No one wants to be good because it is futile to play a character that is just going to be killed and looted everytime he/she encounters a villan. And it is near impossible to gain the stats needed to kill an evil stat god. Another thing is, it seems odd that people can be good at everything. People shouldn't be able to the best mage/swordsman/blunt expert/archer/brawler in the game. That just doesn't happen. No one would have the time in a whole lifetime to practice all those skills enough to be the best at them. Maybe there could be some sort of random stat limits placed on a character evertime a character is made. Don't you think a forced reset is a cap? I don't see why we have to change everytime a newbie gets his/her nose bent out of shape. Its hard enough as it is to boost and keep the skills you have, more changes will just mean more disgruntled players. As far as players just learning certain skills, well that's crazy. Irl suppose you have chosen the field of Airplane Mechanic, this doesn't mean you cant learn to be a Pilot After you learn your skill you move on to another, and another...less you are brain dead, you learn new things everyday. I guess Im just tired of the changes, to me nothing has gotten any better. Not that things are bad, but the improvements have not brought around more rping players, if anything more and more people hide, in my opinion that is due the death penalties and the forced time limits on boosting. Everyone is so afraid of losing what takes so long to gain. I think you should just make the best of it. If you keep whining more rules and restrictions will no doubt come about and soon we will all be sitting around in our underwear picking our noses, posting about being bored and there is nobody to play with. -------------------------- Message 2413 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Mon Apr 13 16:37:58 1998 EDT From: Skywalker (#6644) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: post 2400 Hey, I resent that. You think nobody wants to be good and that any high-statted players are all evil? True, the players at the top are all evil, but that's not because they have the stats to do so, it's because of the character they choose to play. So who do we have around here that's "good" with high stats? Well, Skeeter. Dante too (to a degree I think). What about me? Sure, my .sheet may say "neutral", but anyone who's Sky's friend can tell you that he doesn't sit on his ass if he should jump into a situation. Just because you don't see white knights going out every day to battle forces of evil doesn't mean they're there. Perhaps ecru would be a better colour for these knights? But I digress. Point is, the stats don't determine the alignment of a player, it's the RL person behind the screen that does. And don't give me that crap that power corrupts 'cause it just isn't true. Oh, and don't bother asking about my stats. There aren't any in 4-digits, but it will suffice to say that they're, well, sufficient. Wiping stats will only make people work harder for stats, and less RP. That was proved last stat wipe. 2) this is an RP/Combat/Social MOO. yes, I know how the die hard RPers hate to get killed (myself included), what I'm trying to say is that basically, you can't wipe out the Combat side from the MOO or the RP side from the MOO without losing alot of people. (>> You will try to understand my semi-coherent thoughts. hee). 3) Spells: Yes they do lack a little in power (probably an understatement), and yes, they have been abused. So.. why not hack in something that when the spell is cast, a prop is set on the player or the spell, and E can't cast Eir spell until E's spell has worn out completely (finished the final message, given the damage, etc). Because basically, you can stack a ton of spells in a really, really short time. 4) Longinus: Not saying he was a bad idea as a character, just needed someone else (perhaps another member of the GM staff) to use him to his full advantage. 5) NPC vs. PC: Yes, the IC affect is the same, but the moment people see an NPC walk into the room, what do they think? OH MY GOD E'S GONNA KILL ME. A PC with that kinda stats isn't usually feared when they walk into the room (with exceptions from the Evil guys, who are feared all the time ICLy.) Looting isn't bad. You may not like it you may not do it but it's not bad it's part of the game. If a player decides to stand in the round room and kill every one who comes alnog becaouse he's in a homicidal rage that's his bussiness and he should be able to do it until somone icly decides it's enough and kills him. Kill him enough times and his stats will suffer enough that he won't be able to do it again for awhile. We all complain to much when it's really IC actions that should be speaking for us. This is going to refer to alot of posts, and since most people who read the other lists also read chat, it's gonna reference alot of posts to alot of lists. First: Sater commented that mages are too powerful. Well, first off, you spend almost twice as many CPs to become a mage as you do to become a subbie. That may not sound like a big deal, but it has some relevance. You get glare. It doesn't do all that much. The remainder of what is gained by being a mage must be gained through IC training and interaction. It's a great system so long as it isn't abused. You role-play with other mages, and hey... you just might get some benefits. Spells don't do as much damage, usually, as a blade can. As a matter of fact, testing, I found out that one of my characters can do more damage with one strike to the head with fists than she can with a fairly powerful spell. Also -- spells have a backlash chance. Yes, that means that if you miscast, you get wasted yourself. Blades don't do that. Any newbie can pick up a blade, too. You also don't get insanity from swinging a broadsword. While you can spar combat skills up fairly high, focus really only gets _so_ high. It just doesn't get any further. People have tried for months, it just doesn't happen. Second: This MOO is combat/RP/social. Take out any one aspect, and it's no longer what it was intended to be. Having any one disrupted by any other can be annoying, true. That just means that we, as players, need to respect the other people around. People have a right to use coded whenever they wish. People have a right to talk out of character whenever they wish. People have the right to role-play whenever they wish. Simple solution: Try to respect whatever is going on when you get to wherever you were going. Keeping OOC chatter to OOC areas would be nice, actually emoting something before blowing someone's head off would be nice, and not whining because your RP was disrupted because someone did choose to use the combat engine would be nice. Generally, being human, we're not always nice. 'Nice' isn't enforceable. Respect isn't either, but respecting other players should be something a little more common, and were it more common, these problems wouldn't crop up so often. (Note: I said _players_, not characters.) Third: There is/was a warded area under construction. It may need to be altered a little, however, since there is now a serious effort to move more towards the 'post-nuclear' aspect of the game rather than the 'high fantasy' aspect. A little reworking, and it might just work out, but I'll have to talk to the boss and the other GMs about how possible it is, and if they are still interested in having it be a part of the game world. The rest of this babble will be continued in the next post to not spam everyone completely to death. -me. -------------------------- Message 2441 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 14 06:43:46 1998 EDT From: Perplexity (#20542) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Stats... I really, honestly don't see a problem with people having stats. Catching up with the stat 'gods' is, indeed, alot harder than it used to be. There is always going to be a bigger bully on the block. I'm not sure who brought the point up, but the comment made that any 'good' character who tries to make it to 'god' level is going to get cut down rather quickly. As much as I'd like to say that it doesn't happen, I've seen it happen far too often. Here's something to think about: How many people do you know in the real world that you can say are 'good' or 'evil'? Not too many, right? Yes, there was Mother Theresa. Yes, there were alot of sick and twisted serial killers. But they don't make up the vast majority of the world, do they? Not hardly. Most people are 'neutral', Sky had a good point here. They have their own motivations. They have a history, they have reasons to do what they do. Think of it in shades of grey, to beat on a very overused metaphorical horse. Is a man evil if he kills? Is a man evil if he kills while at war? Is a man evil if he kills to protect his family? Is a man evil if he kills for the pleasure of killing? Different answers to those questions, probably. If you stop to think a little bit about why the character you're playing does what they do, it usually gets alot easier to play them, and they stop being 'good' or 'evil' very quickly. Now... coming out of that... if we limit what stats people can work up, people will come up with more and more elaborate reasons that they _should_ have the stats that they do. Now, take any ageless character, for example -- in 1000 years, let's say, don't you think someone would have the time to develop all manner of skills and abilities? All excuses aside, I found out just how odd all of this can get when once asked to write myself up as a character for a role-playing game, tabletop. At 21 (at the time), with no real exceptional abilities that I could think of offhand, and using the guidelines the system provided, I found that I had one hell of alot of skills -- from writing poetry to leatherworking to acting to disguise to swimming to a number of bizarre arcane lore skills. As well as a weapon proficiency with halberds (don't ask...). The number of points I would have had to use in that system to count for all of the skills I had learned was the equivalent of the number of points they would allocate to someone over 600 years old. Silly, isn't it? Maybe I just do too much -- but, the point is this -- we know how to do alot more than we sometimes give ourselves credit for. Using that example... and knowing how much better at a number of these things people in my age range are, just think a moment. People are really good at rationalizing. I could easily claim that because my character was a soldier for 30 years before he learned he was able to use magic, he should have weapons skills. Simple, isn't it? I could just as easily say that my recomb character, though bred to be a warlike creature, was sold as a bodyguard to a refined and wealthy couple, and spent her hours while not guarding her master studying his books on ancient architecture, and learned to be a great mechanic because of the principles contained therein. Character concept should, in essence, dictate the skills people take, but alot of that deals more with uncoded than coded skills in many cases. If by taking one path, you close off all others, the characters become very one-dimensional. No, nobody is good at everything. I'm a halfway decent artist, but when it came to physical skills, I was pretty screwed up (at the 'can almost walk and chew bubblegum at the same time' level). Not everyone is, however, like me. One of the people I go to school with works as a lifeguard, or for the park services during the summer. He's an excellent artist, but is also exceptional physically. Looking back to that sheet that I created for 'me' for that game a few years ago, it became pretty apparent that in the course of a lifetime, even a short and fairly unremarkable one, people do pick up on alot of things. You learn something new every day, as (I think) Smoke said. Think about it for a moment: In this world, just about everyone would realistically, ICly, need some level of combat skill, or have developed some other mechanism for dealing with the harshness of the world around them. I know for certain that if wild rabid radioactive coyotes could possibly leap into my tent in the middle of the night, and tear me to shreds, I would certainly know a little more about hand to hand combat, or I probably wouldn't be around any longer, Eagle or no Eagle. That's more than my quota of spam for one morning... pardon the rambling nature of this, but it's all being done on a short break from my evil task of 9 paintings in 9 days. (Someone shoot me for getting ambitious and deciding to make a medieval altarpiece styled screen for an assignment. Really. Shoot me. I obviously need it.) I get to play with power tools next (Look Ma! No hands!) so if I'm not back for a few days (and anyone notices or cares) please call my parents for orderly disposal of my body. If so, I leave all my art books to Ariadne, and all my clothing message files to Mulder. -me. -------------------------- Message 2442 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 14 09:09:20 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Danger Will Robinson!!!! 43 chat messages! Being a Mac guy I'm pretty clueless about PC hardware (well I know about the Pentium [Pro | II], AMD and Cyrix, but not much beside CPUs) So I'm looking for advice. I want a laptop because I move a lot (USA, Canada, Europe) so shipping a desktop machine around is a pain and it's expensive. I don't really need the laptop to play with in the plane (though that would be nice, but not a priority) i.e. the battery life length is not my primary concern. On the other hand good docking capabilities are a must (i.e. easy to plug an external monitor, keyboard and HD). Also a power supply that handle 110/220V is a MUST (if it's built-in the notebook that is.) I will use the machine for Java developement/testing and MOO hacking (and all the standard internet stuff)... oh yeah and play strategy games :) i.e. I will need to be able to load it with RAM, a fast processor wouldn't hurt but I don't care about the graphic/3D capabilities (I'm not going to use photoshop or play Quake.) I would like to have the possibility to make it dual boot on the internal HD with Linux and Win95, I would like to have the possibility to add an external HD on which I could install other OS (BeOS, Rhapsody, OS/2, whatever...) All advice/info/pointers are most welcome. How about... How about a bot bounty-hunter or vigilante force that tracks down and takes out PK's? I mean, in real life we have cops, FBI, etc. Why not in the RPG? Like in real life, stronger or more hunters could be sent in pursuit of the stronger villains. And like in real life, it may take a while for them to be found, and there will be a (small) chance that they can fight their way to freedom. That way you can kill all you want, and deal with the consequences later. Just like real life. It will be one less thing to arbitrate and regulate. Law enforcement too strict? --Lower the frequency of finding the villains. Law enforcement too lax? --Increase the frequency of finding the villains. Since we don't seem to have any pure heroes here, there can be a crystal bounty for those players that want to get to the villain first. -------------------------- Message 2452 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 14 12:46:43 1998 EDT From: Stalinger (#657) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Hrm.. 89 posts on *chat... starting to remember why I @unsubscribed once, long ago. Perp, if you wanted that message not to be spammy it woulda had to be about 5 messages - thank god it wasn't. *grin* 3. Mages. I don't really think it is worth arguing about the strength of classes at this point. Mages clearly have unequal benefits in proportion to other classes. While this advantage is not so clearly obvious as it used to be, given some stricter limitations it is the case and probably will remain as such until we have some active staff doing solid work on other classes. The reason the mage class is in the position is it is primarily just because it is more developed than the other classes. Of the others, I think only the DRs could really be considered completed (and maybe not even them) and the unfortunate state of affairs is that it is no fun to develop for a group of people who are never here. I coded the subbie engine first, and there were a rash of subbies, but the fundamental truth of it is that until there is something worth going underwater for, the only people who'll be down there are subbies, wandering around in empty space. Obviously, people are going to be more attracted to classes which offer more apparent benefits. We have a lot of mages at this point and I'm strongly considering putting a lock on new mages for a while in the hopes that we can get some interest in other classes now. We're almost to 300 in this class alone... -Stal P.S. Good, Evil. Can we get more subjective then those two words? I don't really think so. Might as well have an argument on religion. Because you won't ever win. There is no black and white (good and evil) its all shades of gray. Case in point: Stryfe. Sure he rides (and leads) a bunch of undead, bony dragons. But, as some people will attest, he has his own code of honor. A hint: Its a mixture of the Marines, Chivalry, and the Mafia. 2. Mages Time to drag in a new horse. This one has been beaten to dust. There are so many mages for a couple reasons. One, and this is one of the biggies, anyone can join. Can anyone be a DR? Nope. Seekers get doodly because anyone can join. The 'raisings', as we call it in the biz, are rare and require recommendations from other mages. If your trying to get to Adept, there is even a set limit allowed. Go figure. If anyone could be a DR, I am sure we would see an increase in people in that class. 3. Recombs The Recomb wiz is on 'vacation'. Nuff said. -------------------------- Message 2454 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 14 14:35:18 1998 EDT From: Red_Fang (#5907) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: re: good guys and bad guys Just wanted to point out that Red Fang is really a good guy, Honestly..... It seems that in all this discussion, several times it's been pointed out that no new places are being developed. Stal mentioned the emptiness of the Undersea, just to point out an example. And while I do think there are a lot of areas around here which go unexplored, I see his point. And having been doing some thinking on it, I think (and this is just my opinion - could actually be that I know very little about it) that getting Geo status around here seems a little intimidating. I, for one, can build - I can't code worth a crap and I know nothing about verbs & objects, but I have prog bits on several other MOOs just for the sake of building. So what's involved in getting there? And how selective is it? I've had a few ideas, and they don't seem (on the surface) to fit into the 'theme' fof the moo... like, say, I used to get really bored on other MOOs and build huge & complex mazes.. one thing that I think would work really well ehre (with gps units to reveal hidden doors, etc) but that doesn't seem to fit. Also, and this is just kind of a passing comment, but as far as DRs being 'done' as a class, I wouldn't necessarily say they are - we were in the middle of some changes which are on hiatus at the moment, and which I (for one) would like to see come to fruition. And it's true that, as a class, DRs are harder to join - but then again, you're given command of the puppet and they can wreak a lot of damage... not that magery can't - but you've got to have the char. stats to back it up if you're a mage.. and even Etra (weak as she is, because I never spar her) could kick some butt if she enlisted Luthe.. What would your answer be to the question, 'Why?' And on the other hand if the girl cooked it for the guy. 2) Why do men crawl out of the woodwork when you dont want them? I truly believe i will exterminate the next rodent who calls me, the reason why on question 3. 3) I hate hurting peoples feelings. Getting asked out leaves me uncomfortable, especially when i dont want to go, and especially when it starts happening on a regular basis. What is a nice way to say 'take a hike'? Perhaps a guy or two can answer this. These men are all nice, some rich, some good looking, some both, BUT I aint interested. I have enough trouble in RL at the moment, i dont need more. I learned a lesson today, but it took a real impact to prove a point. I was coming home from a boring day of classes, the normal route to get home. I stop behind a car. The music is high, the windows up (as it's freaking cold today). I look around while I wait for the car in front of me to turn through a dangerous no stop light intersection. The next thing I see is a body flying through the air, a sporty mountain bike following close behind. The biker slides on the rough pavement for approximately 15 feet. A white car, obviously the culprit, races beside me. I memorize the license plate number; thankfully, the car found a place to stop and got out. The biker gets up slowly, pulls his bike out of the busy intersection. The van in front of me moves on, I stop and ask teh guy if he's ok. He taps his head and smiles. He is ok, with the exception of a few bruises. The driver gives him his ID and phone number. I give the biker the same (in case he needs a witness) then he asks for a ride to work. The biker, a fellow classmate. I had no idea until he took of the helmet that saved his life. You see, I forgot to mention, the radio was loud, the windows up, but I _did_ hear the impact. Had he not been wearing his helmet, his head would have been crushed undoubtedly. Is often caused by a mental condition known as Depression, which means the brain's seritonin is out of wack, causing the person to constantly feel down. Very few people who are depressed actually do manage to commit suicide, most of the time it is them attempting to reach out for help, and this is the only medium they can find to do it through. Those who do usually use more drastic and deadly measures, such as a firearm, and are depressed to the point of seeing death as the only way out. Lets get Kynwal piss drunk. :P It started off innocent enough, with a beer. Then somehow I got a ScrewDriver. Then another beer. Then 3 shots of Jagermeister. A shot of tequila. A kool-aid with vodka shooter. A beam me up Scotty. Another shot of tequila and some partial shot that I have no idea what was in it. Amazingly(?) I was still very aware, and besides being even more silly then usual and those amazing slow reflexes, I didn't feel too bad. Until we got home and for some reason I had to do what probably amounted to 3 shots of Rum. Not even sure of the proof. As you can imagine that was the killing blow. It was time to renew my faith.
