The name 'Ghostwheel' was used earlier, being the name of the server Ghost was run on; however, after much trouble, we upgraded. The name 'Ghostwheel' is ALSO a very major and powerful character from the second series _Chronicles of Amber_ series, by Roger Zelazny; many people were showing up and asking about Shadows, Pattern, etc, having gotten the Wrong Idea from the name. The theme of Total MOOhem, is simple that, total mayhem, year 4020, the human race, and all species close to, have ventured to the outskirts of the galaxy and have discovered a wormhole. The other side of this wormhole is a small planet, enriched with precious minerals, as Earth and surrounding planets have been almost totally stripped, resources have become slimer every decade. Large organizations want territory on this planet, including the government. A military fortress, as well as a scientist bunker have been built. Hello out there, I'm one of the recent additions to the dark side and I just wanted to clarify a few things. First off, my character is evil and I will have her kill a player if nessessary, but on principle, I generally don't. Second, she is a character, who in no way, shape or form is like me irl, that's what this place is all about, playing someone you're wouldn't be like normally. Third, the poem at the beginning of my finger is by Charles Baudelaire, I put it up there for fun, not in seriousness, in order to set the mood for my character. I hope that if anyone has any problem with my character, that they will page or mail me. And one last time I stress that I am not like Zillah irl. Please don't take what she does ICly personally. Thanks, Zillah -------------------------- Message 28 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Dec 7 16:16:09 1995 CST From: Elendil (#2237) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: The Dark Side I've noticed a disconcerting trend lately. It seems that there are suddenly alot more people who want to roleplay psychotics and thugs. That's fine, I suppose, but at the same time it could quite easily denote the beginning of the end. I'm already sick and tired of having people posture, threaten, and attack other people in such places as the r/t, etc. Ambushes in the woods are fine, but this is starting to bug me, both @oocly and @icly. Anyone can play a nut and pick fights, but I'm going to do what I can to make sure you don't win them. I'm certainly no innocent, so here are some @ic rpgin' notes on my character that should be noticed: Race Preservation: If you attack with deadly intent a submariner, I will find you and kill you. I don't enjoy doing this, so don't make me. If you have a @ic problem with a submariner, please try to resolve it without physical conflict. Once a fight or vendetta starts, it no longers will matter to me @icly who was wronged, I will always side with the submariner (aside from the miniscule chance that it is the submariner doing the rampaging.) Neutrality. My alignment, as it were, is generally neutral. This is not, as some mistakenly belief, the designation that I don't care, it's that I probably don't care about YOU, unless we're friends. I try to be courteous and forgiving @icly, as befits various facets of my station, and if it doesn't concern me, I'll ignore it. I'm not a crusader for justice, but I detest random acts of violence, reflected in my 'LAW/BALANCE' 'finger' note. What I'm trying to get across is that playing a psychotic does not mean that you're playing a suicidal psychotic. It should not matter to your character @icly whether you're delivering pain and suffering to a wendigo or to a newbie, so if you concentrate on killing and abusing other players at random, don't be surprised a single whit when someone finds you and makes you dead. For me, it is merely good manners.' --Lawrence of Arabia -------------------------- Message 29 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Dec 7 19:22:38 1995 CST From: Zillah (#5587) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Evil characters... In response to Elendil's post, I must defend those of us who have recently popped up as bad characters. Elendil, I don't think you understand my intentions as a player by creating Zillah. I simply want a hand in creating conflict, the spice of life and role-playing. My character may be psychotic in the end, but she has yet to kill anyone, nor has she tried anything else beyond using her mage abilities, for which I got permission from the player ahead of time. I am not here to terrorize newbies or kill and abuse other players without their full consent. I find it insulting that you are generalizing that to all evil characters here. I am here to role-play, not to be abusive. Conflict is essential to any storyline. Think of it this way, if everything is happy and all is well in the plot of a book, who is going to buy it? Not many, without conflict, the idea is flat. Just my two, maybe three, cents worth. Zillah -------------------------- Message 30 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Thu Dec 7 20:31:18 1995 CST From: Elendil (#2237) To: *Chat (#5391) Hrm. Perhaps I wasn't clear. What I am complaining about is the tendency for evil pcs to confuse mass slaughter with role playing an evil character. I'm not generalizing; I've done this myself. So far the primarily 'evil' pcs have been run as Features and NPCs and I hope it stays that way. If you can, however, play a calculating, vicious evil character smoothly and intelligently, all the better. I've recently been having to deal with this and was wondering if there were others on the MOO or if I just have a black mark on me. While out on the plains, or even just in the R/T lounge, I've run into PC's who look at me, then start swinging for no apparent reason, at least not to me. My character's first reaction is to attack, of course, that's in her predatory nature. Kill or be killed, but what disturbs me is the lack of rping that takes place. I'm not out to kill players, but when my character is out on the plains hunting and someone walks out, takes one look at her and then starts to swing at her (thank goodness for a good dodge) without so much as a word said or even an emote, I gotta wonder about the player's motives for being on GW. That is annoying as far as I'm concerned. This has happened to me twice as this character so far. While I'm at it, I have caught players using the 'home' command to get out of an IC situation. This goes above and beyond annoying, it's cheating. And by abusing the 'home' command, (You know who you are too) you're ruining it for the rest of us who might need it in an emergency sometime. (Late for class and have to home really quick.) Anyway, back to the original subject (I know, I'm babbling, my apologies), my character is built to be an antagonist, so if she is attacked, that's fine, I'm prepared for that. All I'm asking is for a little rp to go with it. Hack and slash is for the MUD's, leave it there. (No insult intended to any MUDers out there.) Ok, I'll get off my soap box now. I'm curious to know if anyone has experienced similiar conflicts. And as always, flames to me, not *chat. Maybe I'm just venting, but this is how I feel and I think this needs to be said. I play a character who has evil tendancies (Though she doesn't see them as evil). It seems that every time I interact with people who are of the 'light side' if things don't go their way, I get bombarded with pages (Which are OOC and I do take them personally then) saying everything from 'I'm going to sick my friends on you' to 'You bitch!'. Now, my character is a living, breathing creature of the ghostwheel realm. She is _NOT_ an AHaB, nor is she there for you to just beat up on and kill for the perverse pleasure of saving the day. IRL, you don't always win and good doesn't always prevail, only in fairy tales is life like that. My character has her own motives and goals and will try to carry them out. I do _NOT_ Player kill unless the scene in which I am in calls for it. If things aren't going your way when you interact with her, then leave the area. Or page me OOCly and tell me what's wrong exactly or that you don't want to go on with the plot. I'll certainly respect your wishes. I'm not like Sol irl by any means. Ok, nuff said. Someone took 2000 crystals out of my room in the past day or so. I can't really think of anywhere else to send this, so I sent it here. Perhaps crystals disappear when not 'used'...that wouldn't surprise me. However, since whenever I try to use the crystals I've built up I get glowered at, and then the items I buy float away. Nice little catch-22, but kinda poor, I think. It may be all well and good to @icly say crystals degrade, but then you'd think that someone would have gotten around to creating a currency (read: available, no gold coins) that doesn't automatically lose value over time. Perhaps you could argue that items themselves form a crude currency here on GW, but since they too 'degrade' after a fashion I don't buy that. Since my crystals disappeared from a @locked satchel behind two locked doors at the bottom of the ocean I think we can likewise rule out criminal mischief. Now I work hard for my resources, and I have alot of @ic expenses with the submariners that I receive no additional support for dealing with. Those of us who follow the rules are constantly being abused like this, and we're getting tired of it, but we are not allowed to take matters into our own hands. Then we get in trouble. All right then, if we can't be allowed to take action, then who is? I hear a lot of grumbling, but nothing being done. Let's take some kind of action people, anything. As a psychology major, this kind of slap on the wrist, or intermittant punishment will do nothing more than encourage the person cheating, ect, to continue doing it because he/she knows, ah, I'll just get slapped on the wrist and I can do it again the next day, no big deal. What I meant was this: I am sick of watching rule breakers like DryWater and Darkhawk continue to cheat, bend rules, and ignore the rights of players here and get away with it constantly. Because of people like them, rules have gotten tighter and tighter. And why are they getting tighter? What does it matter? NO ONE IS ENFORCING THEM. The rules that are being tightened are only punishing those who rp fairly. With a definite lack of enforcement, they are not affecting those that they are targeting (Darkhawk, DryWater, etc.) in the manner intended but are instead creating a strangle hold on the activities of those who play fairly. Perhaps if an enforcement board of pcs & wizzen were created (an ooc board, that is) the rules would have more effect--as it is, they (the new, stricter regulations) are merely an annoyance. Tadewi and Yroshi have voiced the sort of frustration everyone feels when a player/s behave irresponsibly. Anyone can make the mistake of thinking that because something's -possible- to do, it's acceptable. Where a player does such things habitually, it's annoying; when it gets in the way of a plot's unfolding, though.. where it actually -halts- the process, I think it's important that a record be made of it. If everyone involved would @send to a wizard a brief summary of the abuse which occurred, it could be followed up upon.. and a GM-snitch note placed on that character's sheet. That way, 'cumulative' offenders could be officially identified. It's very difficult to enforce rules where the policy of the MOO is not to @newt or @toad players. Does anyone really want that? And do we really want RP police here? An OOC panel to rule on such things would have to be very carefully chosen.. or that's what we'd wind up with, that and possibly a great deal of petty politics. If one is created, I'd suggest that its members be elected by the PC and not appointed. -------------------------- Message 86 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 9 20:07:19 1996 CDT From: Yroshi (#6068) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: More thoughts from a deranged mind. I do like the idea of a ooc panel. Lamia is correct in it would have to be very carefully done. Much abuse could result in it. I for one would not be good on such a panel as I'm a 'off with there heads' sortof guy. But I think there are enough level headed people out there that would not abuse being on the panel. Done correctly..this could work. In responce to Lamia's saying send a brief note to a wiz. I believe that is done rather often already. I really think about 80% gets reported. Whether that is then put on a persons sheet I cant tell. I do know that at least from my end (bieng a PC) It looks like nothing is done about it. I could be wrong as I dont know what evil, nasty, horrable things might be planned or even carried out without my knowladge. If, as Skywalker's example points out, you left your 'wallet' at home, I think it's fine to @summon it. Granted one cannot do that IRL.. neither can we @who IRL.. but realism is not the focus of why we're all here to begin with:) It's fine to do it where it does not create an unfair advantage for you, or disadvantage to another (i.e., moving your backpack to yourself after it's been taken from you). Common sense should tell you that if your quarterstaff is inside a ROUS, @summoning it would disadvantage the ROUS.. if it's in another player's inventory, though, that's another matter entirely and negotiating ICly for its return is preferable -- and yes, you can have IC knowledge of its whereabouts if you know you died to that person:) Using @move me or @go to a tent that you've stragically placed in the Wastes, though, when you are being pursued doesn't seem to make much sense ICly. Those that do so should probably think about it. Can you 'teleport' for an IC reason? I kinda doubt it. In Darkhawk's defense, I'd like to say that I believe he is trying to RP well, trying to learn. When Balth imprisoned him for Naxos's murder, he @sethome there so that the plot could continue. When he 'awoke' at Coral Reef and drowned, he did not whine about it and paged to ask if it was okay to @sethome elsewhere again, to ask if that was the end of the plot. Respectfully suggesting to another that they've made a poor choice ICly can be a lot more productive than ranting at them. If your suggestion is ridiculed, mail a wiz with the particulars. -------------------------- Message 88 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Tue Apr 9 20:33:16 1996 CDT From: Yroshi (#6068) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Might as well add to the spam While I'm at it..I aggree with Lamia on the @move, @go thing as well. I personaly do not see a problem with it as long as it does not interfere with other players in anyway. If your in a crowd of people..and you home becuase you dont feel like walking. I think thats wrong. Step into the next empty room and do it. Most of us do not enjoy haveing to walk a long distance to get home..especially if we are somewhat rushed and the lag is bad. But at least do it where no one sees you. As long as your @go, home and @move do not affect anyone besides yourself in anyway..its ok in book. If my character goes "Hey..how did he just *poof* away like that...he is not a mage?" Then thats cheating. Or if I wake up in my cave wich very few people can get to and all my stuff is gone..Thats wrong. If you have a note or something wich you forgot at your home and you want to @move it to you..sure..why not..as long as no one else sees you do this amazing trick in a IC scene. If Darkhawk is trying, great, I'm glad. But you'll have to pardon me for being leery of him. Sort of the boy who cried wolf too many times idea. The same for others here. I'm extremely active here with my characters and I see things all the time, and yes, I report them when they occur. So, I assumed that nothing was being done about it. From a PC standpoint, that is frustrating. If there was some way of giving feedback or letting the players know that, yes, we know this is going on and we're working on it, would be nice. As for the PC elected rule board (I think that was the idea), I like it and I think that'd be a good idea, with one idea added, let the PC's vote to remove someone from the board if they feel the person has gone power mad or is abusing their position. If there are punishments being handed out, regardless of strength or weakness, they need to be publicized, or at least listed as possibilities and followed through upon: otherwise the appearance of weakness and refusal to punish the wrong-doers of the world is given out to the people inhabiting it. This leads to a great deal of player dissatisfaction and discontent, leading from the idea of : he's breaking the rules, he's not getting punished for it, That's not Fair! In other words: if you don't show us that rules are being inforced, it equals the same as rules -not- being inforced in the general opinion of the populace. No, I do not desire people to be @toaded. But, perhaps, being moved to HELL for a while, or being @chparented to a restricted player class, as Deckard suggests, or any of the other possiblities mentioned previously on this list, would help greatly with this problem. just another 2 cents worth (I've got a sack full) -KARA- -------------------------- Message 93 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 00:15:27 1996 CDT From: Darkhawk (#5041) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Recent hatred towards me Ok I've done some bad rule breaking things in the past, but thats why its called the past! When did i do that going OOC to avoid conflict, last year!, would you all please just get over what happened in the past, first of all i think this moo should be about fun, if they dont want us killing things or @moving things then what use is it to have those commands?? if everyone is whining about the @move why dont they just disable that for players? as for killing others that can only be solved through the player changing, and would you all please stop refering to me as a rule breaker, I have not broken a rule in a long time, and if you want to call blocking an exit breaking the rules then i need a copy of these rules. -Darkhawk (the one who everybody loves to hate) -------------------------- Message 94 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 02:35:46 1996 CDT From: Lamia (#3623) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: #93 Commands like @summon, @go, 'home', 'start', etc. are important because they give us some control over our own environment. There's an implicit trust that $players will not use these commands to gain an unfair IC advantage. Disabling them isn't necessarily the fair solution, because it punishes everyone -- including the majority of the PC, who use them responsibly. @Summoning an item you own, without even @auditing yourself first to see its location is clearly an irresponsible use of the command. And moving it from another player's possession is, frankly, cheating. So, in my opinion, is having a collection of tents in your inventory and placing them strategically in different locations for the purpose of that quick IC escape. You cannot travel ICly from GW Plain to your tent in the Wastes by using '@move me to . You could, though, 'home' to one there -- as long as your purpose was to go home and not evade IC pursuit. So, yes, using these commands requires some thought.. and if you find yourself needing to *ask* if using one's a cheat, rest assured that it probably is. -------------------------- Message 95 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 12:43:54 1996 CDT From: Nebula (#1730) To: *Chat (#5391) If you find IC that players are being nasty IC, there's nothing preventing any group of PCs from forming IC hunting parties. We do have coded, and other combat gear. Imagination is not codable. -------------------------- Message 96 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 12:47:51 1996 CDT From: Naxos (#9972) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: my time for a little spam ;) After doing a little inquiring OOC, I found the reason for my death was, hey lets go kill someone. As well when I check my scrollback, I didn't see Darkhawk take a swing, but he did block the exit.... In this case I'd Drywater is at fault, so Darkhawk isn't as much to blame as DH. On to a nother disregard of rules, last not Havoc attacked and killed Mutanebbi, don't know the whole story, but id had to do with Muta sing poetry? come on seems a little silly. And Havoc may have also launched a grenade into the lounge as well, Karcass said he saw him, but I missed him. Now my opinion? well I like the OOC panel, don't like @toading. As for Skywalkers crystals, I say leave the room, port it to yourself, and then go back. That makes it 'seem' real. that's about it good to hear discussion about this, I've just struck personally ;) --Naxos, Warden? not much of a guard if you ask me ;) -------------------------- Message 97 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 13:00:28 1996 CDT From: Tadewi (#3791) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: RP it. Neb's got a point, and I have to agree with her on it. If another player abuses what we have all been trusted with, 'home' '@edit' '@send' etc, then just make an IC reason for it. Report it to a wiz quietly and go on. Show the rule breaker that you're the better person because you rp out the situation. If someone goes into the note editor to escape death or theft of items, then just claim that the at the last second, an evil mage spirited him/her away. Get your 'clan' 'group' or whatever together and hunt him/her down eventually to extract revenge. They can run for a long time, but eventually, they'll get caught and have to take it just as they give it. But seriously..use discretion when forming these mobs and revenge parties. Like reading poetry is not a good reason to go hunt after someone. Less it really sucks..:) Yr -------------------------- Message 99 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 13:19:22 1996 CDT From: Kara (#3779) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: eek! Pleeeezzee...not lynching parties! (Whatever will I wear?) Seriously, though--this seems like a device that has as much potential for being misused as the characteristic "plagues and kidnappings, inc." I like lynch mobs and all..they're a workable concept...but that still doesn't erase the need for an actual, ooc function of some sort to enforce rules on the moo in a visible fashion. Remember, rules not -visibly- enforced = no rules at all, as far as the majority of pcs go. --Kara-- -------------------------- Message 100 from *Chat (#5391): Date: Wed Apr 10 13:42:42 1996 CDT From: Drago (#2307) To: *Chat (#5391) Subject: Go, Nebula Just as I was about to tear my hair out, a voice of sanity. RP it, yeah! Good idea that! Lynching parties? Naaah, not 'less you wanna, and it is still a MOO isn't it? OOC bolting to Mail Rooms during a fight is boring, but god, running to wizzen every time someone does something you wonder about is way boring. And anyway, just what does someone do if a person is reading, reciting, creating poetry, init. mouth-putting-socks-in? C'mon imaagination cannot be coded. Let's see if we can work around it. -Phili[p]stine. --------------------------
