "classes" or "groups" made as well, be it Wiz approved or not (depending on what kinda class..), I think Coreen had a mage subgroup thing, and Etra had the Bards, Rathe was asking for help, Lykaj is looking for SG people I believe.. Rand's got his knights group, and heck, mebbe when I can bug Quinn to get SB linked, I'll hire some people. Now, I know some of you have some concerns: 1) Why do the newbies get set stats from the beginning and not me? >> Well, I would think to grab their interest in this game.. I'm sure being stuck in the midrealm everytime you get swung at by a Mini-rex isn't much fun, and People lose interest in the game very soon. 2) What kinda stats would they get? >> I would think whatever would be able to dodge a mini-raptor or Mini-rex. Don't make them super-statted, and don't understat them. Coded Chargen I believe we have been planning on this for a while, but what, with the classes.. err, I mean groups around, and with it so difficult to manipulate ones person into an actual classification during chargen (You don't see CS doing that). Perhaps you should just add and remove stats, then exit out (after setting a plan, mind you), and then later on, give them 30 days (unless GM alt), and then let them choose what class they'll be in. "... this MOO is here for _EVERYONE_ to enjoy..." Now, that statement isn't very logical. Someone will always be complaining, feelings will always be hurt by another.. even though this is a "game", it does NOT mean it isn't similar to Real Life. Now, going back to the chargen deal (which entwines with this quote), The people would atleast have SOME interest in this place at the beginning, and they can enjoy it. Sure, some people think this place should be all RP, or some say it should be all CODED COMBAT, DIE DIE DIE, KILL KILL KILL, drink blood nonsense. Both you are correct.. and both of you are wrong. Nothing wrong with coded combat, nothing wrong with RPing. Some people just want to log on, spar a few, then go out onto the wheel and behead people to relieve stress, or just to make yourself feel good. The same could be said for the RPers. They want to log on, check mail, check @rp, and then go and RP. Nothing wrong with that either. You got to have the distinction between RP/CODED/SOCIAL, and you can't remove one without losing people. Thankee. Dante idea is not bad, BUT WE CAN DO MUCH BETTER. The wiz staff is busy implementing a system that will be fair for all and distributes power equally amongst Ghostwheel comrades. You got it, we are going to code STATS COMMUNISM. We believe the Maxist model is very good, even if it's implementation in the real world is not practical given the human nature (greed and lust for power; the communist block proved it well). HOWEVER if the system could be coded in an IMPARTIAL WAY, then it would work like a charm. And, you got it, we are going to code it that way: IMPARTIAL. How will it affect your character? Easy, if you are a big fat stat capitalist you lose, if you are a poor overlooted and overkilled newbie you win. Stats from the rich will be given to the poors so that everyone get the same stats. Also when someone gain experience (either by sparing, playing, etc...) that experience will be shared amongst ALL of Ghostwheel Comrades. Enjoy! Janus P.S. I'm also going to code the Tcheka (aka Thought Police) to dispose of the traitors in the system. -------------------------- Message 2747 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 22 19:08:15 1998 EDT From: Sterno (#21938) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Stats How about just upping the number of potential points you get at CharGen? Or just getting rid of them? 100 potential points are as good as useless, other than raising your ElecTech to 5 since it can't be sparred. Stats are inflating, perhaps potential points should rise along with it? That being said, I might as well add... don't go to the trouble. It only takes a few hours of sparring to hit average, and everyone is getting really bent out of shape about the idea of raising stats. Those of us who think newbies should have higher stats can just spend a few hours sparring them, and everyone's happy. Enough rambling from me. I think that it may have been said before... but stats aren't the #1 most necessary thing around here anyway. Both of my main chars have REALLY bad stats, but I can hunt when I want to and I don't die every 5 minutes. Since this MOO is so RP oriented, a player has to learn to take everything in stride. If, during RP, you're going to play with fire (or overtly taunt a Rathe) then it's likely you're going to get burned. And everyone bites the dust a time or two -- you gotta learn from your mistakes. If you haven't the patience to mature your RP then you're not going to have a good time here anyway. And as for stat boosting for 'newbies'... I don't think it's a bad idea, but really, I'm mostly impartial to it. I don't think we *all* need to be boosted (and Smoke, I think we all know that you can handle yourself without a 'present' from the wizzen... hell, even a newbie with a stat boost would not be likely to overpower you), but I don't particularly care about stats anyway so maybe I'm not the best to ask. And regardless of that, if I wanted my stats up (as I kind of do for Melira, since she made magistra) I'd go spar with a friend. *shrug* What's the big deal and why is there so much whining starting up again? -Jess/Etra/Lira .. who's kind of in a down mood anyway / -------------------------- Message 2750 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 22 19:40:07 1998 EDT From: Lykaj (#6068) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Council What happend with that thing anyway? If people were all universally given 100 new points to their bladed, then we'd be exactly as we are now -- except that it would be a BIGGER bonus for players who already have high stats, who would have had to wait hours and hours to get that 100 points. If something like that was done (from how I interpret DTs posts, in any case) it would be to help NEW players who don't want to be killed over and over and lose interest. I don't know how many times I have said this, but it is true: While death and harsh aspects of reality may be a major part of this game, nobody plays a game they are always going to lose out in. They are going to lose interest sooner or later if it seems to them that _nothing_ will ever happen for them that is 'positive'. Yes, it can be fun to RP losing -- but the 100th time in a row without a win, well, it's discouraging. Death is nasty -- we all know it. Some of the people screaming the loudest for their rights to kill and loot anything and everything under the sun are also the people who are complaining that death is too harsh -- because of the damage they do to the stats of the people they kill and loot? No. Because of damage to their _own_ stats when it comes time to pay the piper and their victims team up and fight back. This, I have to say, proves that these people apparently don't like the effects of being killed or looted either, doesn't it? There's nothing wrong with killing, looting, stats, sparring -- just bear in mind -- if you always get the short end of the stick, you're going to look for another tree to pull branches from -- and PLEASE do not complain when something you have done to another person which is legit by the rules is done to you in return. If you have the right to do it, SO DO THEY. The other point is this: GW is expanding. The player base has increased a great deal in just the year and a half span of time that I have been here. There is still only one Dante, no matter how many alts my dear may have scattered about. Yes, Dante will spar people -- but he's a person, folks. He has a right to go out there and play, too. I've pestered him to spar plenty myself -- but we, as a MOO, can't allow ourselves to rely on one person to spar everyone on the MOO up to average, c'mon now, that's not exactly fair to him, is it? There are more people out there now. There are fewer 'sparring resources' available to the players now than there were when I started, also. That's more players and less options. This equals something less than good, no? Not everyone knows about sparring. Is giving someone mediocre skills at chargen going to hurt ANY of the players that spar currently? No. Not in the least. Alot of the opposition to this idea is proposed by people who have high stats already. Seriously, folks... you have been around a great deal longer than these people, and had resources that they don't have now. What did it take you to get there? Not too long, I'd wager, if you sparred at all. Is this going to hurt you? No. It sounds alot like 'they are getting something I didn't', and I have to mention this: You had access to the boxers in Austin, perhaps the ahab on the Mount, maybe some others. They do not. There have been a hundred things that have come and gone in the period of time that you have been here, that you have been able to take advantage of, that no longer exist -- things they cannot now use for their own betterment. You were here and they weren't, so that's their tough luck, right? Sheesh. They're here for fun, just like you are. Again -- how much fun is it to get killed a zillion times a day for someone else's amusement? Not much. Ok -- maybe it's fun for the killER, but c'mon now. These people can add something to our world here, and it seems that the opinion is 'screw 'em because I didn't get that perk myself', which is, well, pathetically selfish. Wouldn't it be more of a challenge for you to kill someone with 100 bladed than 0? How much fun is it to get into a fight you already know the outcome of? Bleah -- boring. Wouldn't it be more fun to see what kind of character that person becomes? They could be your new lackey, apprentice, lover, teacher -- they could add something, but many are discouraged by the 'constant loss' issue. I repeat: It ceases to become fun when all you ever get is the shit end of the stick. -me. -------------------------- Message 2754 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 22 20:53:03 1998 EDT From: Perplexity (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Reminder Alt interaction is against the rules. Hurray for the end of school. -------------------------- Message 2787 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 22 23:00:40 1998 EDT From: Kynwal (#20497) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Pts for newbies Personally, coming from someone (besides Stal) who has been here almost forever. :P And (unlike Stal who is way too busy in RL. ;) ) someone who has played a character many times. Here are my thoughts, read em and chew on your collective keyboards. 100 pot. It is fine the way it is. If a new player has some brains, they might put a few pts in dodge. Worked for me. I have a couple -just- above 100 bladed characters. A 6 dodge is almost sufficient to dodge mini's. If one uses a modicum of brains. Hell they only attack for every attack you do on them. Giving new players stats to make them stay here to play. What a tub of bat guano. In about a week, with no real sparring, I was running around the wheel. Getting hit by cainid's but handling the Executioner birds (which are easier then rous' btw). Giving new players stats will not help someone stay, they will just get into deeper troubles by not learning like the rest of had to do. I knew when I couldn't handle a little dinosaur that a large dog would be major problems. And what Stal said is correct, hardly anyone 'kills' these days. They use @eject and take the cheap way out. So we've had a little bitching about stats so far. Lovely. Its been made quite clear that newbies have the ability to get good enough to hunt. Lovely. How about players? There's also quite a bit of whining about high stats, talk of resets.. There always is. Some people think there are too many evil chars. We need to have a little talk about style. You see, there are two kinds of fear one experiences on an RPG MOO. Some people, those who are not very experienced RPGers, or just idiots, only experience the first kind of fear. I would hope that the majority thinks of both types. 1) Coded. Oh-fuck-Darkhawk's-Gonna-kick-my-ass-and-loot me. This was the most common, say, a year ago. I know when I was a newbie, I was terrified for my life.. But over time, even as I sparred, I began to see other characters. Axelle, Zillah.. Now, I was actually quite aware that these characters were near statless next to me.. Most people realized that they were lowstats. But have you ever seen joe newbie walk into the lounge, look at Axelle, and decide to attack her? No. Why? Style. Thats right. People watch someone, and they (gasp) think in an IC way. I fuck with this person, god knows what could happen. Its not a matter of how easily they could codedly kill you, but what the consequences might be for their character. Axelle won't brain you with a quarterstaff, but there's a good chance she'd curse you and have you a stumbling zombie for the next few months, one of those nifty electric collars around your neck as you served her midmorning tea. Bleh. Stats are a part of the game. RP is a part of the game. If you have any brains whatsoever, you take both into account. Extremists to one side or the other (Lets have no coded consequences or lets hunt and spar and kill and throw in some half assed emotes) will be shot. Stryfe is the same way. You have to walk the walk and talk the talk. And maybe you won't have to put up proof. -------------------------- Message 2791 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Apr 23 00:32:26 1998 EDT From: Stalinger (#657) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Ditto. Well put, Rathe. The thing that makes for interesting RP is interesting characters, not pissing contests over who has the highest bladed stat... -Stal P.S.
